DRob - The new Tyrod Taylor?

Wondered what the opinions are on this article suggesting Borges could use the experience of Tyrod Taylor (VT) as how to utilize Denard this year.

I didn't see enough of TT to know if this is a good idea or not, but maybe others did.

Agreed Taylor is better passer right now, but look at the gains Robinson made over last offseason. If he can make similar gains this offseason, we might have to reevaluate this comparision come next fall.

And just for the record, I agree with everyone else and their brothers that Shoelace is the better athlete.

Most of Denard's big passes were because the offense was set up to give him wide open receivers. We'll see how he does this year and then evaluations can be made.

I agree with most of what you say, but I don't really like the argument about Denard's passes being wide open. First I can only think of a handful of passes where the WR was truly wide open. It probably was more the lack of deep help and stacking the box that resulted in more passes going for longer yardage. But don't traditional attacks also use the run to get their WRs wide open? Would you discredit Andrew Luck's passing ability because they used play action a lot?

Definitely. Denard's running ability afforded him the privilege to throw to receivers who were wide open. Someone posted about this offense really focusing on roll outs with Denard to give him the throw/run option which I think will give him some of the same opportunities as last year with regards to open men but we'll have to see what transpires that first game. Nonetheless it's going to be extremely exciting.

Another good question is Taylor's pro prospects. Will he end up being like Denard?  Robinson will play in the NFL as a quarterback if he stays injury free. I have no doubt.  As long as that is something he wants for his future, it will happen.

I sort of agree that D-Rob will stand a chance as an NFL qb... as long as he is given a chance. I don't think he will ever get a big contract as a qb, b/c NFL owners would not want to see their qb taking that many hits. While I am sure his passing will improve further as he now works in a more pro-style offense, I still think his legs are what get him the NFL opportunity. I realize this is a wishy-washy position to take, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out in a couple years. If he becomes a beastly qb in a pro-style offense in college, how high will the NFL draft him?

Taylor was 23TD/5INT this year. Now this is not to say that Taylor is even close to the runner Denard is, but he has improved a ton in passing over the last couple years.

several of them in person. Denard Robinson was a much better passer this past year than Taylor was as a sophomore, though in Taylor's defense, he was working with an entirely new corps of receivers and playing behind a very suspect offensive line. Michigan's offensive line in 2010 might have been better than any offensive line Taylor ever had-- VT missed badly on offensive line recruits from 2004 to 2006, and paid a price for it up front against more athletic defenses. Taylor only played as a true freshman in 2007 because the offensive line was so bad that his scrambling was VT's best hope of fielding a running game. He matured tremendously as a passer over his last two seasons.

Athletically, there are obvious similarities, and a few key differences-- Denard has better straight-line speed and lateral quickness, Taylor probably has better arm strength and better accuracy when he's on the move. From the pocket, I actually think Denard's more accurate. VT gave Taylor plenty of rollouts and option passes to get him out of the pocket, because he struggled finding throwing lanes at times. VT also never had to run Taylor as much during his last three seasons, because they had first-class talent at tailback(Darren Evans, Ryan Williams, etc.)  One of the things Hoke and company are going to have to do is find somebody who can take the load off Robinson in the running game. Once they find that player and learn how he can be used most effectively, they'll have a much better idea of how to fit Robinson's running ability into the system. It wouldn't surprise me if they kept some of the designed QB runs and zone-read stuff, but they'll likely use them as changeups against the defense, instead of as the base of the offense.

To paraphrase Shakespeare: "The miserable have no medicine but only Hoke."

do not think tyrod taylor has a stronger arm and the accuracy might be close. The pass in the bowl game where he lead Odoms to the corner for a TD makes me think he can fit into a pro style offense.

As such, him seeing every throw of Taylor's career means his opinion carries far more weight, and yours carries hardly any in the context of such a debate between the two of you, at least to an outside observer (me). Just sayin.

whats your guys thought on how the team will go in the future? if Denard and Gardener both suceed as mobile QBs in a prostyle you think the coaches will try to stick with that formula and stay with that style QB or will they go back to getting the Mallet type QBs

I was actually in Miami when they played V Tech.  Taylor looked pretty average to me in that game.

Taylor has never had a passing percentage above 60% in his career.  Yes, I'll agree Taylor may be a bit better in his decision making and throwing than Denard, but if you ask me they are pretty damn even.

For everyone that says Denard had a 62% completion percentage because his running ability, so what? I can remember a great deal of throws that Denard had to put on the money during the entire year.  Look at the RB production that Taylor got versus what Denard had this past year.

I just hope that Denard can continue to work on his throwing motion and hopefully get some production from the RBs so he isn't banged up going into the Big Ten schedule.

I don't really see the comparison. They're both mobile quarterbacks? Okay, but Denard is one of the fastest kids in the country, and is already a pretty decent passer. This seems like journalism for the sake of journalism, not really anything to put much stock into.

Denard as a passer has a naturally stronger arm and a quicker release than Tyrod. I think as of this moment only experience stands between them as an advantage to TT.

Denard is both faster & more illusive with the most explosive 1st step I've seen since Tony Dorsett was at Pitt. TT is stronger on his feet & in general harder to bring down but thats his only edge IMHO.

Either was Denard's upside looks to be a mile higher than TT's.

First of all he suggests that DR might not be the 2011 M qb unless he can make the transition under Borges. What he fails to say is that our other option is Devin Gardner who would have even more difficulty transitioning into Borges' type offense inasmuch as he's run the spread option in both h.s. and under RR.

Speculation, based on DG's proven ability to throw the long ball and his prototypical size for an NFL qb, might suggest that when all is said and done, he'll be recognized as a "must get" for some NFL team in need of a qb. But all throws to date have been against h.s. dbs, and as a result it's quite a leap, in my opinion, to suggest that DG has even a remote chance of taking the starting job away from Denard in what would amount to his first year as a D1 qb.

Because Brandon has indicated he isn't going to allow someone to transition while losing, Hoke and Borges will be forced to play the qb that gives UM the greatest chance of winning this season, not in future years.  All anyone has to do is ask themselves who that person is and answer it honestly to know who will be running the offense for UM the next two years.

He doesn't even mention that DR has a great love for the position, as a sponge when it comes to absorbing the nuances of even a much more sophisticated offense - all borne out by his tremendous improvement from a virtual "Do what you can" as a freshman - and the most important attribute that any offensive leader can possess. That, of course, is the fact that his teammates beleive DR is their leader, and he's proven to be so.

The young man is the most talented athlete we've ever had at UM and an accuracy increase of roughly 25% in regard to his passing skills indicate he'll be able to run any offense he's assigned to do so as a college qb.

With that said, Borges, or any OC for that matter, would be quite foolish not to design a number of plays w/in the "Pro style system" that feature play action sprint outs.  Both of our qbs are extremely mobile and these type of plays not only cause the DL to become tired due to pursuit angles, but would also allow either of these two to decide if they want to run for five yards on every play and move the chains or when their receivers are simply too wide open to ignore to simply put some air under the ball and get 6 now.

Spath, like all paid monitors has to fill space to generate an exchange of opinions amongst his paying audience. There really should be no question in any one's mind, after having watched DR for what amounts to only one year of Big Ten fb whether or not he'll make the necessary adjustments. Hell, this is "cake" for him compared to all the reads he had to make under the read option attack, in which he more than proven himself.
