ESPN Power Rankings
I just went through the individual votes and most had us between 20 and 24 but I found it extremely interesting that Ivan Maisel had us at 16 and Todd McShay had us at 12! This is a good sign from the senior writer for ESPN CFB and Scout.com. I hope they see the good things to come.

I agree. With convincing wins over Eastern and Indiana in the coming weeks, we should improve our power rankings.

Wins over Eastern and Indiana should be convincing. I doubt winning the next two weeks will help our ranking much. Now losing would be quite detrimental...

Every week, some top 25 teams lose. Accordingly, if we just keep on winning, we're pretty much certain to move up. There will be a lot fewer undefeated teams two weeks from now.

i'm all for the good rankings, but lets not get ahead of ourselves. there is a LOT of football yet to be played.

Agree. I am trying (although it's hard) to not look ahead and start thinking about new year's day bowls, beating OSU, etc. So much could still happen, especially injuries, and you just know that we are headed for some games where things don't click right on side of the ball or the other. For the moment, I'm just trying to soak it up and enjoy the moment, the spotlight and where we are...what a difference a year makes!

While you are certainly correct that there is a lot of football left to be played, half the fun is getting carried away and dreaming of big victories, being part of the B10 Championship race, making to a NYD bowl and of course, beating up on OSU. Now, the players on the other hand, they need to concentrate on EMU and EMU only. Us? Let's dream big.

Let's beat EMU and IU before we start getting carried away. I think we've all seen enough to know that you can't look past any opponent.

Just ask Florida State what they thought of Jacksonville St. prior to Saturday.
Never Forget the HORROR!

we can get carried away? I just really want to get carried away, when its appropriate.
September 15th, 2009 at 4:42 PM ^
I'll let you know when it's the proper time to get carried away.
September 15th, 2009 at 9:47 AM ^
Exactly. And couple of serious injuries and this team will be in trouble quickly.

The best thing about Todd McShay's ranking isn't that we are 12. It is that Ohio State is 4 slots behind us at 16. Hail to the Victors!

The weird one is Rittenberg. He ranks us second(!) in the Big 10 power ranking on his blog right after Penn State, and ahead of OSU, but on the link above, he has Ohio State ranked at 11 and us at 24. Not quite sure what the thought process there is...

He explains that his "power" rankings are fluid and will change from week to week. He is rewarding big wins and punishing losses. Basically, he's saying that M is the 2nd best team in the conference for week 2.

Long season+ young team=stress Let's get thru Eastern.

Personally, I find it considerably less stressful to have a young team than an experienced one. With a senior-led team, there's a sense of urgency to capitalize. When you have a freshman QB, losing a game isn't the end of the world.

We have no idea how this team will play when they don't have the Big House on their side. I'm holding my breath. When and if they win convincingly at Iowa, then I might start thinking Penn State. But I still remember the Toledo game last year - I was there, dumbstruck - so I take nothing for granted.

to contain ourselves after such a promising start to a season that many of us were skeptical about heading in. Even the most optimistic Wolverine fan would only go out on the limb of 7-5 or 8-4 at the very high end. After their performances and the emergence of Forcier it is very difficult to quell expectations much higher than 7-5. However, Wendy's post brings up a great point that we do not know anything about this young team outside of the Big House. Would we have beaten Notre Dame in South Bend? Would Forcier have kept his cool as much on the road? Those are questions that are left to be answered, some of them will be on October 3rd when we face a presumably hostile crowd in East Lansing. It is great to see people with respectable opinions like McShay ranking us as high as #12 in his power ranking but I have always tried to take the same approach as the football team which would be to enjoy the victory for 24 hours and then get focused back on our opponent for the coming week. A major letdown and total debacle against EMU would send us fans right back into depression mode.
