This has to be the first time that no nominies are running backs. There was a period where 10 straight winners were RBs. In the last 6 years there was one running back. Now not even a nominee. It seems to be a position in decline.
...just one man's opinion.
With the new spread systems, everything goes through the QB and they get mind boggling numbers.
Are playing QB now.
"I love him, he's a great coach, he's a great mentor, he's a great friend. He's every single thing you want a college coach to be, and he does it flawlessly." -David Molk
RG3, Cam Newton, Tim Tebow, and probably Troy Smith all would have been running backs, maybe a tight end, and slot receiver back twenty years ago, no more 30 when running backs were winning the Heisman every year. No one was putting your best athlete at quarterback in those days. Bo Jackson would probably be a quarterback today.
So, yeah, really.

QB, TE (6-6 250 lbs RB?), LOL, and QB.
RB requires side to side agility, where Cammy Cam, and RG3 are more straight-line runners. And Tebow... would have been a FB? maybe a Wisconsin RB. Troy Smith never had great rushing stats and I can't remember if he had great agility.
Not saying they'd have all been great pros as running backs, receivers, or tight ends. Just that none of them would have been playing quarterback. And they wouldn't have. No coach would have put someone whose primary gift is running at quarterback back in those days. Not unless you were running the wishbone. Newton would never have taken a snap starting in pee wee. Hell, at his size he might have been a defensive end. But not a quarterback.
The Raiders made hay on guys in all sorts of positions who could run fast but didn't have a lot of wiggle. Tebow probably was a fullback/h-back. Troy Smith wasn't getting a shot at quarterback in 1980. There's a reason you didn't have hardly any black quarterbacks. It wasn't because they suddenly figured out how to throw in the year 2000. They were finally given the opportunity rather than getting shuffled to other positions.

I wasn't watching football back then. Still, guys like Adrian Peterson are RBs and not QBs, even for the spread.
On a side note, am I the only one bothered when annoucer's mention Cam Newton "leaving" Florida (or Mettenberger "leaving" UGA) without the words "kicked off the team?" These guys screwed up pretty bad in each case and the media turns its head. Damn SEC...
I got the feeling that you thought I was saying that they weren't "real quarterbacks." And I think the first two are doing a good job proving they are QBs in the NFL. Tebow was never a quarterback.
But you'd have a hard time naming those guys equivalent matches in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. 90's to some extent too. Not because no athletes like that existed. They just weren't playing QB.
And the media always glosses over the cheating and dirty; unless they're specifically trying to make a point about dirty cheating. And yeah, it sucks.
"I love him, he's a great coach, he's a great mentor, he's a great friend. He's every single thing you want a college coach to be, and he does it flawlessly." -David Molk
Bo Jackson would probably be a RB today too. C'mon man, it's Bo Jackon. He's a freak. Besides, throwing a baseball isn't the same as running an offense
Heck, as well as Tebow?
You'd want the ball in his hands every play, and he's be playing for Auburn at quarterback. Or Meyer's Florida, or heck, Rich Rod.

With those few coordinators/coaches, then I'm sure he'd get a shot at QB. But it's Bo Jackson, not the typical All-American RB.
But there were exceptional ones who could have been but never got the chance. I bet Payton would be a full time QB today. (he was actually a depth QB and punter as well as running back).

No Wide Recievers either.
Probably has more to do with the rise of the spread and a greater focus on the quarterback in the offense.
I have to imagine that passing yards plus rushing yards for QB's has been much greater than it ever has in the past.

And with the fact that only three guys were invited to New York.
Either George Rogers is now a pimp, or they're re-shooting Dick Tracy.

It's been a lot. Its been a roller coaster that for some reason seemed like it would never get good. But you know what? We kept fighting. It's like that old saying goes, "Those Who Stay Will Be Champions." -David Molk
Yes! I like Johnny Manziel and A&M. That woman is annoyed me.

Johnny Football!! Kid is amazing. Can't wait to see what he does next year.

Notice how they tried discredit that fact during the show? Saying "pure" defender in reference to Teo.

ESPN is excrement.
Chuck Woodson was the purest defender I've ever seen. He didn't beat Manning because he returned one punt for a TD or caught a few passes. Chuck Woodson shut down half the field. He was the man.

Manziel wins it!!! You nervous OSU? This kid has 3 more years. Its time for a new two time winner. Congrats to Johnny Manziel!

If Brax keeps progressing the way he does in Urban Meyer's offense, I don't see how he doesn't win a Heisman.
40 years ago, Freshmen weren't allowed to play college ball.
Now, one has just won the Heisman.
Wow.

He is a redshirt freshman, meaning he has been on campus for two years. Meaning he would have been able to play varsity 40 years ago.

He is a RS Freshman, not a true freshman, so he would have been able to play.
He's a redshirt freshman, not a true freshman.
And he is 20 years old. Tebow was 20 also when he won.
