ESPN Video: Michigan Football Virtual Reality

Submitted by mgobluth on

Embedded below is Tom VH trying out the Michigan VR app (In case embed doesn't work, here is the link) . It's a free download from the App Store in iOS, although I'm sure there's an Android version as well. The iOS App Store says this has been out since August, but couldn't find anything on the board talking about its release.

I've been on the fence about trying VR technology paired with a phone, but being able to replicate the gameday experience of a player and be in the locker room with Harbaugh may push me towards trying it out.

I was actually working this summer for the Ross Academic Center while they were recording some of these and it was pretty cool to see. I talked to one of the guys recording the images inside and he showed me some of the other stuff they've done including a trip down whitewater rapids. They were going through every relevant building this past summer to record everything for this. For the academic center, they were just getting pictures of the place as empty, so we had to move out of the areas that they were shooting in.

thanks for the link. I had completely forgotten about the MichiganVR app. Had tried to find it back in September, after the film crew stopped by our tailgate on AAGO and filmed us playing cornhole. On to the app store...

Thanks for posting this. It may have been in the App Store, but I sure didn't know about it. It's really pretty impressive in the views it gives of the school. Not many places make stuff like this. Ah, the Michigan Difference . . .

Google Cardboard is pretty awsome technology.  I am really interested to see where it heads next.  As a teacher, I got the opportunity to experience Google Expeditons, which is virtual field trips for students to take in their classroom.

Check it out if you are interested here: https://www.google.com/edu/expeditions/

I've been playing with Google Cardboard lately. If you get the Google Street View app you can view anywhere in the world that has street view in VR. That includes standing on the M at the 50 yard line at Michigan Stadium. Pretty amazing stuff.

Had trouble finding it in the App Store, but if you search for "MichiganVR" (no spaces) it comes right up. Also, was trying to find it to download to my iPad, but it's an iPhone app only....
