Drevno expects Rudock to play against Rutgers

Submitted by RogueRage on

Michigan QB Jake Rudock is "absolutely" expected to play this week says OC Tim Drevno. "He looked good to me" in practice yesterday, Drevno said.

getting 2014 Rudock, or something close to it.  The difference is that Iowa had a more productive rushing attack.  We need improvement there, because without it, Jake is always having to throw on 2nd or 3rd and long, when the D expects it.  I am a big fan of throwing on 1st down, for that reason.

I mean, you're comparing a guy who has already won a superbowl and was two yards away from another to a guy who would be lucky to get looked at at all by the NFL.

There's juuuuuuust a bit of a talent gap there.

And I love Rudock and feel like he gets way too much crap from people here. I, too, wish our QB situation was better. But it's not. We have to accept it.

I mean, what did we want out of Rudock? A game-manager type QB. Just don't lose us the game, guy. Hit a big play every now and then.

What have we got? Well, early-season INTs were a bit alarming, but he's calmed down significantly in the turnover department (neither turnover against Minnesota was that alarming, though the shovel pass was definitely an ill-advised risk). As for the long balls? yeah, it's upsetting he hasn't hit one...but he's still leading an offense that's putting up points. He led the offense to 21 through 3 quarters...I don't give a shit how many yards he does or doesn't have, I just want the points. How many points did we put up against Minnesota last year? 14, total. And 7 of those was from a 4-play 47-yard drive of exclusively runs. Morris and Gardner threw for a combined...wait for it.....88 yards. Total. Super terrible no good Rudock threw for 140 in roughly 2 1/2 quarters of action before injured.

I mean, it's like people forget how turrible we were last year, and that was an offense with a 5th year QB (who was inexplicably benched in hindsight), a clear #1 receiving threat, and basically the same running back corps we are using now. He wasn't going to come in and magically fix all our problems. Perhaps we were a bit arrogant to think he would be significantly better than this. I mean, he basically led the offense to do just enough against MSU to actually win the game before they didn't on the gift 6. And that was with a barely extant run attack in the game, if you could even say that.

I get the criticism, I don't get the constant need to bash and downplay a guy who, despite all his faults to this point, is very clearly an important leader to this team and the coaches, and is still very clearly the #1 guy.

I welcomed Rudock, anticipating a competent game manager capable of making some plays with his legs, and throwing an accurate long ball - based on the extensive analysis done on this site, and watching Iowa game film.  I understand the new-offense factor, and thus a shaky start, but I don't understand the lack of downfield accuracy relative to his past, and over halfway through the season.

How do you know that he's still very clearly the #1 guy?  Comparing him to last year doesn't substantiate much.  Protecting the ball is huge and should not be downplayed, but the lack of long ball accuracy limits the offense beyond the obvious big play.

Especially with an excellent defens, I'll take an additional big play TD (and the running game benefit that comes with that threat) at the expense of an additional INT - assuming Speight is more TO-prone, which we don't know, but might if he were to get some non-garbage time.

Game management will beat most teams on the schedule.  To beat the really good teams you need to be firing on as many offensive cylinders as possible, and hope TOs are minimal.

you sure seem to have alot of insight into a player you only watch on saturdays. i will leave it up to the coaches to decide if he is "regressing" weekly as you seem so sure he is doing. harbaugh seems pleased with him, but then again he is only the coach. he wouldnt have the same  understanding of his abilities as you would.

I don't know why you guys get so bent out of shape about this stuff. Like I said, we are lucky to have him.

But the stats don't lie...he threw for over 4,800 yards in the past 2 seasons and went 34-18 TD-INT. This year he's sitting at 1,440 yards and 6-7 TD-INT.

Again, not bashing the kid, but the numbers are hard to argue against.

to check out how Jake did and see the hit he took that knocked him out.

On the 3 TD drives he was in for, his passes looked pretty good and they weren't a bunch of dink throws.  I don't think any of the throws were over 25 yards or so and they were pretty crisp.  He looked about as sharp as he has all year.  When watching the game live, I don't remember thinking much about his passes.  Preconceived notions at this point, I guess.

As for the hit that sent him to the bench, his neck and left shoulder seemed to take the worst of it.  So, given he's a righty, I don't think anything directly involved in throwing a football got affected.  I can imagine he felt pretty scrambled and sore, so that's why he didn't think it was a good idea to come back into the game which deserves credit.

I honestly think he's hurt.  Maybe nothing serious, but it's enough to impact his game.

I mean, what is the longest pass he's thrown accurately this year?  I don't know because there haven't been any worth remembering.

How do you know it's not even close? Based off the last game? Sure Harbaugh said that at the beginning of the season, but (a) that could have been at least in part showing support for Rudock, and (b) maybe he also said that with the hope that he would start finally hitting some big plays. Ultimately, I trust the coaching staff and agree that everyone always wants the back-up akin to the grass is always greener; however, I don't buy that you know "it's not even close."

Eh, if there is one person that fans would love more than their world-class coach, it is the backup QB. We know what Harbaugh can do, and it is win. There is no telling what Speight can do. Hell, maybe he can even win?!

I'm on mobile so starting threads and embedding tweets is difficult. Someone want to post Harbaugh's reminder to not be idiots on Twitter?

Dear Coach Harbaugh:

Respectually sir, good fucking luck with that one.  The idiots on twitter who do this all feel they are god's special snowflake and possess the self-awareness and control of a starving baboon in heat.  Every month or two the same admonishment is posted here only to fall on the deaf ears of the mouth breathers who think tweeting college kids is somehow "helping" the cause.  And we have as much success stopping these morons as you unfortunately will.

Sincerely,

That's definitely good news, but even better, an indication that what happened in the Minnesota game wasn't too serious fortunately, at least that's how it looks to me. I was admittedly a little uneasy because it seemed like there was almost total silence on his status for a bit, but definitely glad to hear that he will be good to go.

I would rather start His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Wilton Speight, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the Gopher Empire in America in General and Michigan in Particular.

It's good to hear that Jake is healthy enough to play. And I trust this staff enough to actually believe them. I'm sure if he was still hurting, they would have no issues giving Wilton the reigns.

I'd love to see Speight start. See what we have in him. If he struggles then put Rudock in. I don't see that as too big a gamble cuz we're home with Rutgers. If he's no better, nothing lost. A little fire under Rudock may be a good thing. It would be a chance to see meaningful snaps from Speight, and maybe he lights it up. At a minimum we'd be all the better should Rudock get dinged again. I know, "coach knows best", which is why it might happen?

Say actually Speight starts and he plays well (e.g. 14/21, 220 yds, 2 tds). Against Rutgers, one of the worst dumpster fire teams in the conference, is that really meaningful enough to conclude Speight is the better option over Rudock?
