Linebacker for MSU who applied for a 6th year of eligibility (only recently because he graduated like a week ago). He was not expected to get a 6th year because you need to have had 2 years lost to injury to get that. Because he earned scout team honors many times for one of those years he supposedly missed because of injury, authors here assumed the NCAA would not grant the 6th year.

But in order to make this stupid decision it is likely that Davis/MSU had to misrepresent the facts associated with his "injury" in one of those years. No integrity to be found anywhere is this matter.

schools. That way, rival schools can submit public evidence that the school in question fails to share with the NCAA.
No doubt the NCAA can't do its job; no doubt MSU's mendacity is unrivaled. So long as the NCAA makes decisions, Michigan as a rival school affected by the MSU decision ought to be able to appeal the MSU decision.
Doubtless this will never happen, but it should.

I think that could be a problem. Schools with lots of resources will start to dig up all the dirt they can on other schools (or create it) to use against them.
Another option would be having some accountability for the NCAA. I don't think they answer to anyone and their mishandling of so many things over the last decade or two are clear examples of ineptitude or corruption, possibly both.

He actually had the gall to sit there and say with a straight face that they aren't playing any of their freshman right now because they don't want to have to lie about an injury to preserve their redshirt. He said that is not how they run their program.

Because the year he was supposed to be injured which would have justified his sixth year, he was the practice team player of the week at least twice. Maybe he was just really great at watching film.

6th years are supposed to be for players who lost two years to injury. Last year counts, but he was clearly not injured while he was redshirting as a freshman. His MSU bio lists him as the Scout Team Player of the Week during weeks that are both early in the season and late in the season. He can also be seen in uniform on the sideline during many of MSU's games that year.

This is a correct statement of the rule. It's neither here nor there, but I feel this rule SHOULD be amended so that a player may receive a 6th year of eligibility even if he takes a voluntary redshirt so long as the player is unable to compete in his 5th year due to injury.

I think the rule is that you get 5 years to play out your 4 years of eligibility, so you can take a voluntary redshirt for a year. But if a player is injured and unable to play for multiple seasons, then they can appeal to have a 6th year to get through their 4 years of eligibility.
So, MSU is claiming that Davis falls into this category. But during one of the years in question where he was "too injured" to play (as opposed to taking a voluntary redshirt), MSU awarded him as scout team player of the week...which sounds an awful lot like a voluntary redshirt year and not a year where he was unable to play due to injury.
At least that's how I understand it--NCAA rules experts on here can feel free to correct me.

Although it's obviously violates the way the rule is supposed to work, I'm glad it happened from a perspective of "fairness" or "justice" from Davis's perspective. A world in which 6th years are granted when you have a season-ender as a 5th year is a better world.
If I was Mario Ojemudia I'd be extremely pissed, though.
