Down in front

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

do you hear this as much anymore at the Big House? I haven't heard it in a long time.

I remember when was a hot button issue among fans. While I'm at it, if you have any stories about a down in front experience, please

And this is why there are problems in the stands now. If you're the only person standing on your section and you're yelling at everyone behind you, you're doing it wrong.

These threads don't seem to take common courtesy into account. And the fact that not everyone in the stadium is a twenty-something who doesn't realize they're not in the student section anymore.

If you're the only person standing in your section on a huge 3rd down play, I'd argue your section is doing it wrong.  To be fair, I just graduated a week ago so my only experience is in the student section, but you'd think the majority of the stadium would want to get up for the game changing moments

There's a reason people call it, "the quietest 110,000 people in the country".

We're literally one the calmest fan-bases in the country.

It's just the culture. It's so civil. Remember the statistic about how  UM-Football season-ticket-holders are outliers in their likelihood of purchasing/attending any other sporting event?

I sort of like it though. UofM  IS a VERY NERDY school let's not forget!

But, like anything extreme, it sort of goes both ways. On one hand I'd love for more energy and noise to cheer on the team. On the other, I really enjoy being able to sit-down, watch the game, and having intelligent/entertaining/funny conversations with other fans in the stadium, and not having to yell just to communicate the entire time.

I've always found the absurdly civil atmostphere kind of charming!

No but I'm willing to bet a person standing is a lot more hype about a game than a person sitting.

The lack of excitement is dissappointing in the other sections of the Big House compared to other stadiums in the country. (Night games are the exception; everyone is excited for those)

Then you are probably the type to stand up in a big 3rd down play too. That's all most of us are asking for. Cheer the team and get up and make some noise on big plays. How do some of all these people "not able to stand up even occasionally" even make it into the stadium. I would think the stairs are too much.

The architecture argument was always non-sensical. Notre Dame Stadium had the exact same blueprint as the pre-skybox Michigan Stadium (obviously just on a smaller scale) and was significantly louder.

"The architectural problem...
...isn't the skybox, it is the shallow bowl geometry.  We analyzed it in our graduate architectural acoustics class with Dr. Moji Navvab.  Notre Dame Stadium, while smaller, has steeper sides which keep more noise within the stadium."
That, and the fact that there's nothing else to do in South Bend so the noise just stays in in the stadium

TheFrigz,

Keep in mind that my father who has been attending games in person for 60 seasons has a rare form of cancer that has caused him to have 3 knee surgeries and while the golf cart taking us to our seats from the parking space is nice, he cannot stand up anymore. He would love to, but he can't. I OTOH do stand when those in front of me are standing like on big 3rd downs.

I hope I don't sound rude here, but handicap seats are perfect for this. My grandpa just turned in two of his season tickets for 2 handicap ones and he loves it. He can see the scoreboard easier (bad eyesight) and doesn't have to worry about standing. Plus he has better access to the concourse because he doesn't have to worry about stairs.

I used to attend every game with my father, who was also an alumni. He did not stand up real quick and could not stay standing for that long. So no, he was not doing it wrong. When you are the only one standing in your section, these are the people you are hurting. I am not saying everyone should sit on their hands the hole game, I am saying you need to use your brain and understand not everyone just graduated yesterday. Personally,mi can only hope to attend games as long as he did and if I can help make that experience possible and enjoyable for others for their entire life, I want to do it.

"If you're the only person standing on your section and you're yelling at everyone behind you, you're doing it wrong."

Agreed. I'm amused at the people who think it's perfectly OK to stand up in (say) row 10 and expect that the other seventy+ rows will follow suit without complaining.

I think this is also true, btw:

If you're the only person sitting on your section and you're yelling at everyone standing, you're doing it wrong.

I have got one more season in my 20's, but I will say that usually my back is killing me while I'm trying to get comfortable on those benches and moving my legs around so as to not knee the people in front of me. Whereas I prefer to stand for longer periods because it is far more comfortable. Maybe because I'mtaller than some. I don't think it is entirely about age.

Everyone stands in the swamp on big plays. It's not just an accusation thrown at people who should be in the student section. She enjoyed the game I took her to at the Big House and we both lost our voices, but she was surprised that people didn't stand more. It made it seem like people are less passionate fans. I don't suppose everyone has to stand if they really don't want to, but they sure better not criticize someone else for doing it.

Yep last season a few times. Section 36. Old folk all behind me complaining that I was standing during the Penn State game. When I turned around and told them I was standing so that I could see the field (due to people in front of me standing) and I would not sit down as I would no longer getting what I paid for. The older man yelled at me and said something along the lines of "dumbass kids (I'm 23) come in here for one or two games and think they can just do whatever the heck they want". I politely told him that "as a season ticket holder I am entitled to enjoy my seats. I'm sorry you aren't enjoying yours tonight but I'm not sitting down to watch the scoreboard so that you can see the scoreboard."

One person at a time if we have to. Hopefully the next generation of Michigan fans won't treat a game like a movie. Btw I'm 34 and would be standing right next to you. So no it's not like only recent grads who feel this way. Plan on feeing the same why as long as I am physically able. When I'm not I will stay at home and watch it on tv.

I got it a lot during the 2011 Notre Dame game. Somehow they didn't seem to care that I was standing because the 75 rows in front of me were also standing.

At the gator bowl in RichRod's last year it was someone's brilliant idea to bring their drunk MSU friend to our all-UM section, who then proceeded to ring his cowbell and taunt everyone in the section for the entirety of the game.
