Early games OPEN THREAD
is Hazell wearing a cutoff shirt? If so I like him already
He knows his fan base, the preferred shirt of all Hoosiers in the summer.
Don't talk about Purdue and use the term Hoosier ever again.
-Sincerely Every IU student/grad
Calm down, bub. The best university in the state of Indiana is Purdue. Just ask employers around this great nation and the world. Yes, Notre Dame can piss off.
Us here residents of Indiana don't call ourselves Indianans. If it irritates both sides ill do it more often actually.
I live in Indiana and go to IU. I know what Hoosier means. I kind of said it as a joke. Guess no one got it...
Joey and Mowey. Journalism gold.
I'm here to discuss and drink! Someone pass me a beer!
Buffalo looks so teeny compared to OSU
Great start Purdue.
I'm not sure if its been stated anywhere but is there going to be a LiveBlog for the game?
If we want to get crazy.
Oh man, lets get crazy.
Subs on me boys!
You wantto get crazy.....Quick someone get the Feta.
I just went complete all out crazy. I started a eating habit change and cut out cheese entirely from my diet. Just had a chicken breast for lunch and found a slice of American cheese in the fridge. Threw that shit on top and melted it. CRAZY!!!
Ryan Shazier gave his eyebrows to Cris Carter
Wow great start Purdue!!!
INT FEST in Cincy.
Also Florida-Int'l-Maryland at 12:30 and Rice-Texas A&M at 1.
That little out route is wide open.
Hi Ohio State. You should guard the out
Don't worry, Buffalo will be dumb enough not to run that every play.
Buffalo is moving the ball better than I thought. OSU's corners are giving the receivers lots of space.
Odd, because I've been hearing all week in Columbus that "OSU is gonna be physical in their secondary, and play a lot of man."
As was Tebow.
jimmy clausen was cut to, yay. probably going to announce whoever signs him will win a super bowl
Me thinks the OSU timekeeper didn't reset the counter correctly.
Buffalo has looked fine; OSU's offense is going to be scary today.
How the hell do you have delay of game after a time out?
Way to blow a timeout and still not get it snapped on time. Amazing how often that seems to happrn
Well, that seemed like an easy throw. Buffalo doesn't have great corners I'm guessing, but that was too easy.
I could have thrown that TD to Devin Smith. 7-0 Ohio.
What a douche move by OSU.
Agreed. At least doing that this early.
I have no issue with it.
Oregon goes for two against a MAC team on the first drive? I don't think it is douchey, just dumb strategy to waste a 2pt play on a meaningless down.
It is well known that Oregon does this.
Chip Kelly is a well known douche too so there's that.
Oregon does not go for two every time. They typically do it once and then kick XPs. The idea behind that is to make the other team get two at some point. Oregon thinks they're better at it and they are. Urban doing it both of the first two TDs? Seems pretty low class to me.
Let me be clear that I thought Chip was low class as well
OSU went for 2 against Buffalo? That's just sad. Urban is a dick.
Buffalo is so bad, they were D3 20 years ago.
Purdue is going to have trouble getting a field goal out of this.
They'll need every point they can get from this MAC bottom-feeder.
I'm surprised that OSU would waste a 2-pt play on Buffalo, but I guess that's Meyer's mindset right now.
Running up the score to make up for them scheduling one of the weakest non conference schedules.
What we thought it would be, but hoped it wouldn't be. Ohio's defense looks very vulnerable though.
See, I don't think we'll have any take on their offense this week. Buffalo is profoundly overmatched defensively; this is like one of those games where a Texas Tech QB throws for a billion yards against a SWAC team.
Man, that corner was burned by Buffalo. I know they're playing younger starters, but that looked easy.
Galloway is a turrrrible color guy. "Got to give your defense a chance to rest after that drive." It lasted 4 plays!
Why is Buffalo even punting?
Buffalo is horrible.
If Buffalo keeps playing fast OSU may put 70 (or 77 with all 2-pt conversions) on the board
So that guy has good speed?
The announcers in the Wiscy-UMass game just said Wisconsin's playcall is vintage Big 10/Wisconsin football. Considering that means a mediocre team beating the crap out of a cupcake, I'm not sure how proud I'd be.
I hate Ohio so much.
What is the point of going for two? Again?
Scoring more points than you would have by kicking an extra point, extending the lead, etc.
Meyer is a prick. There is no excuse for going for two, twice in a row, on game that you completely control.
I just don't get the 2-point conversion calls. I mean, at some point you are just trying to act tough about being able to score against a horrible MAC team. I mean, Alabama could go for 2 every time if they wanted to as well; they don't because they don't have anything to prove. It feels like Meyer thinks he needs to win every game by 50 points because everyone knows how crappy this schedule is and how they'll be perceived competing for a title.
Free points. If you can get 2 instead of 1 every time, why not do it? It's the other team's fault if they can't stop it.
Nice of OSU to schedule up this season...
going for 2 pts again, can you say douche" I mean do you really need to do this to Beefalo?
Urban sure knows how to play the political end of the college poll game. Most folks are only going to look at the score anyway and he's going to make sure it's as high as possible.
But people will also look at the competition. At some point, anyone with a pulse knows Buffalo is turrible and that dropping lots of points on them doesn't mean anything.
I didn't see the need for that.
Did you see a need for the first one?
First score in a new season. I have no issue with it.
I have no problem going for two early in a game. If you can't stop someone its your own problem. Now if OSU goes for two when they are up by forty, that is a different story.
I agree to an extent, but everyone knows Buffalo is no match for OSU. Running up the score is just dumb.
Jim Harbaugh disagrees!
gonna have to wait a little longer to go for 2 pts again Uban Asshole!
2 every single time this year, and urban thnks that mathematically it will work in his favor over the long run
Did anyone else notice that OSU's kickoff formation is weird? The coverage team is lining up very close to the kicker. Buffalo seems to have a very hard time blocking anybody to set up a return (although that could just be the caliber of the competition).
illinois is still terrible.
About 99% sure Kevin Sumlin has some form of glitter in his hair.
kinda funny watching Braxton try to show he can be a pocket passer against an inferior opponent.
Sad for Buffalo. The Buffalo football players were staying at the hotel I had my wedding for their football camp. I told a few of their players to beat the Buckeyes. They seemed really excited and hopeful.
How is the 'pocket' defined? If the guy scrambles around, but stays between the tackles, is he considered 'out' of the pocket?
I think once he "breaks" the pocket, he shouldn't be able to get back into it. But it feels like the enforcement varies based on if you left the pocket or not.
Maybe Miller left the pocket there - it seemed close. Just curious about the definition of 'pocket', generally.
Sooooo...should THAT be a targeting penalty?
to account for his oversigning of better athletes?
Tuning in late because I am working for the next few hours, but I take it Ohio State is running 2-point conversions at the end of TD drives because they can against Buffalo.
Braxton Miller is 7/7 for 103 yards passing, and is averaging 14 YPC right now. I am sure Ohio State fans will take this as validation of something, but it's difficult to get much validation from playing and mauling Buffalo, I would think.
Every mediocre throwing QB has a couple of games like this where the coaches use overmatched squads to show the guy can pass as well as run. I hate to say it, Denard had a couple of those games too, though certainly not to this extent. But Miller still doesn't look that good throwing the ball; it just is really easy when the WR is 10 yards open.
damn...Joey see's no fault in anything the bucks do. At least Speilman would occasionally find something to correct.
Holy shit OSU is never going to lose they have a god for a coach. We will never beat them again.
So exactly what are the stipulations on that targeting penalty? I mean that at least looked a penalty
UMass is holding its own against Wiscy. Might have something to do with crappy Wiscy, but that's impressive.
If I was Buffalo, I'd take a shot at Miller or another skill player if OSU goes for another 2-pt conversion. Take the penalty.
Take a shot at Urban.
Self-reply too stronk.
I'd be fine with that. Do a Varsity Blue thing and throw the ball right at him when you are trying to stop the clock.
Not to injure, but if someone is going to run some crack-back blocks and run up the score, tackle the guy even if he doesn't have the ball.
I am not advocating hurting a player or anything like that, but at the same time the other coach doesn't need to be rubbing it in because he wants to show how big his schlong is.
"And the crowd's unhappy" (about OSU not going for 2)
Shut up Joey, holy crap was it ESPN's goal to get the two most annoying announcers possible?
Not true. Chris Berman isn't in the booth.
to say remember me?
Real question - For a year plus one quarter OSU has run that play where the RB steps forward and then they snap it immediately. He isn't set for a 'count'. How is that not illegal motion? (Must not be since they have never been called for it)
Henry Clay and Thomas Jefferson would be proud.
Ohio has some big dudes on their D Line. Buffalo sucks, intensely.
3:30 can't get here fast enough.
I love watching Big Ten teams destroy Mac teams. That is how it should be! I want the Big Ten to be good.
Hope Buffalo enjoys their share of the gate today. Holy shit.
I say it every year. I'll never understand in a sport that is supposed to be all about toughness how everyone gets so bent out of shape over a blowout, going for two, etc.
"Concussions aren't a big deal; the players understand the risk when they sign up. Just don't hurt their feelings by scoring too many points please!"
It's sort of like the concept of chivalry in medeival battlefields...there's a certain code of conduct there even in the face of death.
Exactly. Fans get butthurt about losing and then project that onto the players, as if the players go back into the locker room and cry after losing by 50.
I agree that you never will understand it. That's kinda sad, for you, but at least you know your limitations.
Is it just me, or does Ohio's o-line look really bad so far?
The D-line has been penetrating all day. For four seniors, the O-line is really going to struggle against the B1G.
in two decades. He coached Simeon Rice and Dana Howard at illinois.
Buffalo applying occasional pressure.
Decker not looking great at RT. Getting bull rushed by a guy 50 lbs lighter.
That was a good taco pants throw.
SUNY-Buffalo is 1-31 all-time against BCS opponents. Seventeen of those games were against the soon-to-be-defunct Big East. Buffalo has never beaten a B1G team - they're all-time 0-4. In those 4 games, they've lost by an average of 34ppg.
Buffalo's only win was 2002 against Rutgers.
Ha! Nice job, Buffalo!
There will be a liveblog. It will kick off at 3:00. We'll have subs*
Will it be crazy? Metaphorically?
Joey does not enunciate properly when he annunciates.
With Towson and North Dakota State victorious, that's already two FCS wins over FBS teams. If William and Mary and Villanova all win, that's four. Does anybody know what the most FCS wins over FBS teams in one week is? I know those games still have a ways to go, but still.
Probably the coach in me, but Shazier infuriates me how he never wraps.
Come back in a 13 weeks to validate this prediction, Shazier will not wrap-up Toussaint at a critical junction, Michigan TD.
Maybe it's the Michigan fan in me, but I love that he never wraps up.
I don't recall, but was he one of the two that collided on Denard's TD run last year?
What the hell was that Buffalo WR doing?
Lack of discipline.
Rice walking down the field like its nothing and scoring.
Rice up 7-0 on A&M
UB just got a TD
Hey, no shutout.
The Buckeye defense looks like they might be willing to concede another score or two, but I wouldn't get excited.
I'm hearing Thomas Gordon isn't playing today
Where are you hearing this?
The app was a bit slow on the refresh
I had no Idea that YouTube sensation Jeff Luc transferred to Cinn.
Backed up deep in their own territory, Purdue decided that 3rd and 12 was not good enough. The delay of game call makes it 3rd and 17.
On two snaps here, Cincinnati is able to almost pretend Purdue's offensive line is not there and they nearly get to Henry, who is being forced to loft some dangerous passes into the air.
....and then Cincinnati fumbles a punt return, recovers, fumbles, recovers, then fumbles irretrievably. Purdue ball deep in Cincinnati territory. Whoops.
Watching this game after watching the MSU-WMU game last night makes me worry about the QB play of our conference. And apparently everyone else too.
No shutout, go Buffalo.
He was lost on that play. Phil Steele's 2nd Team All B1G LB.
This is not looking good!!! hahahahaha
Miller throws another TD! What can't he do!?
Lets go buffalo!
Braxton scoring TD'a for Buffalo!
He is just that good!!
Nice!!! Buffalo making it a game again... For now.
Miller didn't look fast chasing that lb who ran the interception back to the zone.
Dontre Wilson and Miller have all that "SEC speed" and can't catch a 250# LB to the endzone. LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Beth Mowens,everybody! yikes...
Somewhere, Pam Ward just shotgunned a beer and threw the can at the TV
It's super effective !
I guess this is why they went for two. It should be a one score game right now. Maybe Urban can see the future.
They are going to show JFF so many times on the sideline for the first half
Johnny Finger Foods?
Johnny Fantastical Fairy
The rice owls have an offensive juggernaut. Lol
Anyone understand what Buffalo's defense is doing or at least trying to accomplish on that td (again)? That 2nd Hall run would have gone for any amount.
I believe what they were doing and have been doing quite a bit so far is being Buffalo.
Rice is winning!
Well that was disheartening
A&M goes 8-4 this year at best this year with this defense
6 starters on D are suspended. It makes a huge difference.
Shazier carted off field
Saying cramps, but I don't think they usually cart people off the field for cramps, do they?
My thoughts exactly
he has to get his 1st half tat bro...and an IV
Must be a really bad cramp
Extra bad cramp, maybe menstrual?
Carter, Posey. Bring disgrace on your self. Miss your senior year.
Frank Clark vs decker. Come on hype train
Decker gave up his second sack. Even Galloway says, "He's owened Decker when rushing the passer."
Buckeyes offensive line looks a bit shaky.
This is the longest 1st half of football that I can remember. This OSU game feels like it will never end.
THere was a lot of talk out of cbus about this offensive line being massively improved, but I don't know about that so far. ohio D also still having problems playing in space and wrapping people up.
Still a damn good team, but man.... not a polished product by any means. Certainly a couple vulnerable spots if we can put it together.
More separation from Buffalo WR... but no catch
Armani Reeves -- nice hands
Is Mack really that good? I mean is he that good that he makes OSU's line look like Michigan State's?
Phil Steele named him a third-team Preseason All-American.
IDK he looks like Clowney is supposed to look out there.
He is being looked at as a 1st round pick by NFL scouts. He is a S
stud but it is much easier to gameplan to neutralize one great defensive player if the rest aren't good.
Lol @ A&M...terrible without Manziel
Texas A&M will score over 30 points in the second half when the Johnny Manziel show begins.
The Munchie Legaux showcase should make the second half interesting if the Cincinnati running game keeps gaining steam. The Bearcats have outgained the Boilermakers with 175 yards to their 88 yards, but 137 of those 175 yards belong to Legaux.
I haven't heard but did they add or change any rules for this year jus curious...like last year they had if your helmet comes off you have to sit out the next play
You can now keep a guy on the field by burning a timeout. Otherwise, it's the same as last year. You're out unless an opponent intentionally removes it (or something like that).
Gotcha thanks man
Rice has some big boys and nise skill guys, their QB is good.
I bet you there setting up Manziel to have some second half heroics and ESPN will just lather themselves in Manziel Mania.
2nd half should be interesting for A&M, and whether Manziel's arm shows any signs of fatigue after his offseason
So, Purdue's defense probably needed to be off the field, and so they find a way to achieve that - terrible pass coverage and - a few plays later - giving Cincinnati a nice crease through which they could punch the ball into the end zone. 21-7 Cincinnati, and Purdue's defense is now off the field for now.
WVU down 10 to William & Mary in the 3rd Q
EDIT: Just cut it to 7. But still.
What's Yeldon and company going to do to A&M's rush defense?
Decker having a great game if you're a fan of NFL Blitz
Adrian Witty with pick-6. Never forget.
Just saw Adrian Witty run back an Int. for Cincinnati. Had to look him up because his name sounded familiar. It's been a while.
Wow, they are awful.
for Hope constantly talking shit while he was HC there.
ohio can't defend those quick sideline throws at all today. Buffalo should just keep throwing them
Well, the Rob Henry Experiment is going splindedly here....Adrian Witty intercepts a nice, inoffensive pass from Henry on what looked like an in route and returns it for a TD. 28-7 Cincinnati after the kick.
Fumble Purdue. Down 28-7. Boiler up!
Yeah Ohio looks ready to compete with Bama.
I think not.
Reeves is really bad... Their defense in general looks really bad
You can't stop the Bulls. Contain them. Maybe.
Being the first game of the year, its hard to tell if Buffalo is game or if OSU has more questions than we thought. I know OSU is missing a few players and have a few injuries this game, but yikes I know the Bucknuts can feel good about Buffalo driving the ball of them.
And in regards to Mack, he definitely looks the part of a future NFLer but I'm not impressed with OSU's line either. They have not dominated the line of scrimmage and allowed more pressure than I would expect.
TD Buffalo - this is at the very best a luke warm debut of the #2 team in America. They'll still win this game, but I can't see them feeling very good about it.
On a 20-7 run since going down big early. Hard to spin that too positively.
Wow Purdue is laying an egg against Cincy....
Backup refs at the Cinci Purdue game. Purdue intercepts and the Cinci guy gets 1 hand in and gets credit for a touchdown. Under review
Review got it right. My reference to backup refs is tho the Seattle Green Bay game a year ago. Purdue gets the ball at the 20.
Buffalo is a juggernaut. It explains why Urbz kept going for two. He was getting ready for the hellfire that is Buffalo.
So this is the Ohio team that everyone is supposed to fear?
Oh, wow. Another Purdue turnover gives the Bearcats the ball in Purdue territory. Imagine that, and it was going so well up until this point for Purdue.
Cincinnati now has 1st and goal inside the Purdue 9 yard line...until the delay of game call there.
In Purdue game... I wish they would fix this rule. If a defender has two hands on the ball, tight to his body, the receiver getting one hand on the ball should not be awarded a catch. It's one thing when both guys have even possession, two hands on the ball, whatever... but that should have been an INT
I blame this on OSU and their inconsistent coaching: they tell their DBs to not use their arms, what the hell is Decker supposed to do!?
Kenny G sighting
Probably just cramps, but if I was an ohio fan I'd be beside myself with how things are going at this point. Good thing they don't have any big non-conference games to prepare for.
SO MUCH FUN WATCHING OHIO
Braxton out, Guiton in. I think Miller had a cramp, he pulled up while scrambling and fell down on his own.
No. No. No.
That's Bogus !!!
OSU definitely looks like they should be playing in the National Championship.
this is a bad sign for ohio when BUffalo's front is really starting to win in the trenches. Ouch
Wow ohio's oline is looking bad
They are waiting on Miller to make a play.
Just Ohio's luck
Mack is a stud.
Dude is everywhere.
If I'm the Lions I would take a look at Mack, dude is one man defense. Worth a late round look at any rate.
NFL scouts already knew about Mack before this game.
Whoever asked is Mack is that good or if OSU is struggling....this is one vote for Mack being pretty darn good
for a strip and sack. He is really struggling at LT.
You'd think a guy who coached in Florida would be able to have his players stay hydrated properly.
That was about as lackluster as a TD drive can be
Purdue sucks, but Cincy has a chance to win their conference this year, so positive thoughts.
Illinois is up by 22, so.... Go Big 10!
Why is he waving his finger to his own crowd?
Buffalo was 4-8 last year. With or without Miller, I expected OSU to have this game done in the 2nd quarter.
Buffalo returned almost everyone on offense and most of their defense, so they should be much improved this year.
I mean, it's still a MAC team and you're right. No excuse if it was us. But they won't be 4-8 this year FWIW
They will be lucky to win 5.
Is that even a college rule? Seems like I have complained about them never calling it before
Come on, Purdue. This is just sad.
Is it too late to send Indiana to the west and bring Purdue to the east division?
Holy crap. Someone needs to make a gif of that Rice touchdown.
I thought white men couldn't jump
Great play by a RIce receiver at the end of the half. Tip drill that looked like an easy pick turned into a reception for a TD. Rice only down 7.
With how much sucking the B1G has done so far, I certainly hope that we play well. I've certainly expected more from Ohio state so far.
The Big 12 is on the verge of losing 2 to FCS teams. WV is in a dog fight with the Tribe of W&M
Chalk it up to first game oddities.
Yay Adrian Witty (from Deerfield Beach, FL) with the INT for Cincy.
Lol at TAMU
Not sure why BUffalo doesn't just keep throwing those quick outs. They've worked every time.
after scripting its first quarter plays and Buffalo getting over the shock of playing at the Shoe, has actually outscored the Buckeyes. The Buckeyes have demonstrated their talent and their inexperience and shown that while they can beat you bunch of different ways, their defense isn't NC material nor even close to what MSU showed last night.
Right up the middle on a play that they should have seen coming and it gets 10 yards? Not a good sign....
They have looked better than average on offense since and OK defensively.
SHazier got lost on that wheel
Their line is OK, but the LBs and secondary haven't done anything against BUFFALO. I know they're missing some people for suspensions, and it's really hot and humid, but...c'mon!
Well that Villanova QB just got rocked
Another Big 12 team in a dog fight with an FCS. Go W&M.
the receiver from making a play on the ball. How about calling it.
I think I've seen all day and it was in the end zone!
PI doesn't exist when the ball isn't catchable. A hold could have been called though.
ohio lucks out again
themselves in the foot. I'm nauseous.
Of course the snap is fumbled...
I think there's a tendency for people to lump "FCS" into a single bucket. There's every bit as much of a gap from top to bottom of FCS as FBS and there's plenty of overlap between the two. I think N. D. State would be quite competitive in the MAC or Sun Belt--the scholarship numbers and lack of depth would catch up with them over the course of the season but they'd have no trouble handling a UMass or a Kent St.
Ohio getting some decent fortune in this game.
Is that West Virgina game on DirecTV?
It's on Fox Sports 1, 219 on Directv
Found it thanks
