In the ACC they grade every call and no call as either correct or incorrect. They expect their officials to be correct at least 90% of the time.  In the last 4 minutes of the game, they expect their officials to be perfect.

Source: I once attended a lecture by the Director of ACC officials.

I'm sure the B10 has similar standards.

For a team like Michigan, you should hope Hightower works every game. For a team that relies on movement and penetration you want a ref that's going to call a foul. I can't stand watching college games which are ref'd like the NBA where they basically wait to see if the shot goes in or not before calling a foul.

I remember there being a very humorous set of Ed Hightower photoshops with him calling fouls in ridiculous situations.. If anyone has them and would care to repost I would be much obliged.

My old boss at Intramurals had an autographed basketball by Ed Hightower.  Unfortunately, I didn't realize that after I went into a tirade about how much I hate that douche.  I still hate him 15 years later.

My opinion is he is just a bad ref. As a ref myself (mostly football so far but my brother and I are getting in to basketball more) I can tell you that I've worked with lots of bad refs and none of them want one team or another to win, some are just not good at seeing the game. It is a huge thing for all officials to stay impartial. There were lots of bad calls tonight, but if you watch him work other games, I bet you see the same.

Every official has a different style, a slightly different interpretation of the rules, and a different point at which they decide fair play has stopped and a whistle needs to be blown.  Clearly the stats show that Hightower is quicker to whistle than some of his peers.  But that doens't mean he's bad at doing his job.
