Threet, who will be a senior in 2011, has suffered four concussions, three of which occurred last season. The source said Threet is still suffering from post-concussion syndrome and deals with constant headaches.

"Doctors have told him a fifth concussion could be debilitating," said the source. "You don't want to be 35 years old and can't hold up a cup of coffee."

Last season, Threet completed 62 percent of his passes, throwing for 2,534 yards with 18 touchdowns and 16 interceptions for the Sun Devils. He was sacked 23 times for ASU (6-6). It was his first season of play since transferring from Michigan, where he was the Wolverines' starting quarterback in 2008.

The 6-5, 240-pound Threet, who is on schedule to graduate in December, will likely remain close to the program and help as a student assistant and work with the QBs, the source said.

Arizona State begins spring football in the last week of March. Rising junior Brock Osweiler, who started the final two games of the 2010 season (both Sun Devils wins), is expected to be the team's No. 1 quarterback.

Was he paid at Michigan, or just ASU?

<br>More seriously, tough career. Hope he gets his education and makes the best of it.

Always liked the kid, and wish him the best.  Probably the best decision for him - again, you want to be able to function well beyond your playing days.

That's a shame. I always thought he could have been really good, everything pretty much went against him his whole career. All the best to him.

Had no idea he got banged up that much this year.  Hard to believe they would just send him back out there after a second concussion in one season (especially in an offense that was basically just him dropping back and chucking it on every down).  I had one concussion in high school and wanted to die for a few days.  Can't imagine doing it again.  And again.

Sounds like a good move to get away from the game, focus on his education, and start his life/career with his health intact.  Good luck to him.

I was positive that was from his time with us, not last year. A real shame, he should have had a good college career. He had some talent.

Perhaps this will provide a quick way to begin working as an assistant coach, if that's what he wants to do.

Steven for the best runaway thundering buffalo since John Navarre.

Thank you for sticking it out during the year of most infinite pain.

Thank you for coming across as a class act.

Good luck wherever life takes you.  I'm sure this was one of if not the single most difficult decisions you ever have had to make.  Don't second guess it.  Nothing comes close to your health in terms of impacting your future quality of life.

Good game.

The coaches should have never let him play this year after sustaining the second concussion. I really liked him as a player, he just caught some really tough breaks at all three of his stops.

Mental health is more important than football.  Don't think most people would have the maturity to make that decision, so good for him.  It takes a lot of intellegence and will power to give up the adulation for somethng you might not notice for thirty years.

That really blows. He got the run-around at GTU and UM, and had finally set himself up for a nice run. He's a good, smart kid, too. Smart enough to not risk catastrophe.

Steven is very intelligent to make this decision.  It can't be a very easy decision to make, either.  He's a good kid and he will be better off for it.  He'll have a healthier future, too.

All the BEST to #10.

he gets tenure as a Michigan Man to me.

Put into a genuinely impossible situation in '08, never once heard him complain, whine about the system, bitch about his bad luck, lash back at the ridiculous criticism, etc.  Just strapped on his winged helmet and did the best he could every game.  When he left, he left honorably.  That'll do, Steve Threet, that'll do.

Too bad to hear this, hopefully he can finish out his degree and have a long career ahead of him in the normal world.

He may not have been able to pursue his dream any further but he followed it further than 99% of us.

This is too bad.   It's also too bad that an ASU degree doesn't hold nearly as much shine as a UM degree.  Maybe he can transfer back for academics or something, as I understand this kid was a top-flight student.

Thanks for your efforts here Mr. Threet. Not only does this stink for him, it stinks for the sport that is adored by hundreds of millions of fans. The long term health of football players is something that many of us don't think about, but is getting increasing attention. It's a double edged sword; as much as I love to see my beloved Wolverines, Lions, and to as lesser extent the Steelers take the field, I cringe at what could be awating these guys years down the road.
