The way they describe him and list his stats you could take him as a backup QB. But at 6-4, 239 lbs you could use him on the goal line and 3rd and 1 like Oklahoma uses Blake Bell (the Bell-dozer).

At least not to me. He's allowed to practice, but not participate in games, so has an effective redshirt. Maybe I missed it in the article, but it seems to me that his scholarship this year is not a given, but I'm not sure. That plus Kaleb Ringer's departure would clear one scholly. Regardless, I'll assume if this kid is interested in Michigan that he's talked to the coaches and is at least aware of the availability of a scholarship.

Mitchell is apparently a great athlete in general and could be used as a utility guy.

I just don't know why he's transferring. He's on track to graduate, so he could really want to play QB for a season before his football career is done. If that's the case, he's not coming here. From the sound of it, UAB is the best bet.

it sounds like he wants to transfer not because he wasn't starting , but he was being pushed to play a different position. I think there is some smoke here.

Even though he wouldn't start, I can definitely see him coming here just to get a guaranteed spot in grad school. He knows he's not playing in the NFL.

Obviously it had a lot to with personnel previously, but this sounds like it could be a golden opportunity to use a Fritz package for a few snaps a game and get that 7.7 yards per play that it got us before.

Didn't Borges say that not all elements of the read option was going away? Mitchell could come in with enough throwing threat to reduce injury risk to Devin. Also how Borges played Devin at WR at first last year could convince Mitchell to come here.

Dual threat QB who was pretty much told by Bielema he wasn't going to play at QB and was suspended last year at the end of the season for violation of team rules. Doesn't really seem to fit the mold for a one year transfer.

Just speculation but I wouldn't be surprised if he was throwing Michigan's name out there to help drum up interest.

You sure about that? I count 5 schools, including Michigan, as referenced in the article.

Former Arkansas quarterback Brandon Mitchell has added Michigan to his list of possible transfer choices, a source said Thursday.

The 6-foot-4, 239-pound Mitchell wants to play quarterback but if he were to go to Michigan he could be utilized as a multi-dimensional weapon because of the presence of quarterback Devin Gardner.

The schools also under consideration by Mitchell are NC State, UAB, Louisiana Tech and Northwestern State, according to a person close to the player. He plans to visit the Wolfpack this weekend, a source said.

Want more attention from the schools that you actually have the ability to transfer to? Tell everyone you're considering transferring to Michigan. We've seen plenty of guys do it before and we all know U of M has never been real big on transfers. I really wouldn't mind a backup QB who could limit the possible burning of Shane's redshirt to being a personal decision by Hoke rather than out of neccesity, but I just don't see it happening.

At this point, I have a hard time seeing M pick up a 2nd stringer.  All these guys want to transfer to a school for immediate playing time (because playing at Northwestern State for a year is a surefire way to get drafted).

I wonder if Gallon's cloaking field works as a QB (QB in HS).  Trot him out w/ DG in a split backfield set and the D is going to wonder if DG is drunk as he is lined up over the guard.

Would be nice to have a backup who isn't a freshman, since Devin hasn't shown enough to let people know if he'll be able to hold up a whole year.  But it sounds like it would be a bit of a stretch for him to get all the way up here.

I know the whole "school" thing isn't popular, but a masters  from Michigan while getting spot duty is not a bad idea at all.  He may be realistic about his NFL future and a Michigna degree is..well..a Michigan degree.  Even Jordan Kovacs was conflicted about his NFL future because he was accepted into an excellent grad program on campus, and was advised to pursue school over the NFL, because he would've made a lot more money long term staying at school.

I can't think of a better option for a transfer, assuming he wants to come here and be the clear backup to Devin:

  • He would be available this season, to replace Bellomy and save Morris' redshirt, but gone after that to free up scholarships.
  • He's large and, judging by his numbers, reasonably athletic, so he could run the same offense Devin runs.
  • He has experience playing WR, so until he's needed at QB he can help remedy our relative lack of large WRs.  Plus, as we found out last year, guys who convert from WR to QB in the middle of the season can turn out pretty damn well.

Guys at mgoblog are always talking about how wonderful a Michigan education is. And looking at the other 4 schools, Michigan is way better educationally. If I had a guaranteed admission to a grad school at Michigan, plus all costs are covered, plus I know that the NFL isn't in the cards, well, is there a better option? He comes as a backup, and knows he's a backup. He also knows he is one injury away from starting. He receives value of $60,000 plus. (admission, tuition, room, board, books, etc.) Maybe he gets to stay as a grad assistant the year after in exchange for covering some of the cost of a second year. This is a total win - win situation. Michigan gets a backup. He gets to be backup at a great school, with a real chance of some PT. Plus, he ends up with a graduate degree from Michigan. Unless he really, really wants a guaranteed starting position, I'd go for Michigan in a heartbeat.

I was at the bar in Boulder last night and a buddy of mine who plays for the Buffs said that he is fairly certain that QB Nick Hirschman will end up at Michigan. Hirschman announced that he will be transferring a couple of weeks ago. Obviously this is hearsay so take it for what it's worth, but this is coming straight from the mouth of a former teammate of Hirschman.

I'd sure love to have him as a contingency plan, and getting him in here would cover for Bellomy and likely save Shane's redshirt. But I'm hoping he never has to see the field as a starter unless he comes in and is somehow a lot better than Gardner.

But hey, that Michigan degree is pretty damn nice if you're thinking about life after football.

...we need an Anotnio Bass/Jermaine Gonzales type. I thought we should've recruitied that kid out of Chicago with Jordan Diamond, Robert something?

Just someone to use as a weapon and in an emergency role. Similar to what we did with Devin last year, only hopefully we wouldn't ever need the guy to be the full time QB.

A few people have touched on the circumstances, but here is the related USA Today story which outlines them, in case anyone was interested (LINK).

The story basically reports that Bielema did say that he would consider Mitchell at WR, but it also says that this was news to Brandon Mitchell, hinting that he may not have known offhand that he was out of the running at starting QB. It also mentions that Mitchell had some difficulties in adapting to Jim Chaney's offense.

Here is what Mitchell said, presumably before the transfer and while still fighting for the starting QB job:

"With the competition not being over at quarterback, I'm just focused on strictly quarterback," Mitchell said at the time. "I don't even want to consider anything else right now. My mind's on quarterback."

Very small amount of transfers. Some have been HUGE players that impacted the program like Willie Heston's "unofficial" record of the most TDs in Michigan history that still stands to this day. "Crazy Legs" Hirsch, Lenny Ford, JT White, Howard Yerges.

The best thing I could see out of a situation like this is that it saves Morris from burning his redshirt.
