Eh... not to be a downer but I think football is significantly ahead of basketball in terms of recruiting (which isn't surprising at Michigan). Beilein is a great coach, the class could end up being great, but in terms of pure recruiting rankings it's extremely doubtful Michigan remains anywhere close to the top-5 (I'd guess somewhere in the 10-20 range is where we land).

Right now we have 4 commits, and the scale is HUGELY skewed towards those top players which we are not really legitimately in on in 2013. In football recruiting, i would be absolutely shocked if we fell out of the top-5. Essentially I think our football recruiting is an A+ and our basketball recruiting is more like a B+.

I don't know, Beilein recruits have typically seen their stock jump as the year goes on (and these top 3 have gone from none in the top 100 to all of them). So maybe they keep rising? It's hard to tell since there is still so much time to go. And then who knows what Austin Hatch will do coming back from his injuries. Only time will tell there

Brian wants to bash Brandon every chance he can get....but Brandon was the one who hired Hoke. Brandon was the one who completed the stadium renovations and got the new scoreboards. Brandon was also the one who lead the way on the new basketball center.

I would agree that Brady Hoke is a good timeline, but it doesn't happen over night...a lot of the things that help you in recruiting, and we're talking about recruiting here, we're here because of Brandon and the UM Athletics Staff.

The best thing Brady Hoke has done wasn't proclaim "THIS IS MICHIGAN." It was win.

I do not want to discredit Beilein in any way, as he deserves a lot of credit for the talent he's bringing in. But at the end of the day, we will not be, in my opinion, a top-5 recruiting class. I know much less about basketball recruiting than I do football, but I guess we end up somewhere in the 10-20 range, while football is almost assured a top-5 spot already. I think top 5 classes, at least these days, are for the Kentuckys, the UNCs, the Dukes, and the UCLAs. I hope to be proven wrong, though.

Granted, in your defense, I don't think we would have had an orgy of commits like we did had Michigan not beaten Ohio that night. With Gameday present, no doubt. Recruits want to know they are coming to a winning school.

Did anyone ever believe Basketball Recruiting rankings, Michigan, and #2 would ever be in the same sentence even a year or two ago? Sure its way early but very, very nice.

I used to frequently utter the following:

"did you see the latest basketball recruiting rankings? I went and checked them out on scout, and when I saw michigan's class I did a #2 in my pants."

and Hoke both A's.  Neither is at the very top in recruiting (Kentucky, UNC, Duke, etc. are still at the very top in basketball and Alabama, USC, etc. are still at the very top in football) but only a minimal step below.  Hoke has a little bit of an edge since he is pulling in some of the most elite players and is closer to the very top in recruiting BUT Beilein may not want to pull in the very top recruits due to the one-and-done rule in basketball.  And both coaches are likely sacrificing a few recruits for ethical reasons - not using shady tactics and avoiding talented players with character issues.  Longer term, this strategy may yield better teams with both character and talent.  Personally, I'm glad we don't have a Saban in football or a Pitino in basketball.  So, A's in recruting may be preferable to A+'s.
