Eyes on the UM Alum in the NFL

Submitted by Buzz Your Girlfriend on

To preface this conversation, I just spent the last two hours watching NFL highlight youtube videos of Woodson, Brady, Henne, and Braylon Edwards. Good times.

NFL pre-season starts tonight (I know, who cares), but what I always keep an eye on is how former Michigan players are doing and root for them no matter the team.

With that being said, which former players are you most looking forward to watching this year? Feel free to add in your own superlatives like breakout performer or best performer.

Here's the list:

Jamar Adams Seattle Seahawks Safety
Adrian Arrington New Orleans Saints Wide Receiver
Jason Avant Philadelphia Eagles Wide Receiver
David Baas San Francisco 49ers Guard
Jeff Backus Detroit Lions Offensive Tackle
Tom Brady New England Patriots Quarterback
Alan Branch Arizona Cardinals Defensive Tackle
Steve Breaston Arizona Cardinals Wide Receiver
Stevie Brown Oakland Raiders Safety
Prescott Burgess Baltimore Ravens Linebacker
Carson Butler New England Patriots Tight End
Shawn Crable New England Patriots Linebacker
Doug Dutch Baltimore Ravens Cornerback
Braylon Edwards New York Jets Wide Receiver
Jay Feely Arizona Cardinals Place kicker
Larry Foote Pittsburgh Steelers Linebacker
Jonathan Goodwin New Orleans Saints Center
Brandon Graham Philadelphia Eagles Defensive End
James Hall St. Louis Rams Defensive End
Leon Hall Cincinnati Bengals Cornerback
David Harris New York Jets Linebacker
Mike Hart Indianapolis Colts Running Back
Chad Henne Miami Dolphins Quarterback
Steve Hutchinson Minnesota Vikings Guard
Marlin Jackson Philadelphia Eagles Safety
Tim Jamison Houston Texans Defensive End
Jon Jansen Detroit Lions Offensive Tackle
Dhani Jones Cincinnati Bengals Linebacker
Jake Long Miami Dolphins Offensive Tackle
Mario Manningham New York Giants Wide Receiver
Greg Mathews Chicago Bears Wide Receiver
Zoltan Mesko New England Patriots Punter
Brandon Minor Chicago Bears Running Back
David Moosman Arizona Cardinals Center
Rueben Riley New York Giants Guard
Adam Stenavich Houston Texans Guard
Terrance Taylor Detroit Lions Defensive Tackle
Morgan Trent Cincinnati Bengals Cornerback
Donovan Warren New York Jets Safety
Gabe Watson Arizona Cardinals Defensive Tackle
LaMarr Woodley Pittsburgh Steelers Linebacker
Pierre Woods New England Patriots Linebacker
Charles Woodson Green Bay Packers Cornerback

Most looking forward to watching on Sundays: David Harris. Straight beast. Period.

Breakout performer: If Philly didn't drop McNabb, I would say Jason Avant. Outstanding hands, ridiculous catches, and one of my favorite M players to date. I'll say Edwards and his beard becomes one of the best in the NFL this year.

Best performer:  Easy pick would be Brady or Woodson, but I'll shake it up a bit and go with Chad Henne. He really shined through on occasions last year and I think he will take it up another notch this year. It's going to be fun watching Pats v Dolphins x2 this year.

how Henne performs with a decent WR in Brandon Marshall. With Jake Long protecting him and a decent run game with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams helping him out I don't see why he doesn't have a real solid season.

That's a really thorough list.  AFAIK, Adam Stenavich has never played a down in the NFL.  It looks like he has bounced around practice squads and Europe for a few years.  (Good for him.)  Same idea with Terrance Taylor...

First of all, the man

Second of all, he is finally starting... i just wish he would return kicks/punts still. He is always fun to watch.

My second choise would be- Zoltan Mesko

I mean he isn't going to punt a lot because he has Brady, but when he does....

its Wolverines.  There are five on their roster.  My pick for player to provide an unexpected impact, I offer Shawn Crable.  New England needs linebackers.  Belichick know defensive talent.  Crable has always had the physical tools.  This is the year.

Rooting for them to make the team, and possibly only chance to see those who won't... Yes, I remember watching that Pats late-round QB pick from Michigan throw probably the only two or three passes he'd ever throw on TV, since that Drew Bledsoe guy certainly wasn't going to step aside to let him play...  Feel pretty much the same about once-under-the-radar David Harris, but I'll get plenty of opportunities to see him play (along with Braylon) being in NYC.

Okay, enough I-was-there-when stuff.  So obviously I'm looking forward to seeing Graham and Mesko play in preseason.  Hope I get to see Donovan Warren, but I haven't heard much about him since Jets camp started.  (The only DB they're talking about is the one who isn't there.)  Same is true of Minor, except that the Bears using a supplemental draft pick on a runner may not be a good sign for him.  But Greg Mathews has been reported as making some good catches in Bears camp.  I'm rooting for Rueben Riley, who's been moving around the NFL camps and practice squads and was picked up by the Giants last winter.  They've had some injuries (and age) in their O-line, so hope he can work his way in.  Marlin Jackson was put on IR almost as soon as he got into Philly, Shawn Crable was already cut after spending most of his time with the Pats on the IR, but Mike Hart is apparently healthy again, so naturally hope to see him get some time.  Was rooting for Adrian Arrington and Prescott Burgess, but they may be too far down in the depth chart and apparently Adrian has had injury problems...  Hope Breaston's groin pull doesn't hold him back, and heard Mario had a similar tweak.

Okay, so I want to watch everybody.  I'm a sucker for M alumni-- the only reason I started watching the NFL.  Hoping to watch everybody on your list who's not injured or gone (and rooting for them to make it back.)

Tonight for the Maize & Blue: Bengals 3,  Cowboys 0.

That's so true.  For the most part, I only watch the NFL to see former wolverines in the NFL.  I especially enjoy watching the Dolphins, Jets, Cardinals.  David Harris is a beast.  Can't wait to see BG turn some heads and I loves me some Woodley too.

That's a really long, wonderful list, but the fact is that at this point in the year NFL rosters are also REALLY long -- I count 79 on the Bears'.  There will be a lot of cutdowns to get to 53 man rosters and we can expect to read nfl "obituaries" on a regular basis in the next five weeks, many of whom will be Wolverines.  Sorry folks.

Case in point, Minor.  Minor is competing for a job behind Matt Forte, Chester Taylor, Kahlil Bell and Garrett Wolfe.  Getting past Wolfe and even Bell is plausible, but the 53-man roster won't carry more than three, so he's right on the bubble.  Matthews (can you tell I'm a Bears fan?) is in an even worse situation, competing with 8 others.

Still, I too will watch the exhibition games just to see these guys take a few snaps and maybe even get a couple of touches.

... the bears carried 4 back last season, and mike martz likes big powerful runners. That gives minor a slight edge over wolf, and harvey unga was banged up. It is very possible for minor to make the 53, and if he dosent I see him on the practice squad until someone gets hurt like last year.

I was talking to an Eagles fan who is very excited to see BG perform this season. I also got to see Manningham snag some nice catches when I went to the Giants training camp yesterday morning.
