Doug Gottlieb... Michigan hating dochebag

Submitted by chewieblue on

Anyone listening to Gottlieb this afternoon must have had similar feelings to mine when hearing this dote yet again express his obvious hatred for us.  I was driving in my car and wanted to scream while listening to his idiotic reasoning for why we really didn't deserve to win a share.

He was talking to Mike Conley and asking him if he watched the tOSU-MSU game. He then went into typical "I'm Doug Gottleib so I have to say something stupid about Michigan" mode.  Paraphrasing here....

... did you see Michigan jumping all around because they won a three way share of the Big Ten title?  Someone should tell them it doesn't count because they didn't even have to play at Wisconsin.  I mean how do you win a share of the Big Ten and not have to play at Wisconsin?

He's always getting his little digs in on us.  What does he have against us?  He's unprofessional, even by ESPN's standards.  Last year at tourney time he was bashing us on SC and saying we should really have been in the play-in game and picked us to lose "big" to Tennessee.  He also took many opportunities during bowl season to express his expert opinion on our football team and why we shouldn't be in the Sugar Bowl.  Him bashing us has become so common that I think it may actually be a well-devised joke.

You would think a former player who excelled in college and was short on next-level talent would have some appreciation for a group of guys who are a bit short on talent but long on heart and effort.  Doug should get back to criticizing NBA players who get paid to play half-ass and steer clear of a group of hard-working and selfless kids who brought a once proud program back from the dead.  Rain on someone else's parade Doug, Michigan basketball is on it's way back.

Your problem is listening to said douchebag.

I just avoid ESPN on Sirius when driving home.  He's not very informitive, nor entertaining, and his voice irritates me.

He's an idiot.

Last year he yelled at Joe Lunardi for a week on national TV about his bracket...then Joe ended up with more teams right than he did. When they both signed up for the ESPN March Madness Pick'em...Gottlieb was like in the 59% percentile. His bracket was beaten by mine and much of the world.

He's an idiot.

ESPN let him play in the celebrity basketball game at the NBA All-Star Weekend and he PRESSED. He stole the ball, he fouled, and he played his heart out (and still didn't get MVP) during a celebrity all-star game (in which he asked to be in).

He's an idiot.

Every year he kicks and screams like a small spoiled child when debating Katz or Lunardi...he's always wrong, he's always disrecpectful, he can't spell "bracketology" and I wouldn't be shocked if little Lunardi got St. Joe's basketball coach Phil Martelli to put a hit out on him.

He's an idiot.

Someone said something mean, let's all be angry! Calm down and take a deep breath, this should have no bearing on your happiness.

Yea, we REALLY need to bury that now. It was already kinda ridiculous later in the season with the team doing so well. When you accomplish something as significant as a conference title ,and one-upping the Fab 5 and the national championship team because of it, I think it's safe to say we've arrived.

I listened to Rome's show on Friday while driving from Miami to Tampa cause that rental car's radio only got AM stations.  In the 2 hours i listened he spent 5 minutes talking about sports and the rest of the time about getting gas and some stupid contest he is running.

How do you get kicked out of Notre Dame without stealing credit cards and making illegal charges on them?

Oh yeah, you don't.  You have to do dumb stuff like commit theft and credit card fraud to get booted out of school and end up at Ok. State.  Now I totally understand.

Ya, I wouldn't be excited for winning a conference title for a team that hasn't won a B1G title since before I was born. That's just preposterous.

But seriously, stop giving credence to national radio talkshow hosts/columnists. They hardly ever know their head from their ass when talking about a particular team. And every "prediction" they make is no more relevant than mine or yours. If they were actually good at predicting, they would be betting in Vegas, and not spitting into the microphone.

Here's the thing.  When you're a school like Michigan, and you have literally millions of fans, there are going to be people who hate you.  The Doug Gottliebs, the Mike Wilbons, hell even the Miek Farrells.  That's just part of the territory.

Guess what - Doug Gottlieb doesn't talk shit about USC basketball or UConn football, because no one cares about them.  People care about Michigan.  It's what makes us great, but you have to deal with a handful of idiots along the way.

Wilbon doesn't like Michigan because he went to Northwestern.  If my math is right, Michigan went to the Rose Bowl in each of his first three years of college.  At a time when the Wildcats won 3 football games in 4 years.  I can understand that kind of hate.

Gottlieb, I'm guessing, still thinks of himself as a Domer.  And it is always the converts and the rejects who love/hate the hardest.  As a Jewish kid from Southern California who was booted from ND after his freshman year for criminal activity, I'm guessing his own self-loathing and sense of rejection at not being able to cut it at ND just fuels the Michigan hatred even more.  His first three years of high school were the Fab Five years, so to him Michigan has always probably been the ultimate enemy as well.

If I, as an atheist who was baptized Episcopalian and briefly attended Catholic school as a young kid, suddenly became a die-hard BYU fan and enrolled there over offers from a wide variety of schools across the country, only to be booted for seriously bad behavior, that would be somewhat puzzling to say the least.  I'm guessing a Jewish kid from suburban SoCal who decided to go to a catholic university in rural Indiana when their basketball program was totally dogshit has a weird, powerful emotional bond with the school that also doesn't quite make sense to anyone else.  To then get kicked out/rejected by that school is also probably a strange phenomenon.  Now all he really has left is his animosity, and a big chunk of that has probably always been directed at Michigan.

No matter what they tell you in school, simply mentioning a person's race, religion, or ethnicity isn't offensive or insulting.  Honest.

Fantastic.  This times a million.  People getting all up in arms when race/religion is so much as mentioned are tiresome and most of the time simply looking to get someone in trouble for doing so.  In this case, the reference to Gottlieb being Jewish is 100% relevant.

Wisconsin lost 4 home games this year. It didn't appear to be as tough to play at this year. And we beat Wisconsin by 18 at home. We also swept N'W and Illinois, who MSU both lost to and only played once. And OSU didn't play @Purdue. How can you win the B1G title without playing @ West Lafayette. He's just mad that he never won a conference championship at Notre Dame or Oklahoma St.

So Doug gottlieb hates Michigan.....this should not upset you. He is paid to give his opinions. Not everyone likes Michigan. I don't understand why you would let guys like gottlieb, wilbon, cowherd etc get to you. It's just, like, their opinion, man.

Gottlieb actually hates everything that involves the state of Michigan, never has a positive thing to say about any school in michigan, i guess it's the notre shame still in him or something.

He's always been a douchebag.  He went to Notre Dame and was promptly kicked out after stealing credit cards from his teammate.  Also know that his dad coached at Milwaukee and hence the naming of not playing at Wisconsin.

We played the other two co-champions twice apiece, but played the fourth-place team only once, so our championship is invalid.  Yeah, okay.

Every Big Ten team played four teams only once.  Besides Wisconsin, the other teams we played once finished 8th (Iowa), 10th (Minnesota) and tied for 11th (Nebraska).  Easy schedule?

What's silly about this is that we are #7 in conferense SOS on ESPN's Daily RPI, nestled nicely between #3 Michigan State and #8 Ohio State. We were #1 prior to playing @Penn State Sunday.  One-plays for the champs were Iowa (all three), Minnesota (UM and Ohio), Penn State (Ohio and State), Wisconsin (UM), Purdue (Ohio), Northwestern (Michigan State), Illinois (Michigan State), and Nebraska (UM).

Basically, all three had nearly identical schedules with one-plays against Iowa, a cellar team (T-last Penn State or Nebraska), a very flawed team (T-9thMinnesota or Illinois), and then a wild card. Conventional wisdom would say Wisconsin > Purdue > Northwestern so Michigan slightly lucked out. Stupid thing for Gottlieb to bitch about. Frankly, Northwestern gave us two battles and we rolled Wisconsin, so I'm not even sure what to think of this.

It must bring ratings. Change the dial. Honestly, I don't care about haters. It usually is a signal we're doing well. No point in hating 5 years ago, or 10, or 15, or 20 . . . Michigan wasn't in the conversation.

You may not like UNC, or Duke, or Kansas, or Kentucky, or MSU, or Ohio, or Syracuse, or Florida, but if you pay attention, you will notice they all have haters, to various degrees, for various reasons. I'd much rather Michigan be in the hated group then the irrelevant group.

Gottlieb's always come across as a Napoleon Complex toting B**ch.  Listening to him break down a game or spew actual knowledge is okay because he really does know the game.  Once past that, and it happens quickly, and "opinions" start getting shat out of his mouth he comes off as an ass.

To Section 1: No you're not.  Be happy you don't.  Just another pundit voice from the monopolist ESPN (& Conley played at OSU few years back).

Now that you mention it, I do remember Conley as a player at OSU, and I feel just a little embarassment for not remembering him before.  That's my bad.

But Gottlieb?  I don't think so.

I'm sure Gottlieb doesn't understand it, after all did he ever win one at ND (before stealing credit cards) or Oklahoma State?

I don't understand why a team has to play at Wisconsin in order to be rightfully designated big ten champs.  Yeah its a hard place to win in, but we played at Indiana instead, which is equally hard and we lost by 2.
