Duke vs. MSU - Who Do You Pull For?

Submitted by Everyone Murders on

In addition to Friday's tilt with Michigan playing Kansas, we'll all be keeping an eye on the MSU vs. Duke game.  For many of us it's a classic meteor game, with the upside being that one of them has to lose, but I thought the board might like to sound off on who to pull for.

I've pretty quickly concluded that I'll pinch my nose and pull for MSU.  Partially for Big Ten pride, partially because I have a modicum of respect for the job Izzo's done (even if much of it was done via low-hanging fruit from the Ed Martin bushwa), and part of it because I know some pretty decent MSU fans.  But mostly because I have an almost pathological dislike for Duke and the bulk of their fans.

I first came to dislike Duke because of Christian Laettner.  I read a story in SI way back when where Cherokee Parks came to Laettner's dorm room on a visit, and Laettner cold-cocked him - and followed it up with screaming at Parks about how tough you need to be to play for Duke.  At the time I thought "this guy Laettner sounds like a total jackass" and nothing I've seen since changes that view.  A talented jackass to be sure, but a jackass.

And then there's Krzyzewski.  When I was a kid, I bought into the "he's a class act and does things the 'right way'" image that's hard to get away from even these days.  As I got older, I learned to dislike the cult built around him - it's an almost pre-Sandusky Paterno cult of personality.  He's been successful, but seems like a weasel most times I see him.  From his whinging about fans rushing the court after losing to VA, to his talking about recruiting kids with "character" but somehow overlooking recruiting areas like Detroit (Shane Battier doesn't count - Detroit Country Day sure isn't Detroit!), to defending thuggish moves from the likes of Gerald Henderson, to the American Express ad, and on and on.

And the Duke fans are generally wretched.  Anyone who jaws about "Michigan Arrogance" or "Domer Arrogance" likely has not seen the pinnacle of douchebaggery.  Whether they chanted about NC State's player's grandmother's death or not - the fact that it was believable to many spoke volumes.

(I have some respect for a few Duke alumns - Grant Hill, Tommy Amaker, and several on the academic side of the equation.  But if Coach K. and Laettner are going to be your poster children, well - that's your poster.)

So yeah - MSU fans may have a large juggalo contingent, wear a bunch of Axe, burn upholstered furniture at bad times, and paint numbers on their chest representing days since U-M won in basketball right before they lose on national TV.  But I'll be grudgingly pulling for them on Friday.

Who are you pulling for, and why?

There's a lenghty mathematical argument that I could make that would say it is a bit of a wash in this tournament, but for the sake of one of my sole remaining competitive bracket (as in, in the top three in one pool), it is fair to say that I have a financial interest in Michigan State winning. On the other hand, I have one bracket that is 7th in a pool and goes with Duke, so really, I'd go with MSU for the currently more optimistic cash picture, in my case.

Well, I'll mention the math anyway - I calculated the estimated probabilities of Michigan's hypothetical paths to a title using some of the numbers from Massey, and for the most part, the MSU and Duke paths work out to numbers with 0.5% of one another, so the people choosing the "asteroid / sinkhole" route have a point as well if we're simply talking about the Tournament itself.

I will cheer for Duke for a number of reasons.

1.  I can never cheer for Sparty unless Michigan directly benefits from their winning.

2.  Sparty and Michigan compete for area recruits.  Every time one team wins, it hurts the other.

3.  Duke and Sparty are both arrogant and entitled.  Duke has 4 National Championships under K; Sparty has one under Izzo.  Duke has earned the right to be arrogant; Sparty hasn't.

4.  Duke defines itself by championships.  MSU defines itself by hatred for Michigan.

5.  Most of all, I'm just going to have to admit that I love to see Sparty suffer.

For the record, Coach K didn't whine about fans rushing the court. He was asked a direct question about it by a reporter, and gave the same response every coach would give.

The chant was "past your bedtime".

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of shitty entitled douchebags here (myself included), but sometimes its just so easy to get the facts wrong.

MSU, but only because I am still very alive in my money pools and I have them going to the elite 8.  I probably won't watch the game, though, until the end because these are probably my least 2 favorite teams in college basketball.

I have to root for Sparty.  They just don't have much going for them right now, so I'd like to see them get something, if only for their self-esteem.  It's not like they're a threat to win the championship or anything.

I'll pull for Sparty.  The idea of an all B1G Final Four is compelling.

If we lose...... I won't watch one second of their game.  Fuck them both.

problems for Duke to actually win), but Duke because I live in NC and am actually much more annoyed by UNC and NC State fans than Duke fans ("y'all, they all went back north, y'all!!!!")  I kind of like watching everyone's head explode when Duke wins since I have no real ACC rooting interest.

Hey, I always root for the Big Ten, especially in the tournament. Plus I have this one bracket - started out as my "goofy heartfelt desire bracket" that places MSU, OSU, Indiana and Meeeeeeechigan in the Final Four. Hey - I'm in the lead in my pool right now with that one. Ain't stopping now!

Grew up in A2 and a Michigan alum, but I still loved the Flint-stones. Duke is Christian laetner, JJ Redick, Bobby Hurley, Greg Paulson, and Krzyzewski.  Izzo runs a good program.

I picked Duke so it helps me against the people with like picks by maybe giving me an edge against them, but MSU winning actually hurts my pool leaders worse.  So however it falls out, it's going to hurt/help.

Frankly, I just look at the bright side that at least one team I really hate is going to lose Friday night.
