Did anyone else hear what happened at the end of the game exactly? I turned on the Hoke postgame interview via the radio and caught the tail end of the discussion. Apparently they said Taylor Lewan was very pissed and upset.
End of game taunting incident
The hit that knocked robinson out was bush league. If we ever beat OSU like this, I hope we see some of our players taken out of the game and hole chew then up in the locker room.
I expect Lewan to remember this next year. We've heard about his mean streak, next year I'd love to see what he does in response.
It doesn't involve playing as badly as he did today. When he got beat by a three man rush, all I could do was curse ALOT.
sure if you watched the game, but MSU was blitzing almost every play. I don't even remember them bringing only 3 on any play.
It happened late, while we were driving down 28-14 I think.
Was this after or before he was injured by cheap shots?
play. I don't see how one play on a three man rush, equates to Lewan having a terrible day though. The reason the o-line looked overwhelmed most of the day is because of the blitzes and the fact that Borges was doing nothing from a playcalling standpoint to exploit or combat them. Honestly, I really don't blame the players for what happened in this game, offensively. Borges and his playcalling put them in a bad spot. Most of the blame should be put squarely on Borges.
Really? You honestly don't blame the players? And yes, Lewan and Schofield took a double team to a defensive lineman and he just split right through them for the sack (fourth quarter).
- Denard overthrew half his passes or was late. Some was pressure, some were him just overthrowing the ball.
- The offensive line weren't picking up the linebackers well on blitzes and let their linemen dominate us. No running game at all.
- Our defensive line was god awful, no push at all until the fourth quarter against a supposed horrible offensive line. Ends consistently let the running backs outside
- Our linebacking corps was non-existent.
- Defense as a whole weren't tackling well and gave up the extra two or three yards by not finishing and letting them fall forward or not wrapping them up. Gave up a touchdown instead of just a field goal by Floyd whiffing on a tackle.
- Our secondary weren't horrible, but they definitely weren't about 'average'.
So you really think that our players aren't to blame? Borges shold be blamed for a lot, I never liked the hire to begin with and only one week I actually thought that he might be okay (Minnesota with lots of looks). I think Mattison did fine, just the players didn't perform.
There was one play where they brought 3, I think it was the one that brought Gardner in on the final drive. The DE did a spin move on Lewan and he was gone. It was really bad.
I think he expected Schofield to pick that up or help.
That probably is true, still when it is 3 against 5 you think your o-line should be able to handle that and give the QB some time.

Spartans actually sacked Denad with a 3 vs 5 rush.
Borges saw the blitzes from up top. He should've called more screen and quick slant passes. Or, you know, QB runs, since that got us most of our first downs.
ALOOOT of taunting after every play from the opening kickoff, lots of after the whistle fighting, and a few cheap shots. They won the game, but they disgraced themselves and the state of Michigan in the process.
Upload video? Way cool! I can't even upload a fucking picture to my account here.
On a youtube video click "share", then click "embed" and copy the highlighted text, then open a comment window and click the line underneath that reads "Switch to plain text editor." Next, click inside the comment box and hit "Paste", a box should open indicating your video, click the box, then switch back to "rich text editor" and click "Save." I usually need to reload the page in order to see the clip after saving. For photos Copy and Paste seems to work
pointed the ball at Denard as he was returning the Pick 6.
To the winners go the spoils. Fine. If that's the way they wish to carry themselves, well, that's more of a damning statement about them than anything else.
BUT KNOW THIS.....Michigan State has an ass-whipping headed their way next season in Ann Arbor. That old lady named Karma is a real bitch, and a vindictive one at that.
Karma goes by another name, Wisconsin.
I'm trying to remember when Lamarr threw a punch.
One of those was a penalty. Woodleys hit was not a late shot. Keep trying Sparty
from being able to compete with MSU, Wisconsin, OSU and Nebraska. Hoke and his coaches know this. MSU is a better team. Being realistic encourages improvement.
I remain in my belief that Hoke and his staff would not have recruited DR. Though he is a fine football player he is not a big time QB. Good defenses (not great like LSU and Alabama) will corral him everytime.
MSU loses their captain/starting QB of three years after this season. Their best WR also graduates. Nichol is gone. Their only notable returns will be Worth, Gholston, and Bell, and that's if Worthy and Gholston elect not to leave early to make bank.
Hoke is going to run Sparty into the ground long haul. State may have won the game, but Hoke is demolishing them in the recruiting war.
It is hard to criticize SpartyCoachDickhead about re-creating the rivalry. This is similar to the way that Bo made the UM/OSU game such an incredible event every single year.
I think that it will be interesting to see how SpartyCoachWorstFuckingHumanBeingEver will recruit now that Hoke is killing it in-state as the Sparties don't have a national attraction. If they die in Michigan, then they should be hyperventilating about having quality recruits.
The only high profile recruits they got even during Rodriguez were die hard Sparty fans. Last year I think Rod out recruited Dantonio in state. Hoke is just flat out killing it in state, in Ohio, and other parts of the country.
I sat first row to see the players walk in. TL was pissed yelling back at some State player who was taunting him. A trainer had to keep pushing Lewan back. Hoke was walking behind Lewan and saw it all happen. From what I saw I didn't see Hoke say anything to Lewan. Hoke actually entered the tunnel with D. Gardner talking to him
We need to understand; this is their Super Bowl!
They're going to do anything to win.
We also can't keep looking down on them, saying that it doensn't matter, our biggest rival is OSU. We've lost 4 straight to MSU and 7 to OSU. We should be doing anything (with class) to win.
I'm looking down on them big-time after this game -- I can't imagine a team less worthy of any respect whatsoever.
actually the only correct response is to continue to look down on them. Giving them respect they don't deserve is how you turn this into acceptable behavior. State is a joke in every way imaginable and they could beat us 15 times in a row and it would still be true. There are bigger things than winning a football game, but to state when playing us that isn't true, and thats why they will always be a joke.
The film from this game needs to be the Big Ten's "How not to call a game" offseason teaching tool for the officials.
probally played the dirtiest game I have seen in a while. Late hits galore, a punch thrown and taunting. I would be pretty pissed to if my QB was injured on one of those late hits and the guy who punched me wasn't even thrown out of the game.
Even if UM had won I would be saying the same thing about MSU's dirty and classless play. It was a fucking embarrassing to the the Big Ten to have that on display. If Dantonio had any class he would have taken Gholston out of the game himself.
Honestly I've seen very similar games (penalty-wise) in the AU/UA games (Iron Bowl). Its sad to see it in the B1G.
But Chris Speilman said "Mark Dantonio represents clean, hard hitting football." He can't be wrong!
Spielman also said during the replay of the punch "He's out" (as in, he's going to get tossed out). Gholston sat a play then came back in. The announcers didn't even utter a peep.
Spielman did talk about how Dantonio needed to be accountable for how his players act on this field, and implied that Gholston should've sat on the bench.
The guy allows people to come back to his team from freaking jail without missing a play. You expected him to sit Ghoulston?
Yeah, I thought the announcing crew handled it pretty well. They're never going to say exactly what they feel in cases like this. Spielman also said something like, "I'm not saying Gholston's a dirty player, but he looks like one when he does things like that."
Dantonio and class don't belong within the same sentence, paragraph, post, webpage or universe.
for throwing a punch in a professional game, Blount was kicked off the team for most of a year for similar behavior at Oregon, so it stands to reason that Dantonio will do nothing.
bad. Triple post.
I've come to expect nothing but class and integrity from everyone in that program and their fans. They in no way have a crippling inferiority complext that 1,000 straight wins will never cure.
but I wouldn't have blamed Michigan if they bum rushed MSU's dirty players.
I wouldn't be upset, and might even cheer, a pair of torn ACLs for Jerel Worthy and William Gholston.
That is the difference!!
Sparty math. You're pointing out two calls over many years (one of which was debatable). That's nothing. Sparty had six cheap shot penalties, including a punch and a head-twist, in one game.
With woodley It wasnt intentional. They were deliberately trying to hurt him.
Take that "wishing injuries on opposing players" stuff to MLive or Bucknuts.
Did Worthy get busted for any personal fouls, or get away with anything dirty? Seemed like most of it was focused on Gholston.
Gholston (2), Adams, Worthy and Rush. There was also the horse collar on Odoms's punt return, but I don't remember who it was on--it was hard enough to remember our roster, let alone to know theirs with no names on the jerseys.
Personal foul penalties are nothing compared to a win over Michigan. They punched us in the mouth on every play and dared us to punch back. We didn't. Offensive line was steamrolled and their supposedly tattered offensive line took it to us. Disgusting.
EDIT: Meant as response to Jon Benke above.
on the final play? Why was State running the ball?
The Toons were high-fiving Rush (44) on the sideline after he put that hit on Denard. Next thing you know, he was back in the game.
I'm going back from the ledge and taking the long view wherein our recruiting will continue to get better (far better than Sparty's) and that the Mattison effect will continue in time (we had the ball down 7 before the pick 6 bs...). I hope that Taylor Lewan remembers this outcome and thinks about it daily for about a year.
Our defense, as long as the guys coming in live up to their potential, is going to be down right filthy. T-Rich and Countess playing side by side with Wilson laying the boom at safety will make QBs have nightmares. And Pipkins/Beyer(unless he sticks at LB)/Brown/Black/Wormley/Strobel/Ojemudia/Godin/Ash provide quality depth on the Dline. And do we even need to talk about the haul at LB coming in to go along with Ryan/Gordon/Demens/Morgan? Stone, Ringer, Ross, Boldin are going to be studs with the coaching they're going to get. So yeah, I'm not too worried about this little Sparty party going on, as we're going to see big improvements with the big improvements in recruiting, where as MSU will remain pretty much on the same level now.
As for offense, we need to worry about life after Molk. The tackles are stacked now with Magnuson and KK coming into the fold. Question is, who will start, and who will play behind Lewan for a couple year (unless they feel Schofield can do the job)?
State always has been and always will be classless. This game is their existance and they resent the fact that historically and traditionally OSU and ND represent bigger rivalries. This will not happen next year. And Despite a now 4 year streak, MSU still can't out recruit Michigan.
classless? like what our idiot Mike Hart said? to me, that was classless, and spawned sparty.
I'm sick of hearing this Mike Hart crap. Thats no excuse for the poor play on the field.
Ïf you think MSU was all class before 2007, you haven't followed this rivalry long.
I did not like what MH said when he said it. But to think that started this is ridiculous.
Sooo are you trying to say something that was said in a post-game interview is equal to punching a guy in the face during a game, and personal fouls abound? And taunting during a game?
Yeah...you obviously have no idea what you're talking about.
indy, I totally agree. The taunting incident has no purpose even being a thread on this board. I am more concerned about our play then if the other team "taunted" me or "played dirty". Why is it that when we lose, that this kinda crap comes up? Grow up. Let MSU deal with these problems.
Im not one for whining, and im SURE, Michigan players like Molk and Lewan arent either
spartans followed and taunted the Wolverines as they walked towards the end zone tunnel. The spartans probably got as deep asthe 15 yard line with this. Totally bush. Something one would see in the SEC. This was a significant event and one you won't hear the last of. Karma will be brutal towards msu next week when they play Wiscy.
I'm more concerned about our play, too.
That being said, when the other team takes 4 (?) personal foul penalties, 3 (?) of which are late hits to our quarterback, and 1 of which knocks him out of the game, I get pissed off. When the last touchdown they scored to make it 28-14 should have been negated due to taunting before the player got to the endzone, I get pissed off.
The Spartans are a bunch of bush league assholes and yes, we could have played better, but it's still a relevant topic.
basically sums of my thoughts. I don't see how any UM fan wouldn't be pissed off watching that crap, regardless of the outcome.
we played like bitches, and Msu treated us like bitches. we got out coached out played and out toughened.
What happened happened, but SOMETHING needs to be done, whether it is the Big Ten or MSU, that kind of stuff can't happen again
Taunting is a long, proud sparty tradition.
If Taylor Lewan focused his energy on his game, which generally stunk today.
The one thing that today's game confirmed in my mind is the their dufus prick coach either (1) cannot control his players on the field or on campus, or (2) actually coaches them to play dirty.
And what is he so pissed off at? You look at his face and think of a guy who never got laid and is therefore pissed at the world.
Would not suprise me in the slightest if they had a bounty on Denard's head or for knocking any of our guys out of the game.
the issue is that they were making dirty plays and seemed to be deliberately trying to injure Denard (grabbing his facemask and twisting after a late hit) and then the roughing the passer. I'm sure there were more I didn't see. That shouldn't be tolerated at all. Yep, we lost, and our play wasn't that great, and I have no issue with a clean loss. But when someone tries to deliberately injure a player from the other team, they should be called out, and if their coach doesn't put a stop to it (sits them for one play and then puts them back in), then the league should step in and start vacating wins or penalizing the team. Taunting and classless stuff like that is silly and poor sportsmanship, but the real concern is trying to injure other players. That's not sports, it’s assault.
