Is Nebraska a paper tiger? Discuss.
Evening Games Open Thread
Gus Johnson is great. He makes the game so much more exciting. I dont know how anybody could not like his style. Nebraska needs to win this game for some B1G respect.
I'd rather have him for march madness than football.
Look at the stands at UCLA. That program is just a shell of it's former self.
Nebraska fans are there in force, or vast empty spaces!
nebraska fans are there in force but thats no surprise
NW needs to water their field. That field likes a nice combo of brown/light green. I guess they had to sacrafice for the new uni's and watering the field was put on hold.
looks quite bad there.
LSU is having its way with the Huskies. Les's team looks hungry.
Mizzou knock off UGA.
Of the 9 games that have been decided, the B1G is 5-4. Need the huskers to pull this one off.
They are on the road and missing 4 defensive starters. Still wish we had played a home-and-home with them.
If UCLA is stout on D and keeps the margin within single digits, one data point in the Yes column.
Martinez 92 yard TD run. Oh UCLA.
Jordan Zumwalt brought a Kovacs-esque "tackle of death" type stop there....not bad.
By the numbers, up until that Martinez run for a TD, UCLA had actually been besting Nebraska in this game. If Hundley and the UCLA offense could get a rushing game together, this could be a decent offense all-around.
Devin Lucien with a nice grab for UCLA.
is looking good so far for UCLA
Devin Funchess will be Rob Gronkowski, but FAST!!!
edit- sorry, thought i was still in the "freshmen contributions" thread.
References to a Devin is applicable in any thread because, as we all know, everyone's a Devin at heart
Fred? Is that you?
My take, Nebraska doesn't have the talent to be consistently good. They're basically Iowa, but wearing red.
I think they'll be a bit more talented year in and year out than Iowa.
I think Nebraska is more on the Wisco level of talent, where they recruit just below elite status. It will be interesting to see if they continue recruiting the state of Texas or if their move to the BigTen moves their recruiting base toward the generally weaker midwest.
but its never prevented us from getting elite results
Wasn't Osbrone getting elite level talent when you guys were winning national championships?
pretty much top 25, never a top 5
Our best recruiting classes were when the genius Callahan screwed up the program
Their fr RB, Amir Abdullah looks pretty shifty!
Total slopfest...SEC football baby!
Commentators in the UGA-Mizzou game: "Sometimes you get the bull, and sometimes the bull gets you"
Nebraska's defense...is not good.
They are lucky that UCLA's D is not very good either.
Bo Pelini's defense is getting cut apart like a hippie's hair at Borics.
wow....looks like neb also has defensive problems. they are getting dragged up and down the field.
Wait, when did FOX sports start replaying the 2010 UM-Illinois game? And what's up with their colors?
I'm so happy that Maher nailed that FG after the UCLA coach tried to ice him twice.
Jim Mora just took ANOTHER time out.
At Nebraska they like to party a lot, and go to class very little. That's what I learned from that ad
Robert Smith just said Taylor Martinez is faster than Denard.
Robert Smith is dumber than Matt Millen.
I heard that also, I was wondering who was talking out of thier ass.
Nebraska's first play on offense results in a fumble. UCLA ball. Converting a 3rd down will have to wait for a Nebraska offense that is beating itself really - the Bruins defense certainly isn't doing that.
Also, Brett Hundley is having a nice game - by himself, he has managed 250 total yards against the Cornhusker defense.
Joey Harrington in the Fox Studio at the half. This is not good.
Oops, sorry. All that triple option has me living in 1971 again.
commentators praising the "physicality" of the UCLA defense. Those two things do not go together.
The holding penalty aside, which incidentally gets Nebraska its first 3rd down conversion, the fact that corners are getting to Martinez on an otherwise tradionally ho-hum UCLA defense is very impressive.
Tied at 27 7:45 Q3
I cringe every time Martinez makes a throw. It's...just awful. It's like he's left-handed trying to throw with his right.
Good lord, you've at least got to put the ball in play on that throw UCLA
all they can handle.
UL Monroe and Arkansas are now tied.
in Tuscaloosa in 2007.
TD Northwestern to take the lead against Vandy.
UCLA D recovering from its temporary bout of competency.
Nebraska looks like it is wearing down UCLA's defense. Holes starting to open up.
And then they stiffen. Field goal no good...
Arkansas throws a pick.
I wonder if John L is going to slap himself after this game?
Georgia up 24-20 over Missouri start of 4th.
Mizzou fakes a punt, cedes 40+ yards of field position.
Battle of the smarty-pants features NW and Vandy tied at 13 late into the 4th.
flips the ball in desperation. What on earth does he think he is doing?
PS Charles Davis is awful.
SAFETY for UCLA! 29-27 Bruins with 8:44 left in the fourth quarter.
UCLA safeties Martinez 29-27 8:44 Q4
UGA FG good up 27-20 11:17 Q4
The Nebraska offensive line abandons Martinez and UCLA gets the safety. 29-27 UCLA in a game which can best be described as one that nobody exactly is trying terribly hard to win, except for the last play, an uncharacteristically opportunistic one by the Bruins.
THE SEAT OF MAJESTY AND FOOTBALL PROWESS!!!
ULM has to win this game. It's clear they want it more than Arkansas does.
I think UCLA has over 500 yards of offense at this point.
Like 540 last I checked
568 yards, to be exact, as of the latest update of the box score. The Nebraska defense really has not been there when it counted for them save for certain select plays. Brett Hundley has statistically had his way with a top 25 (as of the last poll) team tonight.
ULM goes for it on 4th down and wins...WOW
Yep. There it is. Nice!
UL-Monroe 34, Arkansas 31. Woooooooooooooow.
HORROR for Arkansas.
Is that worse than The Horror???
They downed Saban and and Bama in 2007.
Not even close. We were ranked #5 for the Horror. Arkansas was 8th. Also, they played an FBS team tonight.
Another missed FG in Westwood!
LOL LOL SLAP YOURSELF JOHN L!
ULM owns the sec west.
The kids played their hearts out, but John L Smith and his other coaches kept screwing it up!
Geez Arkansas...just turrible.
Why can't JLS be MSU's coach forever and always!?!?
Wherever he goes, there they are.
Those Arkansas kids played their tails off and the coaches are screwing it up!
Fuck you, SEC.
Two weeks into the college football season and I guess we know now that you don't want your team ranked 8th in the nation.
Has been mentioned in Heisman conversations? Having a horrible half when his team needs him.
It would help if they could block some.
Also, Nebraska clearly has a problem tackling Johnathan Franklin. They bounce off him like defensive players in Tecmo Bowl. Maybe Franklin is in "excellent."
Haha! Our smart team is going to beat your smart team SEC!
from UCLA is special....
Devin Lucien just made a great catch in the UCLA-Nebraska game. . . sigh.
Not gonna lie, we could use him at CB as well...
If Neb wins after giving up 600 plus, I will be speechless.
Huge UGA int returned to the 1 yard line.
Perhaps the last chance for Nebraska. 3:23 left.
Interception UCLA. Bruins recover and have the ball inside the Nebraska 20.
throwing an Effis pitch into the UCLA secondary.
EDIT: Off his back foot, too. Just awful.
Apparently Ted Williams was the only person ever to hit a HR off the Eephus pitch. Even then, he knew it was coming and was out of the batter's box when he hit it.
intercepted by UCLA
Interception for UCLA.
Martinez INT. Huskers on the ropes.
To answer the OP's question. Yes, they are a paper tiger.
for Bo Pelini stat. Hurry!
Martinez might have one more chance to prove me wrong, but he is not ready for primetime.
The Nebraska defense has now let 617 total yards pass them up, and I assume that regardless of tonight's outcome, the chances of Pelini being apoplectic on the flight home will be reasonably good. This will be a largely silent trip for the Cornhuskers either way.
That INT will definitely not help with time running short either. At least we know that Martinez is still an excellent passer so long as someone from the opposing team is near an eligible receiver.
Yeah so I think we can beat Nebraska.....
TD UCLA. The cracking sound you hear is the breakup of our traditional Big Ten dignity.
Good lord the B1G is terrible.
to utilize Norfleet like UCLA does Franklin. Get him in open space.
I have to say that I hate the Illinois helmets. Always have.
Soooo...Arizona is doing pretty well against Okie St so far...
how is this guy successful everywhere but michigan? maybe jeff casteel knew something.
i've been thinking about a trip to bolivian...
Good thing the whole B1G vs Pac 12 thing is done because they are destroying us.
It would be nice if they came to the Midwest for a change. Illinois beat them last year.
Mizzou is self-destructing. Turnover in own red zone.
Martinez supposedly worked on his mechanics. Sure as hell doesn't look like it.
To their credit, UCLA is doing everything they can to leave the door open for Nebraska.
Yes, yes they are
TD UGA. Mizzou is toast.
UCLA over Nebraska 36-30 is your final.
I smell blood.
But they kind of do. A bunch of teams in front of us lost pretty bad games so we should move up at least 3 spots to #16. If we can sneak by ND we could be looking at a pretty collosal matchup with MSU later.
I don't care that they're in our conference now. I still love watching Nebraska lose.
This has been an awful day for the Big Ten.....Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn St., Nebraska, and Illinois is on their way. Hey, Minnesota is 2-0! So is Indiana!
