Now is the time to bury them.  Look at what ND did to them in their house.  Look at how poorly they run the ball.  This is not a team that should stick around with us.  Can't wait until Saturday.......

Yeah, have you?

We've had a 100 yard rusher in 2 games (one of them against a GREAT Florida defense) and then Chris Evans had 85 yards against Purdue.

LOL okay... when you look at overall numbers it looks OK, kind of like MSU's defense. But we aren't running the ball consistently well, we just break off a big run or two every game. Michigan's RBs rushed for 155 yards against Purdue. Remove the 49 yard TD run by Evans and it's 106 yards on 37 carries, or 2.9 ypc. Against Purdue.

I think everyone would take that, but your example is hitting big plays on 33% of your rushing attempts and averaging over 11 yards per carry... we're nowhere close to that. Evans had one 49 yard run, and the other 37 rushing attempts by running backs averaged less than 2.9 yards per carry. My point was, we have one or two big runs a game that are making the rushing totals look decent but masking a run game that as a whole is not very good right now.

This is the 2012 game edition of this feature.

Side note: I really can't believe how consistently bad the State News columns are every year. It's like Bobby Williams is the their editor-in-chief.

That perpetuates MSU’s inferiority complex and disrespect attitude. It’s a vicious cycle. I truly believe that the community of the state of Michigan as whole suffers when an institution breeds a culture of “We are disrespected and it’s us against the world. And fuck Michigan!” Coming from a non-native of Michigan, it is really noticeable.

and I use spell check and all that and still make typos every day...but I don't publish anything (save blog posts) without having at least one other person read it to make sure it makes sense and is coherent.  Why does the State News do this to themselves every year?

My favorite line...

Editor’s note: This column is subject to the editing team and style guide of The State News. The Daily has published it as presented.

The Michigan one was well-written but didn't have the edge of prior editions.

The MSU piece was by far the worst edition that I can recall reading. The general sentiment was "I lost and will continue to lose but it's only because I didn't care or even want to win in retrospect". It is a favorite among 8-11 year old childen.

Both of those were uncomfortable; the MSU one was just bad.  If these aren't at least a little tongue-in-cheek (both of these were absurdly serious), there's no point in having this feature.

Well, that's changed quite a bit over the years and seems to be quite a bit more focused on the papers themselves. Kudos to the state writer who apparently has no issue fully embodying the stereotype of little bro and DISRESPEKT.

Seems like I forget about this gem every year until it gets posted here.

I will say this year's edition was below our usual standards - a bit too much time on the touch football game and not enough on the obvious superiority of our student newspaper.

But the State News column was joyous in that it was so incredibly pathetic. Little Brother and Bobby WIlliams rolled up in a whiney self-fullfilling prophecy of losing. Just beautiful in the same way a 2nd grader's violin concert is; Cute for what it is, but far from being anything of artistic merit.

Watching From Afar

Full disclosure time: I grew up in East Lansing, as a Michigan fan, and graduated from MSU. My older siblings went to UofM, as did my father. My first 20 some college football games were at the Big House. I didn't attend a MSU game until I was in high school.

I was deferred, then waitlisted at Michigan, so I ended up at MSU because I had a parent who worked at State which allowed me to get 1/2 off tuition - a large amount of money that neither me, nor my hardworking parents would have to pay. I worked ushering for MSU games to make a little money (and attend free football games) so I think I might have a little different perspective than most in this rivalry as I lived with MSU fans for 4 years (and am still friends with many of them) but I would go to Ann Arbor to watch Michigan games with my dad instead of going to MSU games on occasion. I've lived "behind enemy lines" so to speak and have seen how both sides carry themselves on a daily basis, not just during 1 Saturday in the fall.

When I got to MSU I thought, maybe, I'd grow to root for MSU. Growing up my dad always told me to root for them 10 times a year, but never when they played Michigan. The better they do, the better for the whole State of Michigan. After graduating from MSU I can tell you, I never root for them now. There are bad fans in every base. Michigan, MSU, OSU, Alabama etc. All of them have absolute assholes who should be kicked out of their stadiums and shunned for being terrible human beings who take a sport and turn it into a class-like us versus them societal issue. But that being said, MSU is disproportionately asshole.

I have rarely met a MSU fan that, given time, didn't turn me off. Even my friends are assholes sometimes. My parents (homerism) are the nicest people I know. They would bring me and my roommates cookies, beer, buy us things for our house, invite my friends over for dinner at their home in EL etc. So whenever Michigan came up, I could never understand how those same people could say "Fuck Michigan. Anyone who went there is an arrogant asshole who thinks they're better than us. Their women are ugly cows and they're all the biggest assholes. I'm better than them!" I know they were generalizing, but could you maybe not say those kinds of things about my parents and siblings? People who you know and have done very nice things for you while never once throwing it in your face?

I've had shit thrown at me for wearing blue jackets (with no Michigan symbols on them) because people thought I was a ND fan while ushering FOR MSU. I've heard people talk about breaking "that ni**er Denard's leg" before and I've seen the student section yell and scream at a family of a North Colorado player who came to EL to watch their son play.

Needless to say, everything that was written in the Daily column is what I've experienced. Not just once a year during a football game, but daily.

While I hold my tongue and rarely say a mean or vitrol thing to MSU fans (it's a football game/college - grand scheme of things it's not that big of a deal), I just can't stand to listen to them ignorantly vilify an entire group of people based off of who they root for/where they went to school. Are there those that do the same thing who root for Michigan? Absolutely. But having gone to Michigan games since i was 7, spending my summers with my siblings in Ann Arbor, and then living on MSU's campus for 4 years, I can say not nearly to the same extent. Especially when you consider Mcihigan fans outnumber MSU fans by, probably, 50%.

The dueling columns are a great tradition and while I identify with the Daily's more because of my personal life, neither are very good and are missing the point of these now.
