The end of "Ohio"?

Submitted by Section 1 on

Okay, I'll be that guy...

Is this the end of "Ohio" and "Beat Ohio"?

I suspect not, at least from the football program officialdom.  They've drawn that line; I don't really expect them to back down.

But for common usage among fans?  The ones that don't happen to be going to a Brady Hoke luncheon speech that day?  What will any fan-on-the-street be thinking, when saying "Beat Ohio!"  Will it be, "D'oh!  That first-round tourney loss to a 13-seed?"

Is this the trashtalk-equivalent of Appalachian State?  How long before Beilein and Brandon get a rematch with The Ohio University Bobcats?

you sure go to great lengths to take cheap shots at Hoke whenever you can.

This post was completely unnecessary. We all know the real reason you brought it up.

Yes, OU has obviously won the respect of the nation and now OSU fans will chant O-H-I-O-S-T-A-T-E as well. They can poke a little fun now but tomorrow this means nothing.

End it. Immediately. Stop it. It has absolutely no place in Michigan athletics amymore. I will literally cringe when I hear Hoke say it now. Its hypocritical for us to use. Our basketball team blew it, plain and simple. If we lost to them in baseball, softball, soccer, etc..I would say the same thing. Clearly Hoke does it as a rib on osu, to call them inferior, like Ohio is in terms of sports and Universit stature in the state. That is not the case any longer as the tiny MAC school knocked us squarely on our asses . Who gives a shit if their script reads 'O H I O'. That has NOTHING to do with why Hoke calls them that. It is supposed to give them an inferior complex, that is no longer relevant.

Posts like this would be exploded rather than -1000 if I was. It was a nasty night, and people were being jackasses about the loss. They can't ban everyone. But it's not like such stuff should go without recrimination. And frankly, it was too stupid to have a "debate" over.

My senior year at UM. We barely beat Akron State (coached by Bob Huggins) and then got beat by Johnny Orr (former UM coach) and Iowa State.

The '86 team was far more talented than our current co-champs.

The Bobcats had their one day in the sun and won't be going any further.

I'm self-medicating with Guinness this evening but still proud that the team broke a 25+ year string of no B1G titles.

In answer to the op's question from Jim Trott: yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, No!

Fans are emulating a coach they admire and have great confidence in. The loss tonight does not affect that.

Shouldn't fans question their coach when he says something that is just nonsensical? And when the embodiment of that nonsense causes pain to the A.D. that employs that coach? I'm not questioning Hoke's ability to recruit, call plays, etc; I am questioning his....hard to say- not "class," but, I don't know, "style," perhaps?  (only if he keeps it up for entire tenure of glory). It's just....low brow. We just lost, in a revenue sport, to the team that he was inherently insulting every time he said/says "Ohio," by marginalizing the shit out of them: they only exist to be the subject of ridicule because we, by calling tOSU 'Ohio,' don't recognize a difference. I mean, seriously: if tOSU called us all "Spartans," . . . to say panties would be in a bunch would be an understatement.

That was made by Brady Hoke, the FOOTBALL coach.

If any ohio fan wants to bring up Michigan losing this game to ohio university, I'll just show them a picture of the scoreboard from The Game this past season.

Which didn't impact Ohio in any way, shape, or form...

Unless you're talking about OSU, in which case I would NEVER show a scoreboard picture to their fans because they have 9 more to counter my 1.  I'd just leave that alone, personally.

Although I vigorously defend the OP, and think people who don't realize that the whole "Ohio" thing was/is nothing for any self-respecting grown man to stoop to, generally, and that it was, at best, tolerable because Hoke is  "ours" and we're winning, I also couldn't support your post more; OSU fans who talk to me about the last 10 years are the worst. "Gentlemen. Football did not begin in 2001. I know, I know- you forgot. But no, seriously: we can even just talk about the 1990's, though I'd prefer everything after 1900 when it comes to you tools."

Out of everything I have ever seen you post here (which I would consider a lot) I believe this is the first time I have to disagree with you. Maybe I just don't see the "Ohio" thing the way others (seemingly including you) do, but I don't see it as Hoke comparing Ohio State to a MAC school with Ohio University's standing in-state.

Personally, I believe that Hoke finds it funny that they market themselves in a way that can only be construed as "we call ourselves Ohio but it's an insult when someone wearing maize does it" and that they're sensitive about "State" being included. Ohio University beat us today, no denying that (or the irony involved), but I believe they have very little to do with Hoke's choice of names for our archrival.

Again, much admiration for your posts, I think you know you'll find a +1 from me no matter what, I just think you're wrong about the issue.

I don't disagree with any of your statements, really. I'd blockquote you, but it seems unnecessary. To me, though, if you're comparing a school, one that (for better or worse), the people that actually attended have a lot of pride in (for multiple reasons; listen, that school, academically, doesn't stack up to U of M....but they've gotten a TON better since I've been talking shit about them, which is like 15 years or so) to a school, another school that alums have pride in (and for the record, everyone I've ever met that went to Ohio U was a.) socially normal, b.) liked to have a good time, c.) also disliked ohio state, and d.) see b.) . . well, it's a slap by omission, in a way. Now, it's easily explainable if I'm B. Hoke and a coach asks me about it: "I'm from Ohio. I grew up there. All of my best friends I grew up with rooted for OSU, went to Ohio colleges, their kids do, they live there. For me, OSU, Ohio U, Bowling Green, Miami, they're all the same: Ohio. I'm from there: I want to beat the hell out of all of them. Now, that team in Columbus is the most important; not a day goes by I don't think about how to beat 'em. But to me, it's all Ohio, and it's all the same."

Well, if your point was like that quote (which I think it was; I just don't think that was BH's original intent with it) then I agree.

I don't believe Hoke calling them Ohio has much to do with other colleges in Ohio, and really, that's my point. Given the traditions and culture surrounding Ohio State, it seems reasonable to call them "Ohio". The fact that this bothers them is humorous to some (including Hoke, it seems). My point is that unless you're talking about some deep-seeded cultural reference, it doesn't matter whether or not there is a school called Ohio University. Maybe that exists, but it's not something I'm familiar with.

In other words, I don't think offense is intended towards Ohio University students/fans/alums. Those people might be "slap[ped] by omission", but I hardly think that's the intent here. I believe the intent has to do with the Ohio State tradition revolving around the word "Ohio" while simultaneously rejecting the same word.

Who was "that guy"? No one made the claim you're responding to. The OP is about how ridiculous it is to insult one team/school (OSU) by calling them by the name of another school that just embarassed us (Ohio). No one is making a link between Brady Hoke referring to OSU (which is still alive in this tournament, and a top seed at that) as "Ohio" and us losing to the actual "Ohio" tonight....except you.
