ESPN Open Thread: Heisman Trophy followed by 30 for 30 "You Don't Know Bo"
The dude from ND is a great media story. That is all.
I saw Dat Nyguen's numbers from his sr. Yr and they were great. No Heisman hype. Are there LB's this yr w numbers comparable to T'eo?
Why does that Notre Dame player have a bunch of leaves around his neck? It makes him look like he's on marijuana.
Well you don't see Johnny Manziel in a damn ten gallon hat. Maybe he should be wearing one of those skirts then too if he really wanted to "honor" his state or what have you.
Is this guy for real or is he just an elaborate shit-boomer troll?
elaborate shit-boomer troll is my guess. Something similar to wolverineinabag/rdt. Someone who obviously has way too much free time on his/her hands.
Could the Heisman Curse cause Notre Dame to lose to Alabama in the National Championship Game?
Pretty sure with or without the Heisman Curse, ND will probably lose to Bama.
Yeah, I'm not sure either one will rate a big thread. Figured together we could save some board clutter. And they are both college football related.
Te'o was set up to be given the Heisman this year. He's had every award given to him, plus one, that Charles Wooodson had the year he won the Heisman. If Te'o doesn't win it I will be shocked.
What a bloody sham.
He should be the clear winner. He broke the SEC record for total offense in a season. The guy who held the record before him won the Heisman. If Te'o had taken a couple of his picks to the house I could've maybe agreed a little more with his candidacy.
Woodson will always be the one and only on defense to ever win the heisman.
Wisconsin down 8 to Marquette. Over 2 minutes left.
He's electric. He set a SEC record. Crazy good.
Te'o is a big, tough dude but no records and simply ND hype.
ND hype. Exactly why he has a legit chance to win.
Colin Klein would be winning this if he didn't blow it against Baylor. That being said, he's a great football player, and I hope he leads K-State to an upset over Oregon. Klein won't win tonight, but he deserves to be there.
I respect the hell out of Manti T'eo. He's got some of the best linebacker instincts of anyone who plays that position right now, and I have a feeling that he will translate very well into the NFL. But I can't bring myself to endorse him for the award for two reasons: 1) I hate Notre Dame, and 2) For a defensive guy to win, I think he needs to find multiple ways to get the ball in his hands, a la Charles Woodson. T'eo is a playmaker, but he's not as versatile as Woodson was, and I think Woodson set the standard for any defensive player that had any hope to win the Heisman. T'eo is one of the best football players in college football right now, but I hope I live long enough to never see another defensive player win the Heisman other than Woodson.
Here's to you, Johnny Football.
I know what you meant but to say you want to live long enough to see something never happen seems strange. If you died in the next half hour and teo won you'd still get your wish...
Well if you really want to get technical about it.....
Johnny Football please. So sick of the ND crap.
After last bowl season.
I hate this song. I really hate it. And yet ESPN insists on playing it every commercial break. Rather listen to Pitbull at this point.
Playing Jump Around as they beat them by 10.
So much for the B1G being deep and loaded this year. Looks like Indiana, Ohio and Michigan are going to have to carry the conference this year.
We have Illinois at Gonzaga later tonight.
Minnesota is pretty damn good and MSU / Illinois will both be in the tourney with decent seeds.
Hold on. Wisconsin wasn't supposed to be nearly as good this year as usual, particularly after John Gasser was lost for the season. Bo Ryan may still squeeze a tourney bid out of them, but they're not a standard-bearer for the league or anything.
I hope Lee Corso retires after this season. This is getting painful to watch.
ESPN is bugging the hell out of me, while trying to hype this Heisman show, all of the sudden Woodson wasn't a priimarily defensive player they're trying to convince us, really?
Sir Charles played 90% on defense, he had some punt returns and played a few plays on offense, quit trying to make it sound like Te'o would be the 1st defensive player, FU espn assholes
Not watching, so I don't what they're saying exactly. But if Teo wins, he would be the 1st Defense-Only player to win it
Oh my, Desmond Howard... telling Te'o how "cute" his necklace is. Subtly asserting his Alpha male status over the young bucks.
He is the Herm of the Heisman telecast.
So what are your memories of the Terry Baker season, Herm?
Sparty is a dick.
Why does nobody point out the fact that Manziel is not really even a freshman? He is a sophmore in college who happens to have the eligibility of a freshman, totally different accomplishment if he wins vs. a true freshman winning IMO. Him winning this year is really not any different then Tebow winning as a true sophmore.
Maybe, but no one even knew he'd win the starting job. Truthfully, this is closer to a Denard scenario than Tebow... Tebow had snaps his frosh year, Manziel didn't IIRC. Tebow was designated starter. Sure, Manziel isn't a 17-18 y/o, but this was his first year..and in the SEC.
I'm not saying that Manziel hasn't been impressive. I'm just saying it is somewhat disingenuous and annoying that the media is hyping him as the first freshman ever to win without mentioning that he is actually a RS Freshman.
Guh. Double post.
It's not the same thing. Tebow had prior college game experience the year he won. Manziel did not.
Sick of the parsing of roles. Charles is the first and greatest defensive player to win the Heisman..
Perhaps Te'o is exclusive to D because he can't contribute to O like Charles ...
Manziel for Heisman.
I nominate Herm for president of the Interwebz.
Just because at least he wore a tie with his team colors.
OMGZ WOODSON SIGHTING ON THE HEISMAN HOUSE FEATURE.
Cue the ND ass kissing fest.
Does Te'o remind anyone else of that Oscar the Grouch character from Seasame Street?
This has to be the first time that no nominies are running backs. There was a period where 10 straight winners were RBs. In the last 6 years there was one running back. Now not even a nominee. It seems to be a position in decline.
With the new spread systems, everything goes through the QB and they get mind boggling numbers.
Are playing QB now.
Denard and... who else are you refering to?
RG3, Cam Newton, Tim Tebow, and probably Troy Smith all would have been running backs, maybe a tight end, and slot receiver back twenty years ago, no more 30 when running backs were winning the Heisman every year. No one was putting your best athlete at quarterback in those days. Bo Jackson would probably be a quarterback today.
So, yeah, really.
QB, TE (6-6 250 lbs RB?), LOL, and QB.
RB requires side to side agility, where Cammy Cam, and RG3 are more straight-line runners. And Tebow... would have been a FB? maybe a Wisconsin RB. Troy Smith never had great rushing stats and I can't remember if he had great agility.
Not saying they'd have all been great pros as running backs, receivers, or tight ends. Just that none of them would have been playing quarterback. And they wouldn't have. No coach would have put someone whose primary gift is running at quarterback back in those days. Not unless you were running the wishbone. Newton would never have taken a snap starting in pee wee. Hell, at his size he might have been a defensive end. But not a quarterback.
The Raiders made hay on guys in all sorts of positions who could run fast but didn't have a lot of wiggle. Tebow probably was a fullback/h-back. Troy Smith wasn't getting a shot at quarterback in 1980. There's a reason you didn't have hardly any black quarterbacks. It wasn't because they suddenly figured out how to throw in the year 2000. They were finally given the opportunity rather than getting shuffled to other positions.
I wasn't watching football back then. Still, guys like Adrian Peterson are RBs and not QBs, even for the spread.
On a side note, am I the only one bothered when annoucer's mention Cam Newton "leaving" Florida (or Mettenberger "leaving" UGA) without the words "kicked off the team?" These guys screwed up pretty bad in each case and the media turns its head. Damn SEC...
I got the feeling that you thought I was saying that they weren't "real quarterbacks." And I think the first two are doing a good job proving they are QBs in the NFL. Tebow was never a quarterback.
But you'd have a hard time naming those guys equivalent matches in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. 90's to some extent too. Not because no athletes like that existed. They just weren't playing QB.
And the media always glosses over the cheating and dirty; unless they're specifically trying to make a point about dirty cheating. And yeah, it sucks.
Bo Jackson would probably be a RB today too. C'mon man, it's Bo Jackon. He's a freak. Besides, throwing a baseball isn't the same as running an offense
Heck, as well as Tebow?
You'd want the ball in his hands every play, and he's be playing for Auburn at quarterback. Or Meyer's Florida, or heck, Rich Rod.
With those few coordinators/coaches, then I'm sure he'd get a shot at QB. But it's Bo Jackson, not the typical All-American RB.
But there were exceptional ones who could have been but never got the chance. I bet Payton would be a full time QB today. (he was actually a depth QB and punter as well as running back).
No Wide Recievers either.
Probably has more to do with the rise of the spread and a greater focus on the quarterback in the offense.
I have to imagine that passing yards plus rushing yards for QB's has been much greater than it ever has in the past.
And with the fact that only three guys were invited to New York.
Marqise Lee should have been, but Heisman voters looked at USC's defense and decided that he didn't really have that great a season.
Either George Rogers is now a pimp, or they're re-shooting Dick Tracy.
That has gotta be one of the worst suits ever worn on that stage!
Johnny football takes it!
Johnny Fucking Football.
They got it right this year!
Yes! I like Johnny Manziel and A&M. That woman is annoyed me.
Has got to be liking their move to the SEC about now.
Woodson's reaction to STILL being the only defensive player.
Charles Woodson forever.
Johnny Fucking Football, baby! Yesss...
Johnny Football!! Kid is amazing. Can't wait to see what he does next year.
Notice how they tried discredit that fact during the show? Saying "pure" defender in reference to Teo.
ESPN is excrement.
Chuck Woodson was the purest defender I've ever seen. He didn't beat Manning because he returned one punt for a TD or caught a few passes. Chuck Woodson shut down half the field. He was the man.
Not left, ever.
After next year.
If Brax keeps progressing the way he does in Urban Meyer's offense, I don't see how he doesn't win a Heisman.
I dunno, if they lose 1 game he wouldn't be in the Heisman talk. Did he even finish in the top 50 in passer efficiency? Going into the UM game, he was not.
40 years ago, Freshmen weren't allowed to play college ball.
Now, one has just won the Heisman.
except that he would've been allowed to play 40 years ago...
Freshmen received varsity eligibly in 1973.
He is a redshirt freshman, meaning he has been on campus for two years. Meaning he would have been able to play varsity 40 years ago.
He is a RS Freshman, not a true freshman, so he would have been able to play.
He's a redshirt freshman, not a true freshman.
And he is 20 years old. Tebow was 20 also when he won.
Hey guys he's a redshirt freshman
So, you know, he could have played. Nobody else thought of that?
Congrats Mr. Football.
Herm, let's go celebrate. What bar in bay city you at ?
And now the better television starts. Hopefully this Bo Jackson special lives up to the legend.
Didn't seem like many past winners were there. Usually double that show up. That's one of my favorite parts.
Bo Jackson, who was named the Sugar Bowl MVP, said it was one of the toughest teams he ever faced, calling the U-M players "like little bees always coming at you."
I thought I ruined my laptop when I spit out beer laughing at this comment. Thankfully I didn't.
Good for Manziel. A weird college football season, but he basically won the same way Tebow did - have a couple of memorable games while emerging during a season in which no dominant storyline emerges. Good for him, and should be interesting to see how this affects player promotion going forward.
The Tecmo legend is covered.
Congrats to John Football and Coach Sumlin. However, yell leaders and are still weird and the lyrics to the aggie war hymn are lame.
...but I still think Herschel Walker was the better pure athlete.
Did anyone actually watch the Bo show?
Skimmed the thread and looks like all the posts save 1 are about the Heisman (yawn)
I thought it was really good.... other than the ocassional cheesy cartoon interludes (eh, guess they had some amusement value....) and too much Chuck Klosterman (why was he included??) it was a really good 30 for 30. Bo's a cool dude. I loved the stuff about his personal life and how he's a hunter, it was interesting.
brought back some great memories about a too often forgotten phenomenal athlete.
I had completely forgotten about the throw he made from the warning track to home plate in Seattle. Un f'ing believable.
I will always love Bo Jackson for being self deprecating, for really enjoying playing sports, and for running right over Boz and Prime Time. I will also always love that dude for his epic Barry Sanders quote: "Barry is my new idol, now. I love the way the guy runs. When I grow up I want to run just like him."
