DYNASTY: Michigan Gymnastics wins their 2nd straight NCAA Championship, 3rd in 5 years

Michigan does it again. This Michigan team started as the favorite when the season began with Olympian Sam Mikulak and an incredible supporting cast of Syque Caesar, Stacey Ervin and Konner Ackerman.

Michigan finishes the season 30-0--perfect record for the first time in 40 years and wins their SECOND STRAIGHT NCAA National Championship.

Watch the celebration on BTN right now.

Oh and by the way, Michigan

Oh and by the way, Michigan won it in front of their home crowd at Crisler Center.

You talk about the perfect season, this team is the definition of perfection.

Third Time as NCAA All-Around Champ

Won as a freshman, too.  But I bet this is his first time winning even after falling on what can be his best event.  (He won the high-bar event final in last year's championship.)

And Stacey Ervin, who tore his biceps on his first event at the Big Ten Championships, had the okay from the trainers to compete this week.  Amazing.  (And did well enough to be in the event finals tomorrow night.)  I'm assuming he only tore part of his biceps.

Past dynasties in Michigan

Past dynasties in Michigan Athletics

  • Football (4 straight National Championships from 1901-1904)
  • Men's Swimming & Diving (13 of 15 NCAA Championships from 1926-27 - 1940-41)
  • Football (back2back National Champions in 1932 & 1933)
  • Football (back2back National Champions in 1947 & 1948)
  • Hockey (6 of 9 NCAA Championships from 1947-48 - 1955-56)
  • Men's Swimming & Diving (4 of 5 NCAA Championships from 1956-57 - 1960-61)
  • Men's Gymnastics (1969 Gymnastics / 1969 & 1970 Trampoline)
  • Hockey (2 of 3 NCAA Championships from 1995-96 - 1997-98)

Keep in mind, these are just the National Championship dynasties. TONS of B1G ones if you go sport-by-sport.

Dynasties in football are

Dynasties in football are very rare. Alabama cheats.

Football has won one mythical national title in the last 60 years. It's not a priority.

Maybe since they're going to be sort of real now, they'll change that stupid mindset of winning the B1G being the ultimate goal.

Crisler Center was rockin tonight!

Very impressed by how hard all six teams pulled for all their guys.  Sam fell on the high bar right in front of me. Immediately he recomposed himself and his team just got him charged up to more than salvage a good score. He then went to the floor where he just totally redeemed himself to put an exclamation point on UM's title. A great day to be in A2. Go Blue!!

Four national titles since he has been here.  The talent coming in is as impressive as it has ever been.   It is indeed a dynasty in the making!

Really?  That's good.  How is next year looking?  Losing Miklulak will obviously be bad but two in a row and three of five should certainly allow for some incredible recruiting.

Answering my own question

Answering my own question after a little google work, VCavman24 likey what he see.  Top ranked recruiting class in the country.  That's cool.

http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-gym/spec-rel/112013aac.html

Certainly Mikulak and Caeser will be big losses, but hopefully de los Angeles can return and Ervin is big next year as well.  Three in a row?  Knock on wood.

Dave Brandon helped present the awards

When he was introduced to the crowd which was half Michigan fans, there was a no cheering, but rather a sort of nervous murmur reaction. I'm not calling it a Gary Bettman reaction, but it was uncomfortable.

This is pretty interesting. Anybody else in attendance notice this too?

I know he has his supporters, but I suspect that DB might be one of the most unpopular people on UM's campus. If he can't get cheers in Crisler while presenting awards for a Michigan national championship, that's a sure sign that he's not well-respected or liked.

exactly Don

I'm thinking that everyone wearing Maize and Blue was super pumped after a historic championship and would have cheered even Tom Izzo.

We debate on this site on DBs effectiveness, especially for the average UM fan who at times seems to be taken for granted, and more seem anti-DB than pro-DB. Some of it is his ultra business approach and some is his love of the spotlight and perceived self importance.

Personally I have mixed feelings, and may feel better when this football nightmare is over - but I found it very telling that even a gymnastics crowd was not enthusiastic towards him. Probably DB merits his own topic.

Yep, noticed it. our group

Yep, noticed it. our group was actually booing Dave Brandon in a, like a prevous comment, Gary Bettman reaction.

Last night was awesome. The crowd was amazing and helped fuel Michigan to a win.

Yeah I was being nice... I heard plenty of boos

and it was like near Bettman. A lot of women in our group were talking about Ms BD's plastic surgeries too lol. On a serious note if I see many Bettman moments coming up if Brady doesn't get this team to nine wins with a win over either MSU, OSU or  Bowl game.

Also should be mentioned that

Also should be mentioned that Chris Cameron won the all-around for Michigan in 2010.  Michigan has now won 4 of the last 5 all-around titles.  That's the beginning of a dynasty.

Sam to compete in 4 individual events today

He has a chance to become the most decorated NCAA gymnast ever. When he does I do think we begin the debate of the greatest UM athlete ever.

Unfortunately

the NCAA Individuals National Championship today is not going to be televised.  Shame on TV.

I also don't see a replay broadcast on BTN scheduled of last night's NCAA Team Championship.  I missed the first couple hours of it and failed to DVR it.  Shame on me.
