The ESPN PTI guys love Jim Harbaugh

Submitted by wolverine1987 on

Tony Kornheiser led off the Friday show saying "Jim Harbaugh does something wonderful." Then later in the show he and Wilbon discussed the satellite camp issue, Harbaugh's "fabulous" response, Jed York's stupid decision, how Harbaugh is so good for the B1G, and for bonus points, Nick Saban's complete lack of a sense of humor.

Harbaugh will not be out-coached like his predecessor was. I believe we had a bye week 2 out of the last three years and still could not come up with a decent game plan against them. Two things we know about college football, you need an experienced QB and a good head coach. We are half way there and we will see about QB play come August. We know Sparty has both. Time to compete.

Easy killer.

I would like to take this time to clarify something it appears you do not understand. This is a UM blog where inevitably, Staee and O$U are going to be ripped for being the turd programs with turd coaches that they are. This is irrespective of the amount of ass-kicking that has occurred recently, or over the last 100 years.

If you are looking for objective commentary, I suggest you stop visiting here and check out FoxSports or CBS Sports.

Sincerely,

All of us

But seriously and objectively, Harbaugh has gotten more media coverage this off season without coaching a game at Michigan and has gotten more media coverage than "Mr. Magnetic Personality" Mark Dantonio.  He can lurk like a "snake in the grass," but Harbaugh brought machetes to Ann Arbor on top of Hackett mowing the lawn.

Whether you agree or disagree with Tony Kornheiser, his points usually have some intelligence and conscious thought behind them which is unusual for an ESPN guy.

Often, but then there are those times. Like the Monday after the Lions-Cowboys playoff game. Wilbon went off on what a terrible call the PI/not-PI was. Kornheiser, however, said he saw no problem with the game. His reasoning: "The Cowboys at Green Bay is the game I want to see!"

He's everywhere. Interviews,Twitter, local news, tigers games, out west, satellite tours...he's raised UM's profile 1000 times.

I'm starting to get a little uneasy that the hype may be too hard to live up to. We haven't seen a flood of five stars, and right now recruiting is about the only results we have to gauge the Harbaugh effect on until real games are played.

I just hope coach Harbs can equal or exceed Rock Star Harbs, cause sir grump a lot in Lansing, weak chin in Columbus, and the Godfather in Tuscaloosa aren't going anywhere.

To be fair, of course, the flood of five stars likely would not have been an immediate effect anyway, but the foundation is being laid for something along those lines to potentially occur down the road through everything that is happening at present. The most amazing thing to me is that it requires little to no extra effort on the part of Jim Harbaugh - this is him simply being who he is and what he is.

at the right time in his career, when he has worn the edge off of the crazy a little, learned some life lessons, and is eager to settle into a long and happy relationship--perhaps of decades--to close out an illustrious career.

Fans are fickle, and there may be grumbling if we don't demolish all of our gridiron opponents immediately. But there was no better person to come in and right the ship--the whole affair has as much of a savor of destiny as a realist could ever hope for.

I think Harbaugh is a fantastic coach, but some of these programs (OSU, MSU) are running on all cylinders right now.  MSU is starting to attract big-time recruits and OSU just won the fucking national championship!

My hype/hope for Harbaugh is a long term-hype.  Like 5 years worth of recruiting, develpment etc. on a program-wide level.

I would be disappointed in losses to MSU & OSU this year but it would hardly be surprising.
I just want to see Michigan beating the teams they "should" beat this year, and to not be out prepared or out coached.  I think thats a minimum realistic goal, and anything above that is gravy.

I don't mind all the media hype if it helps attract big-time recruits to Michigan; all that means is that the conference, and eventual national championship goals will happen that much sooner.

The only way that Dantonio or Meyer can prove they're as good as Harbaugh would be to go the NFL and compile a far better record than they have in college.

If they stay, they may briefly succeed but they'll always be waiting for their downfall--like when Bo came to UM and started beating Woody.

When Woody started losing to Bo, he had a melt down.

When Urban saw his imminent demise in the SEC, his health broke down and he left.

When Urban started losing in the SEC, his health broke down and he left.  Those are facts.

Yes, he could win for a time.  But he could not keep up with the expectations of sustained success.

The problem he will have at OSU, I think, will be similar.  It's just a matter of time before he starts losing.  Nothing lasts forever. Then, even when he has some successes, they will not be enough to meet expectations.

Yes, a person with a strong character can cope with the bad times and persevere until he succeeds.  But Urban has succeded by lying to people about staying at a program, by giving recruits false hope, and then leaving.

Urban first announced his retirement because of health problems in 2009...when Florida was 12-1 and finished 3rd in the nation. I wouldn't say all of the losing was the problem. Although they lost five games the next year, Florida had the number 1 recruiting class, so the future was still pretty bright. I do agree that his problem at osu will be expectations and sustaining success. My osu friends like to say that Harbaugh will be gone in a few years, but their coach doesn't stay in one place very long and I think you're exactly right regarding urban's inability to handle the expectations.

I agee with you, though.   He still had a good record that year.  Maybe that is why he went back on his word and unretired.  In any case, after gong 8-5 the next year, he did once more go back on word---here, his promise to recruits that he would stay at Fla.  It was a little like the way he misled Weber, except it was he himself, as well as most of his staff and not just his OC that left.

You are right that this has a high risk of happening again.  His brain surgery for an arachnoid cyst--inflamed by stress--often leads to recurrences.  And his stress-related chest pains pose a chronic problem.  He may continue to have success for a while, but he will have trouble keeping up with Harbaugh and his energetic NFL-experienced staff for long.  He probably knows it.

Urban's first OSU team-- that was banned from the postseason for cheating and had many players who were part of that cheating-- would never have won the national title.

Not even close.

1. The team finished #23 in the Sagarin predictor ratings, which best predicts the likelihood of future victories. (In fact, UM finihsed higher at #22)

2. The OSU team that year did not have a loss because

a.  it did not even play in the B1G, title game and

b. because it's schedule was horrendous---the worst in the B1G.

3. Even if it had won the B1G--which it did not--it's chances at getting into a national title game were zero---ND that year was undefeated with a much tougher schedule.  And OSU would never have been selected over a one-loss, defending champ, Ala--which beat ND and repeated as national champ.

How can you say an undefeated major conference team wouldn't have been selected over a 1 loss Alabama team? That would have been unprecedented. OSU was placed at number 3 in the AP poll because they couldn't go to the postseason. Notre Dame and OSU would have played in the national championship game, much to the gnashing of teeth from the SEC.

Moreover, the notion that they wouldn't have won in the Big Ten Championship is absurd, especially if you're basiing it off a computer ranking. They had already beaten Nebraska, who they would have played, 63-38. Wisconsin, who had already lost to OSU too, ended up crushing Nebraska in that game.

Urban's probably the best coach in college football. Luckily, we have someone who can compete with him in every facet of the game.
