Drake Johnson has knee surgery
I haven't seen this one posted yet, but thought I'd share. 247 reporting that Drake had surgery, I think this morning, on his knee injured vs osu. They say he'll most likely miss Spring ball, but should be okay for the 2015 season.
As one of the few bright spots from this year's team, I hope he makes a full recovery.

Hear Hear! Get well soon Drake.

Imagine Drake Johnson in an offense where everyone on the defense doesn't know exactly where he is going. One way or another, it is going to happen.

Would have thought that he would have had the surgery weeks ago, maybe a couple days after the injury. Hope that he is able to be ready for fall camp.

Often times they have to wait for swelling to go down before performing surgery. It's not like you tear it and get it operated on the next day. It takes time to get to a point where surgery is possible.

I think Fitz Toussaint's situation gave us a false impression of how quickly these things can get done. He went out in the second quarter against Iowa and was finished with surgery before the game was over.
But I guess a second ACL is different than getting your ankle reeattached.

Bones also usually heal more easily. I definitely don't need to be reminded how awful Fitz' broken leg looked, but I'd almost always rather break a bone than tear something.

As @GoBlueInIowa mentioned, you have to wait for the swelling within the knee to go down before surgery. Typically 3-4 weeks is the sweet spot for surgery.
Here's to hoping that it was a clean ACL tear and that there are no issues with the meniscus or any other ligaments.
December 19th, 2014 at 11:51 AM ^
Meniscus maybe, but if it were a multi-ligament tear it would have been repaired much more quickly.
December 19th, 2014 at 12:37 PM ^
Why would it be done more quickly? The more you tear, the greater the amount of swelling if anything.
December 19th, 2014 at 10:37 AM ^
Not suprising since he ripped that thing in peices during the Ohio game.

Hopefully Green, Hill, Peppers, and Morgan are recovering well too.

In Friday Posbang by me.

I missed it. In my defense, I never really read the POSBANG threads. I just upvote and look at the funny gifs and memes.

In my experience with these things - especially if it is a re-injury... the MRI can be confusing since now there are potential interfering variables like scar tissue from the previous. Not totally out of the ordinary that they waited this long.
December 19th, 2014 at 10:59 AM ^
Usually delayed to let the swelling go down. And then he had finals to take care of.

Not U-M, but same thing happened with Mariano Rivera in 2012 when he tore his ACL. Seems like standard protocol for these injuries

Get well Drake

As someone who has torn his ACL twice, unfortunately I think his career is probably over.
December 19th, 2014 at 11:16 AM ^
I tore the same ACL twice, unless surgery repair has drastically improved in the last 7 years I would agree. I went to a highly respected medical sports group that works on college and professional athletes. Hope he proves us wrong. Get well Drake, you were the best RB I have seen in a long time.
December 19th, 2014 at 12:39 PM ^
But did you undergo the kind of rehab regimen that he will?
December 19th, 2014 at 12:00 PM ^
with Drake, but that is my worry as well. He's definitely going to be fighting an uphill battle with his recovery and rehab. It's going to make our RB recruiting for 2015 and 2016 all the more important I think. I'm hoping that someone like Jim H will be able to pull Mike Weber back away from the Evil Empire.

I still think about how he was more or less put into games late in the season and was immediately effective, even to the point of this being one of my bones of contention with the staff and measuring talent. I really did enjoy Johnson's contributions to this team and his flashes of Mike Hart-ish second effort and movement.
Hopefully, his recovery is full and speedy and we get a chance to see more of him next year.
December 19th, 2014 at 11:40 AM ^
because even with all the injuries UM still had enough talent on the field to beat the likes of Rutgers and Maryland, and get at least take one of three from ND, Utah and Minnesota. Maybe with fewer injuries we do all that but take 2 of 3.
However I think lost in all the Brandon-Hoke hysteria was how many injuries the team had. Drake Harris may have been a contributor, I don't think Devin was ever right, plus the aforementioned Morgan, Peppers and Green. It was just a terrible season all around, top to bottom, east to west.
December 19th, 2014 at 2:54 PM ^
The fact that Hoke & Co. failed to recognize who the BEST RB on the roster was, for almost an entire season, and did not play him due to his recruiting ranking...shows how inept he and his staff are in evaluating talent.
Injuries are no excuse for incompetent coaching. Every team has them. Hell, they lucked in to Drake Johnson via injuries to other players.
December 19th, 2014 at 11:42 AM ^
Your experience is not encouraging and, should that be the case with Drake, it would really be a shame for all of us. The kid committed to UM as soon as he was offered and was low on the deep list until he proved his talents to the coaches.
And then.........we was stunning in his first game with a fantastic future in store, but then the second injury.
But query........how intensive were your rehab programs the second time around? Were they similar to what we might expect for Drake at UM?
I just hope he comes back.

Here is wishes for a speedy recovery. I like his running style above the other backs in your stable and think he can be a really good one.
December 19th, 2014 at 12:46 PM ^
I would have loved to see him healthy to start the season. I love his cut-back ability, which we don't see in all of our backs.
December 19th, 2014 at 12:54 PM ^
I hope he's well enough to start the 2015 season.
December 19th, 2014 at 1:53 PM ^
I know that you can do it again.
December 19th, 2014 at 2:05 PM ^
Take care, Drake.
December 19th, 2014 at 2:06 PM ^
Get well soon.
December 19th, 2014 at 2:51 PM ^
Drake is a great example of how the recruiting rankings are BS when it comes to evaluating most RBs. He obviously is a FAR better back than Green or Smith... faster, more elusive, better vision and burst and better power. He also is a better pass catcher and showed that he can throw the ball too.
No other big time program recruited Drake out of HS...why? Because the league he played in. He is one of the state of Michigan's all time HS RBs and no one wanted him. Sounds a lot like Mike Hart doesnt it?
Drake is currently the best RB on the roster, if healthy. Perhaps Ty Issac is on his level too.. based on his flashes at USC, he may well be.
Lets hope so, because the other RBs on the roster are far below in terms of talent, ability and desire.
Get well soon Drake.

Hope THE DRAKE gets well soon, Harbaugh will need him
