ESPN FPI Team Efficiencies Update, Wk. 9

Submitted by Ecky Pting on

The updated FPI team efficiency ratings have been posted and Michigan, and at the risk of sounding repetitve, Michigan is still at the #1 position for the second week in a row. Meanwhile, OSU continues to slide, dropping from #5 to #6 overall after demonstrating that their issues apply just as much at home as they do on the road. The U-M splits are offense, #5 (up from #6); defense, #2 (same as last 2 weeks); and special teams drops to #16, down from #14 despite going 3/3 on field goals and returning 2-PAT 90+ yards. S/T seems very volatile, but I think it's only 1/6 of the overall, so whatever...

Of U-M's 2016 opponents, Colorado - now at #9, down from #8 - still remains the highest rated team U-M will have faced before meeting OSU in November. The cardiac kids of Wisconsin is two spots behind Colorado at #11 (up from #12 after squeaking by Nebraska). The already vanquished UCF remains rated above 5 of Michigan's other opponents this season, including Sparty, of course. Still registering a pulse after being left for dead like so much roadkill, Sparty shot up to #83, passing Central and Eastern to claim the title of Third Best Team in the State of Michigan. Hey - it's as step up from the Participation Award Sparty was looking forward to last week. Meanwhile Western, still holding at #11, continues to lurk about as dark-horse Group of Five entrant.

Here's the selectively abbreviated synopsis of the ratings. Click the link above to see the whole list &/or sort by category:

Despite a bit of a backslide in the run defense, the D acquitted itself nicely. 7 stops in the "and goal" and a sack on a 4th down shouldn't be overlooked. Opposing BIG offenses have been fuckt, and that's the fack.

I was kind of curious as to how that 66.9 rating on special teams compared to the rest of FBS and I would still take 16th overall. Interesting to see Memphis, of all teams, at #1 on that particular metric despite being #52 overall. Another small example of what having a relatively complete team - as the broadcast crew talked a bit about yesterday - can do for you.
