Everybody Hates Michigan (Edit: Not really...)

Submitted by Logan88 on

At least according to Phil Steele's 7/31 Blog.

According to the current results of his "You Pick 'Em" poll of conference results, UM will finish 3-5 in Big Ten play with victories over Indiana, Illinois and Purdue.

Voters only give UM a 15% chance to beat PSU, 19% chance of beating Iowa,  25% to beat Wisconsin and  a 47% chance of beating MSU.

it's mostly how every preseason thing is. they think of how each team was the year before and make their assessment that way. i wouldn't take it to seriously, especially penn state.

i mean, it's pretty well accepted that psu is gonna be worse, so with a 15% chance to beat them does that mean phil steele assumes we'll be an 0-12 team? that's about the only way i could rationalize it

The Wisdom of Crowds works only when it is a real crowd.

If you don't think that our Conference rivals have a special, sneering, vengeful hatred of Michigan, then you gotta go to more Conference road games.

We are the biggest game of the season, every other year in Madison.  No matter what.  Even if they have OSU or Iowa in town the same year.  MSU goes without saying.  In Columbus, we aren't just the biggest game of the football season.  We are the biggest day of the whole freaking year.  Christmas and New Year's are way, way down that list.

They all want to take down Michigan.  More.  Than.  Anything.

Add to that, the media hype that this is an on-the-edge year for Rich Rodriguez, and all of the national hype, fueled by the Free Press, that Michigan's program is shell-shocked and reeling from various and sundry "Rodriguez scandals," none of which seem to have much merit when they are looked at closely but who out there is really looking closely?

No, this is a perfect case when you don't want to apply the alleged "Wisdom of Crowds."  This would be like polling a single "crowd" from an NRA convention, or conversely an NAACP convention, to predict who will win an upcoming convention.  Yes, they are "crowds."  No, they are not the kinds of crowds that would provide you with representative "wisdom."

This is what is wrong with a lot of folks here - anyone who thinks Michigan will break even or lose more games than they will win are interpreted as "hating Michigan." Sports writers are the most prevalent target of this ire, but it seems anyone is fair game.

Get the fuck over yourselves. People might think we are not that good, but in all likelihood most do not care about us that much to "hate" us. Sometimes people look at the recent past to rationally predict the future. It doesnt mean they hate us, they just think the majority of teams we play are better than us. Stop crying about it.

Yes, I now see what you did there. I'm sorry I didn't perceive your incredibly *clears throat* witty attempt at humor that you now claim you did. I can definitely now see the relationship you drew between the TV show and people voting against Michigan winning. Crystal clear.

And I will chill out now, but only because you used caps to tell me to.

After getting their asses kicked by Michigan for 40 years or so, it is not surprising that a lot of people from other schools are enjoying our struggles and wish for the disappointment to continue.   The people on this site may take an overly optimistic view of UM's chances this season, but others who discount our chances may be following their own biases.

This time of year is really annoying. It's like when you've got about a 12 hour drive, and there's still an hour left. It feels like you're almost done, but nope, you still have to sit there  and wait it out. But what's worse is that unlike a car drive, the last stretch of college football offseason you have to listen to a whole parcel of douchebags making "predictions" about the upcoming season. "Phil Steele" sounds like a pornstar anyway. Who could possibly care what he says about Michigan?

....is a good thing. They'll be shown to not know WTF they are talking about when UM kicks ass this season and making all naysayers look like the fools that they are.

I have been listening to the Bo "the team" speech as of late.

All of this negativity will merely drive us harder.

The Bush pic sums it all up.

Let the skull-crackin' commence!

yesterday i got sucked into reading a post on the rivalry esquire, the B10 SBN blog. The blogger, I think it was somebody called Bama Hawkeye, had his top 20 predictions, and he said Michigan would win 8 games. At least.

There were at last check over 200 comments in the thread. And about half shred him for that prediction. I dont think I came across a single comment that supported that prediction.

The Vegas O/U for total wins is 7. But the Under is -130 while the Over is +120. That should tell you that the bookies expect more money to come in on the under so they're trying to dissuade some of that by making it the more expensive price of the two.

Indeed, everybody seems to be hating Mchigan..

We'll see, but I think their  time is running out.

4-0 OOC plus that 3-5 prediction gives us 7-5 which isn't far off of most predictions. Add in that the 47% against MSU Is basically a push and this basically gives a 6-6 to 8-4 prediction.
