Duke "91-92" documentary on TruTV trashing Fab Five

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Left my TV on truTV after hardcore brackets. Thought it would be kind of interesting to hear what the dukies were gonna say. They just went to a commercial break talking about "the most overrated team was next for duke" and they showed Jalen.

The film is apparently produced by Grant Hill.

That Grant and Christian had to produce it themselves as a "what about us?!?" is kinda sad. Even Bobby "fired because I assaulted a student" Knight got in on the action from what I read. But obviously from the Nework, no one cares.

Any bets that it ends with a giant loan scheme and massive debt for one of the producers? Yeah, didn't think so.

Does that even make sense?  I don't doubt that he said it, but that statement isn't logical.  If Mich was overrated then they shouldn't have won, or it should be "the best team to never win anything."   I think.

from Knight about the Fab Five's on-court legacy* was this:

"What did they win? They didn't win anything," Knight told WBTV's Tom Roussey. "They talked about tearing down their banners, what the hell banners did they have? They didn't even win a Big 10 championship."

*he had plenty to say about their legacy off the court, which, like...yeah. Out of all the people to talk about off-court legacies in college basketball, it's Bobby Knight.

Basically, Jalen made a fantastic film about his time in college and yea they kind of ripped Duke and Grant Hill a little bit. Grant Hill either decides to or is approached by someone to make a movie as well. Jalen's Fab Five film was pushed and advertised almost a month before airing all over ESPN media entities and was talked about for weeks after airing. Grant Hill's flick was on TruTv (lol) and ya I haven't heard about it since 5 minutes ago.

The problem I have with this is that the Fab Five documentary didn't really rip on Duke to the extent that it was received. Jalen, Juwan, Jimmy and Ray explained how they felt about Duke when they were like 18 years old, not how they feel about them now.

Jimmy said he thought Laettner was "a bitch," but then when they got on the court they respected his game. Furthermore, Jalen just said that he didn't like Duke because they wouldn't recruit black players like him, but they would recruit players like Grant Hill. It wasn't an attack on Hill, it was more of an attack on Duke and the system of recruiting than anything.

I only watched a couple minutes. But those minutes were terrible and they didn't get it. Jalen said bad things in his movie but he said "I thought", the implication is he learned as he grew up. Nothing he said should have offended. But the Dukies movie signs off with Hurley saying I'm a regular guy, but with two rings. They do a montage to "I love to hate you" and all I could think was how they don't get to this day why they are hated at all. Where as Jalen has grown up to be very aware of his surroundings and perceptions. Win for Fab Five finally

I think it's hard to be overrated when you go to back-to-back Final Fours. And I don't recall anybody mentioning the Fab Five when it comes to the best teams of all itme. They're on the list for most talented and most impactful teams, but not the best. People don't care about Duke. They only care when Duke loses, so nobody but Duke fans are going to watch this.

And Christian Laettner and Grant Hill are bitches.

When it came to comparing the Fab Five to Duke, They should have just shown the scoreboard, the scores of the games and then moved on.  It's getting so old.  We get it, Michigan cheated, they didn't win anything, they had black socks, they couldn't afford a hamburger while on campus.   Yawn.   Time to move on, nobody cares about the Dukies or the Fab Five.
