I jumped on a similar deal a month and a half ago, and they are serious that it takes 4-6 weeks to activate ESPN Insider. The delay is in how long it takes your subscription to start, which I believe is typically the next month at least.
Pro tip: When activating Insider, it will ask you for a credit card number. This surprised me because it is free, but they do not charge you.

yeah, what happens is they send the magazine like a month or two after you sign up - and there's a number on the front that first starts with like ESP or something and looks something like this "ESP - 852987234"...then you log into ESPN with your username (if you have one) or you create one....then you click "activate insider"...it will give you option to buy it but at the very bottom there's an active insider if you've already purchased the magazine...you click that...put in the code and follow the steps.
