ESPN says Manny should stay

Submitted by MichTits on
ESPN lists borderline draftable/undraftable underclassmen that have entered the NBA draft, and says that Manny is looking at a sure 2nd round pick, but has the talent to be a first rounder if he returns for another year. Its an Insider story, but nothing we didn't already know. http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/blog?name=nba_draft&id=5139507&&appRedir… Did he already hire an agent, or no? Because I thought he had.

he had not hired an agent. The newspaper headline was something like "Manny: No agent, but no turning back." Haven't seen any official updates since.

probably made the right decision for himself financially. It's unlikely that he's going to improve his stock any better than it is right now as a JR. You can always make good money playing overseas at 6 figures. You might as well get a one year headstart in terms of salary. He may get a shot of playing in the NBA if he does good enough at Euro league.

I think your financial calculation is doomed by this huge assumption: "It's unlikely that he's going to improve his stock any better than it is right now as a JR." Why is that? You don't think he might shoot better? Emerge as a leader? Win more games? I think any one of the above helps his stock considerably. He has ability, he is a wildcard. Another year could do much to quell the many doubts about his ability to shoot the ball or play hard 3 games in a row. One extra year of European salary does not offset making an NBA roster, and his odds of doing that are dicey right now.

You're playing the odds either way. He could regress, he could suffer a devastating injury...very true. But I'm with Chad Ford on this one, I think he's a 1st Round pick if he'd stayed. And that makes $$.

Another possibility; Manny will never be good enough for the NBA. If true getting a year head start on you European basketball career, is possibly the best route. After last season, I thought Manny was poised to play himself into the Lottery this year, instead Manny now seems further away from the first round than last year.

was never considered to be a NBA lottery type and I don't recall ever hearing that he's poised to jump into the lottery rank before this past season. If I was Manny, I'd rather be undrafted than get drafted in the 2nd round. It's essentially the same thing except that 2nd round, you get stuck with one team who drafted you instead of getting the option to choose the best possible route to get into the NBA. If you're not in the 1st round, I'd be praying to be undrafted especially when you're already a marginal 2nd rounder.

No Manny was never considered a NBA lottery type, but I thought he might develop into one this past season, I was pointing out my shortcomings not Manny's:) Um the best possible route to the NBA, is getting drafted in the first round(the higher the better), not getting drafted cannot be spinnded into a positive. I understand what you are saying, but the odds of an undrafted free agent making a NBA roster are daunting. Manny should save his prayers for something better

I think the odds of Michigan having a better season and/or Manny improving are still significantly higher than the odds of him suffering a major injury. That's not to say it couldn't happen, but still.

He's weighing the possibilities, and the possibility of getting injured or not improving anymore than he has is non-zero. There are coaching changes and a freshman big man, so there's no guarantee of smooth sailing. What I found particularly interesting was the statement that Manny's "attitude" has hurt his draft stock. Attitude during the season? Attitude since declaring? What??

I'm not sure that Michigan is better with Manny on the team. I think part of the reason that we were so shitty this year was that when Manny had the ball, everyone else stood around and watched him go 1 on 5. I know size was also a BIG issue with out team, but his slasher style just didn't seem to fit Beilein's system. He is a great individual player, but I don't think the team is better with him out there. We need good 3 point shooting at the 2-3 spot, and Manny is not going to become a shooter all of a sudden.

My counter is that if Europe is his ceiling this year, why not stick around and finish his degree (which will help him after his career with basketball) and maybe, just maybe sneak into the 1st round? It's not like playing internationally will not still be an option for him next year. As for the danger of injuries, look no further than Sam Bradford as an example of a guy who didn't see his draft stock hurt by injuries. I know football is different and all, but if you have talent, teams today have faith in medical advancements to basically heal any type of injury a player suffers.

Manny came into college expecting to be 2-3 years and done. He stuck around this year for a chance to do something with Sims and maybe make a run in the tourney. From my observations, I think he just doesn't want to play college ball, go to college classes etc. He is ready to be paid for playing a sport and he is prepared to go to Europe if that is his only option. I guess he figures he can come back to U of M and finish his degree if he needs it later.

Maybe he just liked playing with Sims and wanted to do it one more year and see what happened even though he never fit (and I suspect didn't like) JB's approach. I think we'll never know, but this ship has sailed and I can see Warren and Manny waving goodbye from the back as it leaves the Mdock.

You might be right, but I also thought he was an academic all Big-10 kid this season as well. Even if he is just joking around with classes, but clearly is smart enough to succeed in the classroom. At this point, why not stick around for another year, get a degree, then take a shot at the pros? I guess that is just the student in me talking, but if they had paid for me to attend UM and I wasn't guaranteed a contract, I would have at least finished my degree.

So you're telling me that if you didn't need a degree to go into the profession you aspire to go into and were ready to go into it today, you would wait an extra year to start your dream job? Getting a degree would be helpful in life, but does not help your basketball career, and Manny wants to be a basketball player, not an accountant.

Some googling turns up 5 million stories saying Manny "will" hire an agent, there's no turning back, etc. I haven't found a story stating that an agent was in fact hired... (not saying he hasn't...just don't see that he did)

There is so much more competition vying for those draft spots; a ton of college teams sending players to get drafted by NBA teams that only have but a few spots available on the roster. If you haven't got your @$%! together, you aren't being drafted.
