Exit Interview: Roy Roundtree

Rothstein did a good interview with 'Tree over at WN (LINK, $). It's worth the read; I know I always appreciate hearing the players' views on the program and their perspective on the things we watch and discuss. I know I had big expectations for him coming off his sophomore season, and he didn't exactly live up to them, but he was always a hard worker and his final numbers are nothing to shake a stick at:

Roundtree's flip ended up a major benefit for Michigan. The No. 104 receiver in the Class of 2008, Roundtree ended up as the only receiver in Michigan history to have 200 yards in one game (246 against Illinois in 2010). He finished his career sixth in catches (154), sixth in yards (2,304) and tied for 11th in touchdowns (15).

And, uh, is this a typo?

That game really showed I really wanted to bounce back, because the year before I was the slow receiver who got humped down by a guy. I set my mind to it that I would never get humped again. That was my goal.

Good luck 'Tree, wherever you go!

Is it too much to say that in

Is it too much to say that in retrospect that yard changed the course of rr's tenure forever? Actually yes it almost certainly is, but, what is sports commentary for if by building sweeping narratives with little evidence?

That's Bacon's opinion.

When I saw him give one of his talks for 3&O, he said RR had a number of turning points, with that being the biggest, IIRC.

Roundtree deserves a lot of praise

He is a class act who worked hard to boost his academic skills and never put himself ahead of the team.

Even when a big season was followed by marginal touches, he stayed positive. Glad the snake oil flipped him!

Pretty cool

Roundtree can tell his grandkids someday that he had more receiving yards in a game than Braylon Edwards or Anthony Carter ever did

speaking of records, on

speaking of records, on Michigan's wikipedia records page, someone needs to update Gardner with the most passing TD's in a game (5 vs iowa in 2012? perhaps it was 4, but that at least ties him with the most)

Might have been for the best...

...but surprised Rothstein didn't ask about RR vs. Hoke.

Excellent

I'm glad that Rothstein had the class to avoid the tired, stale, RR vs Hoke question.  Rothstein doesn't need to try and trip up college athletes with potentially inflammatory questions to write a very good story.

Except for defensive players

Except for defensive players who have talked about how the defensive coaching under Mattison was in a different universe from what they had experienced RR, none of the players who played under both RR and Hoke have really criticized either coach.

I still speak 20th century English where a highly probable increase in humping is the reason to start playing football in the first place...

Push out of bounds is not that bad

I guess that is why he did not complain too much about getting pushed out of bounds in the Alabama game.  I guess he thought it could have been worse.

I wonder if this is a transcription error. In the past, Tree used the word "hawked" when referring to the same incident.

That's what I thought at first, since 'h' and 'j' are right next to each other on the keyboard, but then he did it twice...which made me think it wasn't a typo.

I'm going with hawked

I have heard lots of football players refer to "hawking a guy from the back" or getting hawked from behind.

So there is that.

NOt taking anything away from

NOt taking anything away from Tree, but the fact that he set the records fr yards in one game by a reciever in Michigan history speaks volumes about how great that offense was. God damn dammity damn damn GERG. Think of if we had kept Shafer and let him hire his own staff? Oh, I hate my brain.
