you can't call for exotic run blitzes. Defense has to call quickly and it's to keep it simple to get it lined up correctly so the players can play fast and get to the right position. Usually there's 5-7 calls in place when team goes uptempo to snap it quickly so it's not an exotic blitz because they would gash them for a big play.

You all act like he's got the best D country year in and year out.

He's a terrible fit and we can find someone just as good. He's great for VT, but their defenses are far from dominant.

I don't know about that, just because they're a P5 team doesn't mean it's higher profile. Houston has been fairly success for several years now even prior to Herman, and getting more national attention from what I've seen. How many coaches have been truly successful at Maryland for football? Honest question, but I can't think of any off the top of my head like I can for Houston. Maybe Durkin can turn it around and do what others haven't been able to. I wish him all the best (excep when playing UM of course) if he takes the job.

This may prove the point that all P5 jobs are not great.  While MD may be higher profile than Houston, if you are a good coach you may stand to do better record wise at a Houston than getting clobbered in nearly every conference game at a MD.  If he goes to MD, being above .500 on a consistent basis will be a challenge.

I can agree with that. Just seems like maybe a bigger task at MD with Harbaugh, Urbz, and Dantonio being in the same division than another stepping stone school. But there's a decent recruiting area to build some solid teams from. He's an ambitious and smart guy plus a great recruiter, could definitely see him moving up to a better P5 school (PSU??) if he does half-way decent at MD.

But the point isn't that he's going to win national titles at Maryland, althought you can do this same thought experiment with a number of schools that we now accept as part of the national conversation. All he has to do at Maryland is reel off a few 8-4 type seasons, maybe beat a couple of ranked B1G powers here and there, and he would instantly become the favorite for a better job, like PSU or Tennessee down the line.

I'm just not convinced it's a great stepping stone job.  You're stepping into a division with three coaching greats and a fourth traditional power.  what's the honest to god best case scenario at Maryland for the next few seasons?  Separate from Indiana and Rutgers, maybe win one of the other four games every other year?  7-5 year after year isn't going to get looks at better jobs.  And they're as likely, if not more likely, to crater one season as they are to be competing for a division title

If I'm being extremely optimistic, I guess MSU could start receding back to historical norms and the James Franklin era gets worse at PSU and Maryland takes claim to the third competitive program in the East.  But that's asking for a lot.

I work in the Granger/South Bend area. A few weeks ago I was talking with a consultant to our company (an older ND fan and family friends with the Mattison family). He said Greg was ready to retire until Harbaugh requested he stay to help with the transition. The money wasn't bad, either. It sounded like he was seriously considering being done after this year.

Based on that (and nothing else), I think it would take some serious convincing to get him to stay. But you never know. A Durkin departure could change his plans.

But I wouldn't be not glad to have him leave. He choked against almost every decent offense we faced. I feel like his mindset is on being a HC right now so he may as well leave.

If it's true, best of luck to him. Enjoyed watching his defense play......for the most part. Michigan is in a good position. They have Greg Mattison who can fill that role, if they can't get someone else.

Great for DJ and great for Harbaugh. Harbaugh has an amazing history of finding great coaches and those coaches getting great jobs after working for him. I'm sure if DJ leaves, Harbaugh will find someone else who is awesome and can run a great defense.

I disagree. Maryland is a decent job in a power 5 conference. Good recruiting base and lots of financial support from Under Armour given CEO is an alum. What job do you think he could get that would be better - Virginia? You are crazy if you think he could get a job like Georgia (or if LSU would have opened up). There is no way a place like that would hire an assistant coach after firing someone like Richt. What do you think reaction would have been here if Michigan hired a good assistant last year?

Why do people keep saying this?  Coordinators without head coaching experience rarely get P5 jobs.  Tom Hermann got Houston last year after being the top coordinator in the country.  Maryland is a higher profile job than Houston.  Jim Mcelwain went from top coordinator to colorado state before getting to Florida.  It took Narduzzi three years of passing up job offers to get the Pitt job he left for which is probably a worse job than MD.  This would be an amazing job to get for a coordinator with no track record and its really weird that nobody realizes this.

I'm more worried about recruiting impact than I am about playcalling issues next year if he leaves.

That's true but then again it's not that often that this many P5 jobs open up in a year.  Had Herman stayed one more year, he'd have his picking at which job he wanted for the most part.  As it's being reported now Herman to UGA is in the works.
