The end of an idea.

I'm not sure where to start. Maybe it's, "Hi, my name is Todd and I am a Michigan-aholic?"

I am in mourning today. Not for the coaches or the players (maybe a little for Brock Mealer who may be the real loser in all of this), but for the idea of a new dynamic direction Michigan lacked for some time the day Rich Rodriguez stepped onto campus toting a big-time offense.

I found mgoblog after Carr retired. Quickly becoming a daily (sometimes hourly) reader of the blog as the readership speculated and squirmed during the failure of a coaching search played out. I'll never forget the day I found out Rich Rod was coming. I was out shopping for my wife for Christmas, mad about the lack of parking spaces, the number of people shopping at the same time and more so hating the daily speculation of subpar coaches turning down the job when they should be begging to coach at Michigan. Things seemed to be getting pretty desperate.

During my fruitless wandering, I would check my phone from time to time for updates when Brian broke the news of a coach with mutual interest and a successful track record. It’s sad to say this out loud; my mood changed immediately like the scrooge waking up on Christmas morning. I was happy and excited; thankful we waited for a national championship caliber coach. As many did, I pondered what kind of success he would have working with Michigan caliber talent at better facilities.

Days, weeks and months later we learned what coaches were coming and who was not. Many of us poured over the resumes of those assistant coaches and found the strength and conditioning coach who - with a raspy voice and a cage of wild wolves scared and delighted us both. With a mix of wizardry and snake oil, we were on our way.

The first year was filled with disappointment, but in my mind a necessary process in order to right the ship of the old three yards and a cloud of dust mindsets and traditionalist ways. Besides, the talent pool was depleted. The coaches just needed time. Add in public fight between WVU and Rich on a buyout lawsuit. Needless to say, we were all ready for some good news which signing day provided. We already had a San Diego kid who was polished and ready, the biggest recruit in Michigan, plus this unknown guy named Denard who was fast and didn't tie his shoelaces.

Year two was something of fascination. A moxie filled freshman was leading Michigan to big wins in the beginning, only to get nicked up as losses mounted in the B10. A kids shoelaces flopping in the wind as he hit mock 1 headed into the end zone. It was amazing to watch as it was tough to watch sometimes. However, everyone saw a glimpse of what could be starting to take shape. There was a lot to be excited about. On the flip side, another controversy swelled with outside allegations from a local paper and a full blown NCAA investigation underway. Oh yeah, and some bad investment scheme Rich got into.

This year? Well, the expectations were higher and we all know what happened from there. Someone convinced me we had to go another way because it was time for a man from Michigan to come home. After watching a colossal beat down of VT, I was ready for the move only if it was "this guy."

Now, Dave Brandon tells us Rich wasn't good enough and Jim is acting like we aren't big enough. So; I sit here looking like my dog just died. For me, the dismissal of Rich was also the death of an idea conceived three years prior of a new direction in the program and the rise back to national supremacy once again.

Don’t get me wrong; while I am a supporter of the offense of system Rich brought to Michigan, the facts say Dave Brandon had little choice but to make a change. In a selfish way, i was looking forward to seeing the team get better; placing Michigan back on the mountain top of Michigan football - not looking at the possibility of 2-3 years of additional change where the team may get back to where 9-10 wins is considered good enough or where domination by PAC 10 and SEC teams that get explained away due to academic standards.

In the end, I was excited for the next generation of Michigan football to start 3 years ago. Now we'll never truly know if the foundation of the program would have been successful under Rich. It feels like we are stuck in the mud waiting for another coaching search that may require the implementation of another system, a handful of player transfers and a recruiting class that falls apart all together. Are we in for another 3 years of turmoil only to run the coach out of town for not doing well enough again? Time will tell. Dave Brandon's legacy will be written by what happens next. Will he continue what Rich started or look to revert back to the Michigan of old? I hope not the latter. Can you envision a team next year without Denard?

I wasn't gonna say anything about this but here's my feeling (not that they matter) I am younger only 19 so i may not know as much as other posters. what I do think I know is 1) we fired a young coach who proved he could and showed some promise but was still learning how to coach at a big school. He was caught with some bad luck in all the transfers and injuries so the bad losses are not completely his blame. a conn to what rich rod did was not make it work with mallet, I think good coaches should work their system around their good players but that was part of his learning.
2) Everyone is now begging for a guy who is showing no loyalty to Michigan and is acting like the biggest arrogant ass hole there is in the coaching world. at this point I would rather bring in miles because harbaugh is throwing the $$ around in michigans face and won't come out and say he's in it for Michigan or not. he's being a little petty if he's upset he didn't get the qb coach job whatever year it was.
3) DB is an idiot for waiting for so long because if he fires rich Rod which we knew was coming he could have asked harbaugh if he wanted the job or not and if not we get al golden or will muschamp two coaches I believe will be great. now DB is caught with his dick in his hand and looks desperate and almost like he has to beg for harbaugh and Jim is eating that shit up. I know I'm young and not very credible but these are my thoughts take them for what they are worth.

1. Miles is a very good option, certainly the least risky

2. Fitz is an excellent #2 choice (I always thought he would get a hard look to replace JoePa when he retired, but apparently JoePa never is going to do that)

3. Brandon made a very reasonable decision to wait until he could get a solid answer from JH before moving on; it cost us a month (and, yes, the accurate term to use is "cost"), but the cost was worth the chance we might be able to reel him in if we waited until after the Orange Bowl

4. Dave Brandon did an excellent job at the press conference yesterday; everyone outside the UM community and most everyone I have talked to within the community were impressed, but for whatever reason (maybe lack of sleep and/or blind rage that a new coach was not announced yesterday), the powers that be on MGoBlog see it differently

Can we please stop talking about Miles?

He is NOT a good option.

Obviously not a good game day coach. Anyone that can't learn to manage the clock obviously has some issues. The way he has handled the QB situation at LSU is just terrible.

Aside from that, there are still plenty of people around that remember him costing us Gary Moeller because he couldn't keep his dick in his pants. Add to that the rumors he spread to recruits about Lloyd having Parkinsons, and he is a non starter. There is a reason Bill Martin didn't return his phone calls last time. If you think the boosters were pissed about RR, you have no idea the shit storm that happen if Miles got the job. Enough of them love Lloyd that they would simply stop donating if Miles walked through the door.

I understand the wake lasts for several days, and it should. But we're extended family, not the next of kin

It's been a tough 3 years, but that also means we should be better at handling it. Lock down, Sack up - the all clear didn't sound in 2010

I am not sure why I see all of these reports such as this http://michigan.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1173087) that Harbaugh is set to be the highest paid coach in the NFL. Granted he did some great work at USD and then at Standford but is he really qualified to be paid better than Bill Belichcik? I think Harbaugh is setting himself up for tremendous failure, albeit a very rich failure!

I admit to limited perceptive powers. But I fail to see how DB has become the bête noire in this ongoing daytime drama entitled “As the M Coaching Staff Turns.”

DB has thought the coaching situation through. Early last fall during the NCAA business DB let the world know he was not wedded to RR: “He is our coach for this season,” or some such. He (presumably) let RR know it was his job to keep or lose depending on the product he put on the field. DB waited until after the Gator Bowl meltdown, which coincidentally meshed with a buyout reduction, and, true to his promise, made his decision. That he had no Harbaugh or anyone else waiting in the wings was because 1) he in fact did not finally make the final decision until (probably) Tuesday night, and 2) circumstances well beyond his control. Before the presser, DB could not simply get on his BlackBerry and call Jim, or Dennis, or Brady or whoever and invite them to coach in AA. The world, and especially this situation, is far more complicated than that.

Among other things, DB weighed 1) after three complete seasons, the realistic possibility of significant on-field improvement were RR retained; 2) the effect on current players and recruits of postponing his fire/retain decision until a month before Signing Day; 3) the prospect of landing the coach of his choice within, say, 2 weeks of that decision. And in this DB had IMO three goals: to treat RR fairly, to hold on to as many of the current roster and recruits as possible, and bring in the best available coach. DB has accomplished the first goal. He’s working very hard to accomplish the second and seems at least in part to be succeeding. We should know shortly if he accomplishes the third. DB is a Man with a Plan.
