Exit Jerald Robinson

Jerald Robison has left the program, according to Chris Balas.  I guess the writing was on the wall with respect to his playing time.  Disappointing that he never lived up to the hype.  Best of luck to him.

No disrespect intended to JR, but the coaches could elevate a walk-on to the 2-deep who could just as likely produce 5 catches, and in reality we will have Darboh and Chesson, plus at least 3 (?) true freshman next season.

I say it hurts depth becuase next year the players who have actually played extensive time at WR are only Dileo, Gallon and Jackson.

It could mean nothing to our depth if Chesson, Darboh and the true freshman prove that they are better and more capable.

Don't forget Joe Reynolds. At the end of the season, he was getting reps ahead of Robinson, and is about his same size. Chances are, if Jerald Robinson stayed, he'd be behind Reynolds on the depth chart. So this has little effect of depth, really. Probably why he left.

But we won't need them this fall, at least not much. We lose Gardner and Roundtree from the receiving corps, and they'll be replaced by Chesson and Darboh. The TE will be emphasized more, because we'll have TEs who aren't either walk ons or true frosh, and guys like Gallon and Dileo will get more touches.

And I guess we'll still have Jeremy Jackson out there to watch the ball sail over his head on a deep route.

Honestly...once Reynolds passed him up late in the season I think the writing was on the wall.

I do wonder where the disconnect was as a lot of teammates thought he would be the guy to step up. Maybe the route reads from the WR position weren't his cup of tea and maybe a more spread oriented passing game is what he needs.

Either way best of luck to the kid, he gave it 2 full yrs instead of quitting on the spot. Shows a lot of maturity on his part to put the work in like he did.

Hope he does well whereever he ends up.

from the class wouldn't shock me given the depth chart has many of them buried. Especially with Sam Webb noting 7 spots left.

Hope they they stay and become Champions ...

To be honest, this class was not very talented to begin with, so while it hurts short term depth in terms of number of bodies, I think having open spots for the staff to fill with recruits is a good thing.

It is a shame that things did not seem to pan out. Coming into the team, I believe he was, at that time, a top fifty WR nationally and one of the top players coming out of Ohio according to most services. He started to see some time here and there this year, but not much, and as others have mentioned, with Darboh and Chesson and Reynolds seemingly on the rise, his place as the third or fourth receiver down on most depth charts (as he was this year) might have been the norm. I wish him well wherever he decides to go.

I wonder if this increases the odds that Jourdan Lewis ends up at WR instead of CB.  Seems he could play either.  If Countess is healthy (please, please, please), then the need seems greater at WR.

Finding a stud CB is typically harder than a stud WR, but it may make sense for us next year.

This is yet more evidence that Rodriguez couldn't cut it as a recruiter of Michigan-caliber players.

If you look back at Robinson in high school, he lacked speed and really wasn't very good at going up to get the ball and catching with his hands.  The passes he caught in games and spring games generally seemed to be passes thrown right into his body, and his drops generally seemed to be passes that were thrown outside the frame of his body.

I never really understood why exiting players suggested that he would be a breakout player.  Obviously something got lost in translation, but he never seemed like a kid who had the potential to be a star.

Great evaluation. I completely agree. He is one of those players who just couldn't set himself apart. You were hoping that he would be a great possession receiver, but he couldn't make the catches when they were there. That was his shot, and that was why he got buried on the depth chart. Jeremy Jackson is another great example. Both lack elite athleticism. Jackson can't seem to pull in any of the tough ones either and he runs horrible routes to begin with. Darboh seems to be a playmaker and Chesson will be Breaston 2.0. We just need the incoming freshmen wr's to compete like the defense does for a starting spot. If that competitiveness can translate to offense we could have a damn good season next year.
