I'd be thrilled, obviously, but I'd be very surprised if he comes to Michigan.
ESPN Rumor Central: Arnett leaning towards going Blue
Here's an interesting question for debate: If Rodriguez can pull in guys like Dee Hart, DeAnthony Arnett, Marquise Williams (??), and others (defenders?) that were seriously considering other programs until watching Michigan play this year, how does that sit with Rodriguez haters/dislikers? Does him pulling in a good recruiting class after struggling his first three years here make any difference in their opinions?
Fully agree with that, but as Brian said earlier this year (back when we was 5-0), it will be next year's class that will really benefit. I lot of this year's kids have already committed, made plans, made friends with other recruits and guys on the team. Hard for them to switch. If we continue to do well this year and into the bowl, next year should be the big 'un. Especially if RR job speculation has ended, as you mention
Agreed. Next year's schedule is also one of the easiest I can remember. If we can win the games we're supposed to next year we should have a great record which will definitely help on the recruiting front.
does this incoherent mess even mean? last i checked UM has a top 30 class right now for 2011. and there are a lot of top recruits still on the board, including Arnett. If RR just lands a few of these kids, we're probably looking at a top 15 class.
Who is this "Brian" anyway? If that is his real name...
Isn't Rodriguez the one who said something like, "If they ain't signed, they could still be mined"? OR did he say, "Until he signs, he could be mines"?
When you think of Brian, does Johnny Cochran pop into your head?
I believe to enable someone, they have to actually listen to you. I'm pretty sure Rich Rod doesn't read the MGoBoard.
We're probably still away from getting 5-star recruits
Watch for Dee Hart to grab his fifth star by the end of the year. He currently sits as the next player in line to get it. Also, though we have a (very?) small chance we are in on maybe HaHa or Karlos Williams, both 5* safeties.
You are assuming the M staff consults Rivals and Scout when evaluating a player. If the recruiting services don't rank a player a high 4*, then M shouldn't recruit them? You need to stop believing everything you read on Scout and Rivals.
RR and staff use their own criteria for recruits, not rivals.com it seems that speed is weighted a lot more heavily in what they are looking for
why was this comment negged. not that i care about pts. this comment is probably true. i upped you out of principal.
and I would add that if we finish 8-5 after the bowl game we should get some love from defensive recruits as well. The argument is, we have killer offense but a horrible defense. If you come here player x (cough cough, Clinton-Dix, cough cough) you will be an instant starter and make our defense a little better so that we can compete for a national title next year. Rodriguez is safe and all we need is you Mr. 5 star to make this promising young defense competent. Show them the defensive line-Martin, Roh, VanBergen. Show them the linebackers- Demens, Fitzgerald and then show them their competition at DB. We should pull in at least a couple 4-5 star dbs in this class when all is said and done.
I wouldn't count on that.
I think the reply would be to argue that Michigan should be getting top-10 recruiting classes every year, no matter what. I imagine if you're anti-RR at this point, you're going to be anti regardless of the kids he brings in this year.
You should really stick to arguing for your own side. At least several of the strong, yet thoughtful, RR detractors on here think recruiting will make a big difference (myself included).
You didn't refute his point. He said the argument would be that RR should have a top 10 class every year. So you think recruiting would make a difference? wow that's a bold statement. But do the RR haters actually believe that RR CAN bring in a top 10 class every year? With all the 3 star hate I've seen, I'm thinking the haters don't believe he can.
You have got to be kidding me - a reply based on lack of comprehension, that bring in some outside arguments about 3 stars, and a neg. Wow. He said " I imagine if you're anti-RR at this point, you're going to be anti regardless of the kids he brings in this year." The attempted implication of my response was to say "not so, I am anti-RR at this point, yet I could change my mind due to this year's recruiting class." I am not sure why was difficult to comprehend.
very difficult, imo. it's my understanding that the scouting services rate players based on "pro" potential. RR recruits a lot of guys who don't normally score well for "pro potential" (small speedy guys and dual threat QBs). that can hurt an overall "site" ranking, but still be very good for college and RR's schemes.
Double post, sorry
BlueBlueBlue, I am pro-Rodriguez and would like to think that a masterful job of putting together a recruiting class (meaning nabbing some sought-after kids) might change at least a few minds but wasn't sure if that would be the case.
However, as a lawyer, I'm all about playing devil's advocate and I think dwinning raised a valid point. Not all anti-Rodriguez people will agree, but I'm sure some thing that way.
Does him pulling in a good recruiting class after struggling his first three years here make any difference in their opinions?
Frankly, I expect any Michigan coach to recruit well. If he were not able to do so, that would be a red flag. But ultimately, how we do on the field is what's most important. Last Saturday was a step in the right direction. I hope and expect to see us take another step this Saturday.
Profit - I appreciate the non-accusatorial, non-confrontational question posed to we the RR detractors (I am not a 'hater'). As for an answer, my argument has been based on the feedback loops from this transitional period to future periods; in essence the terrible transition making any future success quite difficult. The strongest, perhaps most influential feedback loop is obviously recruiting. If RR can pull in a strong class this year - I mean a top 15 class - then that says a lot about the potential success in his future here. Wins and losses mean a lot, but so do the non-quantitative factors, such as the 'feeling' kids get from the place and the program, their relationships with coaches and players, how they perceive that the current players like being here, reputation, how passionate the fans are, and so on.
His ability to pull in a strong recruiting class, and to keep the vast majority of that class, to me means he is leading and managing well on that front - and those two important attributes have been my biggest problems with RR thus far. In short, it will make a big difference in my perception of RR's likely success here.
Agree - the class we got last year was impressive after the two previous seasons; getting a better class this year will, to me, be more impressive.
On a related point - bringing in a good class this year means RR will ensure us that he can manage well on that front, but I don't think it will be the result of any change in management philosophy - just perhaps an improvement in the same approach. What will really make me believe he can succeed here is if he changes his management philosophy/approach for the defense. Namely, if he fires his buddies on the defensive staff and either lets Gerg pick his own staff or lets whatever new DC comes in pick his own staff. That will bolster my faith in RR, not so much because of the change in staff, but because he is willing to change his philosophy.
who??? turner and lalotta. anyone else? unless you're going to the initial year with booboo. are you counting dorsey too? still, i don't see that being 20%.
I wouldn't say I fit in as a hater or skeptic but someone who thought he was the best choice at the time (post Bill Martin Sailing Incident/Oh no Les Miles) but still wanted to see how his past translated to the Big Ten.
Yeah clearly offensive recruits will jump to him based on how his system can highlight their abilities. However, still has to sell me on getting defensive recruits, particularly ones that will clear the NCAA Clearinghouse. I'm sold on the offense but I still think that the rumblings I'm hearing for removal of the defensive staff and a David Brandon led decision on a new Defense Czar (particularly if that person has Michigan ties) may be a nice option. If we can start pulling in some defensive recruits that are regarded on the same level nationally as Arnett and Dee Hart, then we'll be talking.
Your post in short: Hey RR haters, now that we are getting in top recruits with this offense tell me, "how do you like dem apples"?
I'd expect nothing less from you. If I meant that, I would have typed it. Contrary to popular opinion, I'm not a complete idiot.
If you're feeling self-conscious about your opinion, that's your own problem - do not try to pin it on me. Thanks.
I love our back and forth. At least we can remain civil. Well sometimes. +1
a totally pointless exercise. Well, I suppose that's true of all recruits, but you know what I mean. I'll get excited about Arnett if he signs with UM on signing day. If not, no worries. Just no reason to chase every angle.
and paid sites and Sam Webb on WTKA say he is not going to MI.
ESPN is more often wrong than not.
I'll be glad for the surprise and welcome it, I do not expect it.
I don't think Sam has said he is "not going to MI" just that he'd be surprised if he did. I think he's said recently that this weekends visit gave Arnett something to think about with regards to Michigan and that Michigan "in his opinion" is trailing MSU and Tennessee.
become an unexpected decommit? When rumor mills throw out a claim that a player is going to commit, and when they don't it makes RR look as if he cannot hold commits all when they were never a commit in the first place.
that he's coming to Michigan.
of course you have to be a dam insider to read it,
What does structural engineering have to do with this?
that Jimmy Hoffa is a dam insider, or a freeway insider.
Yeah I don't know. He has seemed to be one to play around with everyone on his recruitment, so who knows other than him. It would be a great get to have him as a WR, but I would not be surprised or heart broken if he goes elsewhere.
he really must have enjoyed that trip to Boise last weekend.
I understand it seems unlikely he goes blue but I think there are many reasons he may end up here. It seems that is brother is a big michigan fan and they seem close according to what I've read. Additionally Michigan has its QB situation basically cemented in for the next 4 years, that type of stability won't be found anywhere else. It was be interesting to see what happens, but unfortunately if he signs up I think Watkins will be clemson boound.
Assuming talent level is near equal, I would rather take a recruit from Michigan Agricultural than Clemson.
Gotta figure that's why there is all this interest about this recruit on here. He's awesome, but getting the attention of awesome talents at wide out is the norm. Plus defense is all we talk about usually.
We want to see State fail really bad and are tired of the "owning the state of michigan" MSM articles.
We can stomach it if we have to, but Arnett would be a great addition if he surprises us.
ESPN has always been effective in reporting rumors that eventually become true. /s
hahahahahahahah, wait a minute!
But Rivals also reported that all five teams have recently received positive feedback on his recruitment and that today/tomorrow should be exciting.
but this is a guy that likes to mess with reporters and fans WRT his recruitment. In fact, he has made a sport out of messing with people's heads. So it's hard to take anything he says seriously.
I don't blame him either. I think it's pretty hilarious when recruits mess with overinvested fans (like myself).
But the post if full of speculation and "coulds". It's a just a title to get people to click on the link of same ol' same ol'.
Anything meaningful has already been shared on this board.
I 100% agree that its all speculation, and seemingly baseless as well. However, I just thought that it being out there was worth posting. More of a just saying this guy is saying type of thing.
Makes no mention of Tennessee being the leader, which Sam Webb has said the past couple days it is. Combine that with the other "conventional wisdom" used in the article and it doesn't seem that substantive to me. I'd put little faith in this.
he did come to ann arbor this weekend to see an epic game
and the 'no pass' offense did have a receiver w/ about 250 yards
its about time recruits start going our way
I would be surprised if he went Blue, but can you blame him for getting all starry-eyed after seeing what Roundtree, Hemingway, and Co. did this weekend?
Dude, please don't get any hopes up. From day one he said he wants to play in a pro style offense. He only came in for a visit at the last minute. He hasn't been on us at all until very very recently... I just feel like he will be a Spartan and it kind of feels like this situation is just setting us up for more "Sparty dominates in-state recruiting" headlines, which may or may not be planned/whispered in his ear (remember Pryor?) by the Spartan coaches. They have been negatively recruiting us real hard and if they know they have a kid they might be able to sway him into doing something like this... Of course this is all my crazy brain at work and nothing is substaintiated, but like, it seems at least somewhat likely based on the circumstances. I would love to see it happen for us, but I really really doubt it.
A simple, "he's not coming" would have done just fine. Now I'm going to kick rocks on the way to my car for lunch.
Sorry about your vagina.
/I'm 12 years old
I didn't quite follow the logic, but Sam Webb said that he wanted to keep his visit this past weekend quiet b/c he didn't want it to seem like he was adding Michigan to his list just to add drama to his recruitment...Sam has also twice now said that Tenn and MSU are his guesses as Arnett's favorites, so I also don't think we should get our hopes up.
You may very well be correct.
You don't follow the logic that a kid who hypothetically is in the bag for MSU would want to make us look bad?
I didn't quite follow Arnett's logic of having a "secret" visit to U of M so that the Michigan coaches didn't feel like they were being used. The reality is that the "secret" visit became (obviously) not-so-secret and that this is what was always going to happen.
FWIW, Sam says that he thinks Arnett likes Tenn the most but will default to MSU if school location becomes a factor, so I don't think Arnett is in the bag for MSU.
It might have remained a secret if he hadn't shown up. Sam had a similar story last year with a committed player who ended up not making the trip. I don't think we ever learned who it was.
i seem to remember a dude named pryor...
One more day until we know. Dee and Dee. Sounds good to me.
that while UM certainly improved its chances with his visit, it would be either Tennessee or MSU in the end. I'd put much more stock in Webb's assessment than ESPN's.
....This blurb is written by Bill Kruelic who is a massive douche bag and huge fuckeye homer. I'm sure he is writing this so wednesday he can follow up with another article that says, "RR and Michigan let hometime WR slip away as [blank team] pulls off an upset." It is a good rule of thumb to ignore everything Bill Kruelic has to say, he deserves to be punched in the face.
Eh.... "fuckeyes" and conspiracy theory in one post?
I think Tom VH gave us subtle hints the month leading up to Dee Hart that led most of the community to believe he was coming. I haven't seen anything from VH (about Arnett) that sounds hopefull. It seems like we weren't even on Arnett's radar 4 weeks ago. Conventional wisdom says we can't steal him in the last week or 2 prior to his announcement.
I gotta believe that with this offense, we should have no problem attracting 4+ star WRs. If Arnett goes elsewhere, hopefully not to MSU, then we move on. Is it just me, I thought I've heard more more buzz about Arnett as Junior than as a Senior?
LaMarr Woodley would like to discuss this with you.
i get the feeling that his announcement won't end his recruiting.
I agree with dudeness. It's not that I don't trust Rivals/ESPN.....No, wait a minute, I don't trust ESPN. They are more often wrong. Even though I had heard from someone that Dee hart was a silent commit, I was still waiting for the announcement. I just didn't believe it. I guess with Arnett being basically off our radar screen for so long, I just don't see it happening. Otherwise, Tom VH would have told us that we have a real shot at this guy. I give it a 10% chance of happening.
He wants the ball in wide open spaces. What better offense than ours. He comes here and with 8 men in box triing to shut down the run he will be left alone in the deep secondary.
Heeps of yards, heeps of touchdowns.
He would look good with a #1 on his jersey.
A gut feeling from Sam Webb would make me a little more confident :)
If he decides to go to the best school in Michigan and don the maize and blue then good for him. He'll do well and win 4 big ten championships. On the other hand, if he decides to go to Sparty or elsewhere we'll be okay and good luck to him.
I have insider: the post is speculation based on his lack of a visit to Knoxville--he's scheduled to official this weekend--and a quote about Roundtree Kurelic got. Nothing to see here. I don't think anyone really knows, as this is a weird recruitment.
I agree his recruitment mostly has been bs from the beginning. He seems to be trying to throw everyone off or messing around for fun; but why is he announcing his choice this Wed night if he is visiting any school this weekend? If he is visiting the same school he is announcing as his choice this Wednesday, why not wait until after the visit? And he can't be announcing one school on Wednesday and visiting a different school on Saturday, can he? That would be totally bizarre.
Anything until you hear it from his mouth on Wednesday!
don't believe it till January when he signs the dotted line.
Sorry, but I would rather have Ray Drew or Kris Frost or nearly any 4 or 5 star LB, CB, S or DE.
yes, and i would rather have a winning lottery ticket than these steak tacos that i just ordered, but that doesn't mean that i won't really enjoy these steak tacos.
He's going to be a Vol. Raback it.
It would be nice to see him in Maize and Blue, I see him heading out to Cali. Either going to Cal or USC. Although Michigan has come at him pretty hard recently with the bye week, and was at the shootout game. As long as he doesn't go to State.
Reports from Sam Webb who seems to be close to DeAnthony's brother (who's advising him closely) indicate he doesn't want to be that far away from home. Seems that he will choose State if even Tennessee is too far away. And who knows how strongly he's considering us.
I like a lot of your opinions, but you really need to check out Strunk and White, or whatever currently serves as the popular style manual. Correct usage and grammar would help you communicate your opinions in a way that a lot more readers would find palatable.
I posted this thread in another Arnett thread, but it was near the bottom.
Tom's post is 1/3 down from the top. He thinks that Arnett, Walls, and Zettel will not go to MSU. Some sparty lover was making claims that all 3 may go to MSU.
So, there may be hope for Arnett, but at least he won't be Sparty. This was a while back so Tom may have an update, but I will wait on Tom or just wait 1 more day.
Yes but as I noted, that poster was implying that Sparty was going to land all 3 and you can read Tom's message to mean "I am 100% sure that MSU will not end up with all 3."
That wasn't my first intrepretation but I think you have a better point. I guess I allowed my own emotion to affect my interpretation.
Couple things that have been thrown out elsewhere lately:
1.) MSU actually seems like they're out of it at this point.
2.) Michigan has been on Arnett's radar for a lot longer than a lot of people here seem to think. This visit wasn't just some random flier; he had been planning it for a while. Fred Jackson has been recruiting him for a long, long time, and he definitely knows he's wanted here.
Fred Jackson to DeAnthony Arnett:
"DeAnthony, if the Lord himself were to become a wide receiver he'd glide across the field almost as smoothly as you".
and it goes completely against my earlier "I don't think he's coming here" opinion.
As Brian noted, his recruitment has been weird. No one knows his final destination for sure. He has been spreading crazy things about Boise State, adding and dropping schools, etc. Clearly, he wants his choice to be a surprise. We also know that he went to great lengths to keep his visit to Michigan under wraps and was tweeting stuff about BSU while at Michigan. Other things we have going for us:
- He grew up a Michigan fan
- He's instate (though at an MSU school)
- He wants to stay close to home
- The coaches never stopped recruiting him and were at his school during the bye-week
- He saw a great passing game Saturday
- We were the last school to visit before the decision
My half-baked theory - he wants his choice to be a surprise and him choosing Blue will be the surprise.
Seems to me that a lot of people are coming up with reasons for him to not come to Michigan.
Here are a couple reasons that I believe that he will.
1. Our helmets got wings.
2. Our offense is putting up some insane numbers and those are sure to get you noticed.
3. NCAA and freep(os) are through investigating
4. Unlike those who went to east lansing, he can qualify for UM.
5. Dang it. Because I want him to.
How about this? In this offense, he will get a ton of one-on-one opportunities. He is a very good route runner judging by film and others evaluation, which means he can beat one-on-ones frequently = many opportunities to make catches and run with the ball (e.g. Roundtree).
If I was a WR and just saw UM go gansta on Illinois and Roundtree break the record for WR's at a school where Carter, Edwards, Avant, Toomer, etc. etc. went. I might think twice.
Then again I'm 39 and out of shape. So living vicariously through young sports stars is all I got.
Isn't it awesome?
Sorry if this has been discussed, but would we take Arnett and Watkins if they wanted to play here?
Yeah you need to fill some needs on defense but If you can get a player like Arnett who you really like, why not take him?
If watkins and crawford are a paiute I wouldn't complain too hard about 3 more wr.
who "Rabacked it" yesterday about 1/3 way down the page...
Honestly that title does not sum up the report at all. There's nothing in there that says he's leaning towards Ann Arbor.
There is a ton of information floating around right now. I've heard decently credible people say Tenn, MSU, USC, and yes, even Michigan. Cal doesn't seem to be getting a lot of love, but who knows. Arnett's keep a lot of people in the dark, and unless it somehow leaks out after the phone calls today, I'm willing to bet it will be a surprise tomorrow for a lot of people.
Hopefully it is true and it's not just a fluke like when Dee Hart said he was leaning towards Bama just to keep everyone guessing.
Isn't it great what one awesome Saturday can do for things?
He has always liked Ann Arbor and the University. If we had Ryan Mallett and a pro-style he would have committed to us a long time ago. He was convinced by some negative recruiting that Rodriguez has a run only spread that will not get him enough catches to get him to the NFL. He now sees that is bullshit. I don't know if he is coming here, but I would not be surprised at all if he did considering how positively he felt about Rodriguez and the team after the Illinois game. How could you not like this offense when not only do you have the leading rusher in the nation but also can break receiving records?
Can he play corner/safety against Wisky and OSU? We need the help.
This comment is a little played out don't you think? It's almost as worse as people using "GERG" when talking about our Defensive Coordinator.
That's b/c you don't understand the GERG history.
It seems like a big joke! The only comment that made since is about the females in So Cal.
He was also in Boise on Saturday...
De Arnett Is Blue. I'll take your word for it.
@DArnett13: "Sorry fans Im sorry I had a change of Heart); sorry SC FANS!
Are you still calling your shot that he is blue?
but don't we need some four and five starrers on the defensive side of the ball?
