Submitted by tdcarl on
Just saw Dungy on PTI and they asked him about UM. However, my roomate had his music blasting so I didn't hear it. What did he have to say?

There is a lot of subtext to what he said...

Points he made:

- He is from Jackson, MI and grew up 20 miles from the Big House.

- His dad graduated from Michigan and "bled maize and blue."

- Coaching is behind him and he's happy on TV.

- He is glad Michigan hasn't called him about the coaching vacancy.

All this can be interpreted in two ways:

1. He is happy Michigan hasn't called because he doesn't want to have to tell them no because coaching is something he's no longer interested in.

or

2. He is happy Michigan hasn't called because it would be a position that would be hard to turn down, and he doesn't want to have to contemplate it. (WHICH IN ESSENCE MEANS "CALL ME MICHIGAN!"

Kind of taking it for granted that whomever becomes the next coach of UM will know how to coach football.

Theres nothing wrong with a little celebrity and positive buzz that would come with a hire of a coach of great stature (pretty much only like Gruden at this point in this realm of characters, but it would apply to most candidates).

Dungy has also compiled a list of 20 4-5 star prospects from across the country who have enough credits to graduate a year early and enroll in UM in the fall of 11.  He has also studied the 3-3-5 defense, the spread option, and the spell to direct Mary Sue Coleman to give him whatever he wants.  He is looking forward to working for U of M for free and thinks Jim Harbaugh is alcoholic loser poisoned by left coast tree hugging women.

In all honesty, I can't blame Jimbo.  It would be incredibly difficult to move back to AA with a wife who has never lived there and two kids under 2.  Plus, visitation with the kids from the first marriage has to weigh on him.  With all this, and the supposedly ugly politics awaiting him on campus, he had to do what he had to do.

I hope JH told DB all this when they talked.  If I find out later that DB fired RR in an attempt to lure JH back at the last minute, DB will have considerable explaining to do.  Where was Plan B?

Clearly he wanted to coach in the NFL. Everyone assumed that coaching at Michigan was his ultimate dream job, but that obviously isn't the case. He had the opportunity to fulfill his actual dream, and took it. Now, maybe he'll flame out in the NFL and go back to a prominent college football program, but that's not what he's doing right now. Even if he came here, his desire to coach in the NFL wouldn't have gone away. He's allowed to have different aspirations than being the Michigan football coach for life.

/overreaction to an innocuous comment

I can't stand reading everybody say that Harbaugh somehow let us all down, abandoned his family, ignored his heart's true desires, etc. Brandon made the decision to fire Rodriguez while knowing that Harbaugh didn't want to come here. Harbaugh never made noises about wanting to come here to fulfill his inner-most desires. That was Brady Hoke.

we're getting dungy or gruden.

just watched this PTI segment and was shocked at the subtext. Dungy is saying that he doesnt want to coach anymore but the temptation of michigan might be too much. he just told michigan on national tv that he's interested in the job.

The subtext is amazing. Tony Dungy of all people would strongly consider Michigan, despite not wanting to coach. Even if he doesn't take it, or isn't seriously interested in it, this is a huge endorsement of our program. Especially for a "regional power."

Wouldn't be at all surprised if there was an announcement or introduction Sunday...

Who is the big question, but my gut says they want to have it done fast, and that is a great opportunity to make a splash.

good idea, lets immedaitely expose the new coach to losing by introducing him at halftime in what will surely be a blowout against the Jayhawks.  I certainly hope it is not but i wouldnt hold your breath.

According to annarbor.com the following is the transcript:

Dungy: They did not. (laughing) And I’m kind of glad. I grew up about 20 miles from there. And my dad is a big, big Michigan man. But I’m glad they didn’t call me.

Patrick: But what if they do call?

Dungy: If they call, I would have some recommendations for them of other guys that would do a great job for them. (more laughing)

ON the DP show today, DP was talking about the same quotes from Dungy, and I took his comments to mean that he doesnt want DB to call because it would mean he would be put in a situation where he would have to seriously consider going back to coaching.

While I would love to have Dungy coaching for us, my soul dong cant handle putting too much stock in his becoming our coach.

Patterson, come on down!
