Fab Five Movie Open Thread
Seems like an odd time to talk about the past when there's finally so much in the present to talk about, but we're under an hour away from the movie premiere on ESPN. If anyone has any thoughts on their Fab Five experience, to get us warmed up for the movie, let's hear them. And then we can pop the popcorn, and cozy up for the broadcast, which should be interesting, if nothing else. Like I said somewhere else here, it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.... And it's time to relive them, or experience them for the first time.

I hope they are jacked up for Tennessee!
March 13th, 2011 at 11:00 PM ^
All those pictures; just couldn't keep this out of my head.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:00 PM ^
Any way they'll ever be allowed to put the banners back up?
March 13th, 2011 at 11:02 PM ^
As far as I know, the NCAA didn't even require us to do it. It was self-sanctioned. So as far as I know, if Webber ever comes clean they could easily do a "Re-Raise the Banner" ceremony, which would be awesome.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:54 PM ^
The NCAA definitely sanctioned us. They brought the hammer. But they essentially agreed with our self-sanctions, just adding another year of probation and taking away another scholarship. They NCAA considers those wins forfeit. I don't think the University can suddenly change it's mind 10 years later.

Solid film, excellent if you're a Michigan fan, but it's not one of their best, simply because Chris Webber didn't take part. Otherwise, it was great.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:21 PM ^
Chris Webber needs to grow up and say I'm sorry.

Neg me if you want, I don't fault any 18-19 year old kid taking money because it's offered. But it doesn't mean he did the right thing. Now he needs to be a man and apologize for all the turmoil and pain his actions caused the university, players, and fans who did and still love him.

That was better than I thought it could be. My wife, who didn't go to Michigan, was equally riveted.
This may be the best documentary ESPN has ever done.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:01 PM ^
Just want to say thank you to Jalen mostly. You are the man. RayRay and King and Howard, thank you for what you did for the uni. CWebb, we love you and want you coming home too. 2013 will be a good year for UM basketball for the Fab Five and for the new youngsters!
March 13th, 2011 at 11:02 PM ^
Ray runs a non profit for youths. Jimmy owns a solar energy company and coaches kids. Jalen opens a Charter School for Leadership. Not too shabby.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:03 PM ^
Jimmy was an analyst for Merril Lynch on Wall Street also.

Impessive....most impressive. Business/Economics is my thing. I really wish I could get an MBA from Ross, but that is likely not going to happen.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:57 PM ^
I can't believe that "Mike Talley" is currently Trending on Twitter right now. I bet he never thought he'd be that popular.
March 14th, 2011 at 10:34 AM ^
Fuck Mike.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:02 PM ^
This was incredibly well done. Like, holy shit.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:03 PM ^
Talking Michigan Tournament.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:03 PM ^
Great production. Great story. This was a very frank and powerful doc, and at the same time wasn't one of those knock-you-over-the-head emotional rides that some of them default to.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:03 PM ^
Can't wait to download it and watch it with my son (whose now in school here in Korea on Monday morning). BTT torrent anyone?
March 13th, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
I'm absolutely speechless. I think I finally have a favorite movie.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:07 PM ^
That was just an incredible film. Completely blown away.

"#FabFive classic!! Just got off the phone with J Howard and thanked him for showing all of us what we all loved! Amazing documentary."
March 13th, 2011 at 11:06 PM ^
It's re-airing on ESPN2 right now if you couldn't get enough of it the first time.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:06 PM ^
Anyone know the name of the song and artist at the end?
March 13th, 2011 at 11:12 PM ^
Song - Quiet
Artist - This Will Destroy You
March 13th, 2011 at 11:20 PM ^
Sounded very Explosions in the Sky-esque. Sure enough, This Will Destroy You is a group that uses long instrumentals and is from Texas.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:29 PM ^
"Young Mountain" is a great album if anyone is interested in them
March 13th, 2011 at 11:07 PM ^
That. Was. Awesome. The good, the bad and the ugly. The truth. The pain. The excitement. It's everything I felt watching the championship game as a sophomore at UM with my own college "brothers" and it still feels that way today. Well done.

I cannot believe MSC got on national TV and said the Unveristy didn't know what was going on!!! Yes you did! Who put the pictures of Martin up in the locker room then? I always thought MSC was clueless... tonite, she opened her mouth and proved it to the world.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:11 PM ^
Whatever missteps MSC made with Michigan athletics over the years, she is currently on the Johnson & Johnson board of directors. She must know a thing or two about how power works in a large organization.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:10 PM ^
wow, anybody that doesn't think the Fab 5 was a big deal, check out the twitter trends right now.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:16 PM ^
ESPN couldn't do us any more of a favor to promote it, and Michigan.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:39 PM ^
John Beilein.
Helps put an end to this bullshit idea that Beilein and Michigan just aren't cool enough to recruit well.
It's got to help recruiting . . . reminding recruits that yes, Michigan was and is a cool place to go.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:12 PM ^
How can we get the current team to shave their heads for the NCAA tournament? Morris, Morgan and Hardaway would look pretty badass. Plus, Novak, Smotrycz and Vogrich look absurd with their present do's. Might as well get some black socks and sneaks too
March 13th, 2011 at 11:16 PM ^
Still tough to beat Scotty Hopson's flat-top fade.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:12 PM ^
I can't wait until they put the banners up again in 2013.
Come Brandon, do the right thing!
March 13th, 2011 at 11:21 PM ^
apologize is reasonable. Brandon made it clear that's what they're waiting on. Admitting the mistake is a precursor to moving on, and it looks like the school is ready to do that

but i recall this coming out that they were asking for 695k in restitution.
a) whatever happened of that?
b) the graph of merchandising profits show how ridiculous this is in the early 90s
c) was this only from him not taylor/traylor/bullock sinc e he lied/distanced himself?
Desiring him to fess up is completely legit, but this just seems over the top.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:39 PM ^
The banners aren't leaving the Bentley. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Please go away. Forever.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:14 PM ^
That was fucking awesome.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:15 PM ^
So glad I DVR'd that.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:15 PM ^
"Like watching my college years on television". It WAS eerie.

But more than us who can remember it, I'm glad for current and recent students. Not just to be exposed to history, but know that just making the Tournament every couple of years, maybe the occasional Big Ten title, just "not sucking", is not what it's all about, is why Crisler isn't filled, and isn't what Michigan is limited to. Getting to the Tournament for the 2nd time in 3 years, even if it's a short trip is getting back on the road to that. That's why it's more important than a long run in the NIT. We were great once; we can be again. And hopefully we're well on our way.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
Yeah, as a recent grad, I think I only knew a fraction of the story. And we're talking like 1/10 of it. This is a must-watch for anyone that was too young then and should also be a must-watch for any new students. Crisler has to go back to what it was.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:17 PM ^
How cool would it be if this years team made a deep run, BEAT Duke, and after the players say something along the lines of "That was for the Fab 5"!!!
March 13th, 2011 at 11:39 PM ^
word that. I'll say it for them: "This was for the Fab Five, you soft, weak, uncle tom, overrated bitches." ... I did get that part of the firm right, right?
Don't forget to tell the Blue Devils to GTFOMC!
March 13th, 2011 at 11:17 PM ^
Excellent....better than expected in every way. I was worried the NC game timeout thing would be reliving a nightmare but they handled it well...
March 13th, 2011 at 11:20 PM ^
Anyone know if this will be available to watch online? It seems the 30 for 30 shows are stuck in the stoneage while most other ESPN content is available on ESPN3/ESPN.com.
March 13th, 2011 at 11:43 PM ^
Because they're selling the downloads on Amazon and ITunes.
