Everybody over-signs grad students. :(
This is maaaaybe premature there, ESPN. Maryland #1 FWIW.
Everybody over-signs grad students. :(
Ha! How true.
Washington, in case you were wondering.
...kills people, murders people...
Damn you MGoBlog why can't I +1 when I am blurry eyed drunk and feel so compelled...I guess I am relegated to getting blind drunk
If someone is awake and has an iPhone can you cut and copy Brian's Front page "NON-Hoke Options:Extant" to the MGoBoard so we can discuss. Either I'm an Idiot (debatable), I cannot create content and I'm Ass-u-meing you tech people can. Thanks.
Calling Alabama a "school" may be a bit of a stretch.
In all seriousness, when I was applying to law school, Alabama Law was the best buy in the country.
Unfortunately, now is not the time to be choosing law schools based upon bang for your buck.
Not at a place like Alabama, but at schools like HLS, YLS, Stanford, and Michigan you are still getting a very good job when you graduate.
Yeah, I kinda think that's what he meant. None of those would be classified as "bang for your buck."
Are you sure it wasn't just run out of a Best Buy?
that would make you a shoo-in for a Supreme Court clerk.
you can get one out of a box of captain crunch.
But it is only $3 with two UPCs
I would go there, but all the confederate flags are an eyesore.
There are hundreds of confederate battle flags, surely there is one you might like.
Folks down here say : American by birth, southern by the grace of god.
I know, I am just kidding. I'm down here to.
Yeah, I was just meaning these people are intense about everything down here and yes cheating at football is mandatory.
That flag from the front bumper to the sliding rear window.........breathtaking.
my name is Inigo Montoya, you have killed my father, prepare to die.
Disclaimer: was a funny post about Alabama/hillbillies/etc., but too close to political line after some self reflection.
Go ahead and jump off the bandwagon. Don't think you can just jump back on later however.
You consistently have a wonderful sense of humor.
Of course he does. He's from Wyoming.
. . . was to follow the University of Chicago. Abolish division 1 football. Gentlemen should not sully themselves on the gridiron, or at least, only do so against Carnegie-Mellon and MIT.
(In truth, I have no idea who Chicago's opponents are.)
Carnegie Mellon is indeed on the Maroon schedule...
Chicago's town rival was SAIC.
He was a vrigin till he was 28. Roll tide.
I would up vote you if I could. Say what you want about the WWL but they consistently have some damn funny commercials.
You bet you can get a degree there, and it won't take much effort. Party on
Unfortunately it is for immediate family members, cousin, uncles and aunties. Oh yeah and Uncle Jessie impersonators. Right on the corner of Banjo and Fiddle.
excuse me while I go to the latrine ! I about shit me knickers laughing !
Hick-speak and pirate-speak are the same? YAR?
depends on how you define "degree."
[repeat of already mentioned joke about grad school oversigning, with comment that my grad school incoming class at U-M was roughly double the size of traditional classes -- nice fight to the death for advisors]
Can you play football and are rated a 4/5 star prospect by ESPN/RIVALS/SCOUT?
Then no, you should come to Michigan instead.
If you want to get an education, you should come to Michigan
I'm 5'8, 150lbs, and had a 162 LSAT.
As someone who as a degree from Alabama, I can say... eh... nothing that's going to change the minds of anyone around here.
you're making me shit me knickers a second time !
It's a pleasantly neutral state with a pleasantly neutral college in a pleasantly neutral town. Moving on . . .
HA! I hear back from Ross next week. And as bad as I want to go there I'm dreading the next two years of Saturdays. I just submitted my Duke-Fuqua application this afternoon and thought it was too ironic that the Duke is at the top of Men's Basketball again...
Oh, and they have a Coack K Center for Leadership. Why do we not have a similar research center named after Bo? Pretty sure Coach K didn't have to pay to plaster his name all over that school.
Paterno has given millions to Penn State ....
Go Blue !
We're totally doing a signing day thread next week. I got all excited today when I got a mandatory info email today.
Wait for B-School? I didn't get an email. Shoot, don't reply. I don't want to know... I don't need the stress for the next week.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to walk on. I don't think the real recruits have to pay $200 for the application fee and spend close to $1k to fly to Ann Arbor for an interview. Plus, I'm pretty sure I'm not getting a full-scholarship :-/
Don't worry about it. It wasn't from admissions at all, it was some newsletter thing that I get about once a month--I just got super excited because I'm over-stressed too.
Seriously though, I'm doing a Ross Round 1 signing day open thread next week. Hopefully I get a committable offer...
It's a great idea! I may not choose to sign the letter of intent too soon, but assuming I have multiple options, I'm going to make a video of me choosing between a bunch of hats on a table and post it on YouTube!
Best of luck to you! I'm hoping it works out for me, but I'm just so nervous about my interview. I didn't do poorly, but it was certainly the fastest 30 (really 25) minutes I've spent interviewing.
The business school is one of the few things that still rocks about Michigan these days...and just find your way to The Bus on Saturdays. Win or lose, you won't remember the pain the next day. Only the pain of the hangover.
The mathematics department does pretty well too. I wish I would have had the money to study at the business school though.
Minus the other 40 departments that are ranked in the top 25, yes, the B school is the only thing that rocks about Michigan right now.
You best not get injured... Or you will be on your way to Southern Arkansas like THAT!
.....already miss RR, didn't know Brandon as this well yea.....
Not sure what you just said, but none of this is surprising. Countess committed when RR was a very lame duck, and Frost and Lyons both said they saw this coming. I'm not that worried about it.
But is there a way to check a classes roster at UMich? I can't seem to find the roster for my SOC 100 roster. The reason I ask is because the professor said there was a football player in the class and I want to know who it is.
Soc 100! Way to challenge yourself, Leisure, Sex and Alcohol.
/my BA is in sociology
Just taking this class "for fun".
Nice, a fellow Secondary Ed Social Studies major! Yea, we piss excellence.
English will be what I'll be hired for, but the History intrigues me, ties in nicely with the English, and quite frankly is nice hobby to have.
It's amazing how much History repeats itself, and how things occurring in one decade can affect things centuries later. I love it, and can't get enough.
God, you're such a student.
Enjoy it while it lasts. Soon you'll realize that those two majors are worthless in the real world. I know, from experience.
Care to shed some light and insight into my sad, most likely naive little world? IE, are you a H. and/or E. major? Teacher?
Well thanks for crushing my dreams. Just kidding...it is hard finding a permanent job with it though. I am still looking to land a permanent teaching job. Hopefully I get into TFA, I find out Jan. 18th.
I knew that was coming.
EDIT: Part of the reason I'm doing HS and not college is because I want to coach football. Ultimate goal: teach HS for a little bit while coaching football, then gradually work up through the ranks with the final stop being Ann Arbor to be the head coach at the University of Michigan.
Good deal. Remember me when you make it. I coach O-Line/D-Line. I would gladly take any position at Michigan of your choosing however.
Do what I did. I got a degree in sociology. Then I ditched all the acedemic stuff and found a really expensive medical device to sell. Some people don't have to, but at one point I had to make a choice between doing something acedemically stimulating and buying nice things. It was actually a vain decision until I had a family, then it just became a "good" decision.
Are you hiring? I am looking into buying a family soon.
Unfortunately, I don't have the authority to hire, otherwise you'd be in. I just drive around all day reminding people why they need to buy (another) BladderScan. It's sexy.
nice work, fellas.
Bring the loaner or new scanner by the biomed dept so they can safety check it and log it into there system.
You must be a fellow med rep.
Rightup there with History of Canada class, which I had. Social Studies/Secondary ed. Major here.
Wow - did you get caught up on a lot of sleep? I am Canadian, love history, and would find that class rough..
As a doctoral student at Alabama, should I be offended by this thread?
You should. But you probably knew that already...
Doesn't help your case...
To the op, going to grad school doesn't change your allegiance. You'll still bleed maize and blue. And you'll just have to take shit from your peers and profs.
I'm a Michigan undergraduate and die-hard fan. I have attend Notre Dame Law School during the three worst years for MIchigan football since they the invention of gravity. I wear my maize and blue in class, around campus, and in close proximity to ND's 330-pound starting Offensive Guard.. And I'm still alive...
But that doesn't mean it doesn't suck sometimes.
I'd have to say being a former M student and Michigan state grad student might suck even worse. Spartans never shut up . At least we've beat ND the past couple seasons. If I have to listen to one more spartan say that they would've beat TCU in the rose bowl, I'll rip my own head off.
around here with the Michigan State 34 Wisconsin 24 score and the rose and replace them with Alabama 49 Michigan State 7. Also replace the rose with a fraternity paddle.
You know, if I was an MSU fan and MSU would have won their bowl game, I could understand that line of thinking. But no matter who I'm a fan of, if my team gets smoked like MSU did (or like UM did, for that matter) I'm not getting cocky and say we could be anyone, let alone the team who just won the Rose Bowl.
Did you get my message from a few weeks ago about the green light to call?
Did you get my reply?
There are plenty excellent reasons to go to UA. One of the best metallurgical programs in the country. Had one of the best library sciences programs, too, when I was there. And there's City Cafe across the river in Northport.
I believe it's pronounced "hari-kiri"
I'm doing it because I want to improve kids lives and make them better individuals, their classroom experiences and how they view the world, they way they think and come to conclusions, and the way they critically think about issues and life in general.
Plus I love English/History and want to continue my learning and understanding of these subjects along with possibly planting the seeds in other students so that even if they don't grow up to be educators, perhaps through the course of taking one of my classes they can develop a passion for either the subjects I'm teaching or other subjects.
...and I guess I want to coach a little football along the way, too. :-D
Honestly, I hope you keep that attitude your whole life, many can't. I also hope your wife doesn't stategically leave open webites of resorts in St. Lucia and make you feel like you're killing Santa Claus if she can't go. You'd be amazed what a woman who bears your child thinks she "deserves." You'd also be amazed how awesome St. Lucia looks on a website.
Unless you have sweet negotiating skillz and bargain her down to a trip to Carribean themed water park....
Those are not skillz I possess.
I really, really appreciate it. Many people either laugh or tell me I can't do what I want to do for X or Y reason.
Is actually pretty reasonable if you book at the right time, and schedule your flights on Tues-Thurs. We were planning a trip there last year, then reality hit. Jamaica is a good alternative, Negril is pretty awesome and relatively cheap.
We actually went to Negril last March, it was amazing. We stayed at some little beachside hotel for pretty cheap - nothing for amenities other than right on the beach. It was perfect.
Check out the Blue Cave resort (I think that was its name), also Point Village is nice and cheap (away from the bustle of 7 mile beach). If you're a bit more adventurous, go further down the coast to Jakes in St. Elizabeth, it's unreal.
Got married in St. lucia and was worth every penny.84 degrees every day and not a cloud in the sky(in january). If you ever get the chance, do the all-inclusive with Sandals. You won't be disappointed and right now they've got some great deals going on.
Well said, you have to have that mentality for a life of certain poverty. It is the only reason I haven't given up on the profession yet.
Keep the faith brother! Haha. Random, but for some reason I pictured you way, way older. Probably because of your avatar, lol.
Sweet Jesus, put that hell fire feline out of its misery!!!
EDIT: immediately regretted that one.
I was about to say...
That's your own fault. Only had to learn to kick a ball 20 yds and could have gone to school at umich for free.
Sources say many top Medical and Law school candidates are reconsidering their commitments to Michigan's 2011 class. " I think I'll wait until the new Dean is announced to see if Michigan is still on my list " said Brain McSmartie at the annual East-West all star Quantum Mechanics finals. Another, unnamed source says top Surgery recruit Blade Wecuttem may now go to Harvard instead, since " the Spread " dissection method in Anatomy there is a better fit. Many who have already spent their Freshman year Redshirted may defect to Ivy League schools happy to have them, though they will have to sit out the mandatory year before they will be eligible for the Nobel Prize. In other stories MSU grads have impressed first grade teachers with their ability to pronounce several three letter words..
What I'd do is the following:
1) think long and hard about why you want a PhD. It's not exactly glamorous spending your twenties (and thirties) in the library.
2) make a ranked list of the best programs in your field if you want to be a prof - your advisors will certainly help you with this.
3) read about the parlous state of the academic job market - which is resembling fight club right about now (check out inside higher ed.com and chronicle.com)
4) think about how much location matters to you relative to the quality of the program and its placements.
You must really have a passion and burning desire to be in the academy, especially if you're pursuing a PhD in a field where a PhD doesn't open doors in the private sector (ie, econ, hard sciences, political science to a certain degree). In fields like history (my field), you have to be willing to work and teach at small colleges you've perhaps never heard of.
To put some numbers on the job market stuff that Moe mentions, my department will get about 150 applications for 3-4 spots in our American history doctoral program, and around 250 for a job posting in American history. On the job market, you will have almost no say in where you live if you want to have a chance to get a job.
I would go so far to say that in academic subjects like history, english, soc., anthropology, you shouldn't even waste your time applying to a place like Alabama, unless you want to teach within the state. There are about 20-30 schools that will make you competitive for most jobs (for some jobs, the number drops to 4-5), and you need to figure out whether anyone at those schools does the type of work you want to do. Not to mention that the work conditions for doctoral students at places like Alabama are notoriously bad, with students teaching lecture courses on their own and receiving very little in the way of compensation.
Think long and hard about the tenure process for professors and whether you want to run that gauntlet. Even my advisor who has an endowed chair and a vita that's two miles long thinks this process is a harrowing nightmare.
I was driving into work this morning and listening to Mike and Mike. The said that Ross and the Miami Dolphin brass were flying out to meet with Harbaugh. They talked about what poor etiquette this is on the aprt of the Dolphins and Harbaugh as Miami has not even fired their current head coach. It is an unwritten rule that coaching candidates do not talk with teams that currently have a head coach. They most certainly do not meet with them. I am kind of ashamed of Harbaugh on this one. Also Mike and Mike said that the word is that Ross is going to offer Harbaugh 7-8 million per year. If that is true than the NFL owners are idiots. You are telling me that you are going to offer that kind of money to a college coach with little to no NFL experience. That is just crazy and highly insulting to current NFL head coaches. I have nothing at all against Harbaugh and if someone offered me that kind of money i would take it too.
They have the best experimental fiction program in the country (or Syracuse depending whether you're more of a formalist and want to study with Martone or a absurdist and want to study with Saunders...)
