ESPN Ranks all current NBA Players; Morris & Harris

Submitted by mgokev on

ESPN has released their rankings of the 500 current NBA players with a rating on a 0 to 10 scale.  Their methodolgy is as follows:

We asked 91 experts to rate each player on a 0-to-10 scale, in terms of "the current quality of each player."

And...

To decide which players to rank, we started with every player who played in the league last season, and then eliminated players who had signed overseas contracts that made them ineligible for the 2011-12 NBA season. Then we added the 60 members of the 2011 draft class, eliminating those not likely to play in the NBA by 2012. That left 500 players, according to our best information as of August 15.

Manny Harris comes in with a rating of 2.63/10 good for 405th out of 500.  Darius Morris came in lower at 473 with a rating of 1.84/10 only besting 27 other NBA players according to the panel of experts detailed here.

The rankings of 401-500 can be found here.

Obviously this is all subjective, but hopefully they can prove the so-called experts wrong and make an impact next season.

No offense to Darius Morris but given the fact that he was drafted in the 2nd round of the NBA Draft and hasn't played a single NBA game yet, being ranked above a meager 30-something players in the league is probably fairly accurate until proven otherwise.

Scalabrine has been in the NBA 10 years.  Darius Morris was the 41st pick in the draft.  Do you want to know how many 41st picks go on to have 10 year NBA careers?  Here's a hint - not many.

I hope Darius bucks the odds and has a long and prosperous NBA career, but to suggest that a 2nd round draft pick who has yet to play a game should "obviously" be ranked ahead of a 10 year veteran shows a complete lack of understanding of basketball.

I'm still confused about the lack of playing time Manny received last year for an abysmal cavs squad when he performed so solidly in the few minutes he received.
