F for Gerg...

This defense is atrocious. It is one thing if you are facing something you have never seen, but Umass is running basic stuff. You should be able to stop simple running plays even if you are young. That isn't a unrealistic expectation.

No, lets not over-rationalize it. It was a pathetic display by our defense. However, we are 3-0 with two of those wins over BCS teams. Our defense was not supposed to be good this year anyway, this is what an off-day for a bad defense looks like. Get over it. Enjoy 3-0 and lets see what happens next week.

Everyone who panics over this fails to remember that expectations for this defense were not high to begin with. It was a bad day. Even Michigan can have those.

Special teams is the big problem.  We gave them so many chances to stay in the game based on just awful special teams play.

The defense is just young, and the players were a little unfocused in the first half.  The special teams turnovers, and almost-turnovers, and general mishaps, and another missed field goal, are all what's really inexcusable here.

I love how everyone is now a defensive coordinator or head coach. Lol. Good lord get a grip. doesn't change any expectations for me. We still go 8-4 or better. You people are a bunch of nancies.

Come on now people, you act as if we had a top notch defense to begin with and he just made it terrible. We knew what it was when the season started and just because you raised your expectations because of the first two games didn't mean the defense was magically gonna be better than we expected. You can only do what your personnel allows you to do, no matter who you are playing.

On one hand, don't fire GERG.  That would make a bad situation worse.  On the other hand, and we have to look at the other hand, the arguments of "our youth" and "their good execution" can't explain away what appeared like

1) an underprepared defensive

2) a poorly executing defense

3) an inability to adapt or counter their offense.

Though I look forward to an UFR and comments from people better at the X's and O's and schemes and stuff, should it be called for, I am charging for my torch and pitchfork.  GERG doesn't owe me some explaining, but this defensive effort DOES NOT sit well with simple concepts of our youth or their execution alone.

Our defense is porous, sure.  It's difficult to watch and we're gonna have a lot of points scored on us this year.

But we have, in my opinion, the most explosive offense in the Big Ten.  We'll be able to hang.  We'll lose some, but we'll definitely win some.  I still believe in 8-4.

I'll admit that GERG has a good reputation as a DC, and that he's doing the best he can with what he's got, but I still would like to see him interviewed and explain what his game plan was today.  Like maybe he didn't want to give up the bomb - which the D didn't. But man, those U Mass receivers were wide open in the end zone.
