Double Hello: Freddy Canteen & Brandon Watson

Submitted by icefins26 on

According to Adam Friedman from Rivals we apprently received commitments from both Freddy Canteen (2014 WR) and also his teammate Brandon Watson (2014 CB).

EDIT:  Confirmed by Sam Webb.

#Michigan picked up commitments Freddy Canteen and Brandon Watson from Eastern Christian Academy

Well, well.  Scott for sure to Clemson?

Watson is pretty jacked for a corner, and Canteen is rated a 4 Star on Rivals after some camp performances...

Other than that, I don't think anyone really has seen much from them...

However, my favorite commits are the ones who earn offers at camp...The coaches obviously have no doubt on their talents..

This isn't good news. This probably means we lost Williams, Scott and Westphal....great. But congrats to these two I hope they become big pieces to this team.

Scott is gone. Westphal could still be in the class as either a safety or a CB> But the clock is ticking on him. For a guy who'shad us as his leader for over 1 year he sure is taking his time...

Probably not, because Adoree' Jackson is aiming for the Olympics in the long jump, and Michigan isn't a great place to get him there. Jackson's not really a viable candidate for Michigan, frankly.

I hope the coaches got something on mind here because looking at their offer list.....uh... Welcome welcome though.

Reminds me of an exchange student some friends of mine hosted.  She was being treated poorly at the high school she was attending because all the students thought she was Mexican.  They eventually learned that she was from Spain and was really European.  All of a sudden she became fairly popular and was treated much better.

High school students...SMH

but then I checked that thread and sure enough, there it was: "...fanbase that ousted RR cuz he was Mexican?"

So much FAIL in so few words. Impressive.

Regardless, sounds like a couple of nice additions to the '14 class. Until given a reason to think otherwise, I trust Hoke & Co. when it comes to recruiting.

It thought it was funny so mission accomplished. I guess the context of my post was lost in the translation, but is expect nothing less from the general public that represents this board. The line about RR being mexican was from some M fans that were killing him in and around the stadium after the Toledo game. This was a general belief of RR and anotjer example of the "racist" behaviors of typical M fans during his tenure. Being a huge fan of his as well as an M fan in general, I found it in poor taste especially since he isn't Mexican. I'll take my humor elsewhere to be appreciated. Perhaps to another M board that doesn't contain so many "Michigan Men".

But please tell me all about your job and how Much better you are than the fine folks who park cars down there. Oh wait, nobody parks cars down there, so I guess this was an attempt to somehow put me down because you are so much better, smarter, richer and more significant to society than I am? Is that it? Oh, I get it now... Good one.

I hate comments like these. Seriously the coaches just spent the last few days watching them first hand and working with them and the kids impressed but your iffy because they don't have offers from USC and Florida. Come on man. They play at a school that only played 3 football games last year and there is little to no film. Word on the pay sites, these 2 guys probably would have been blown up if they had played normal hs ball. During 7 on 7 canteen and Watson have been regarded as the most dynamic players at just about every event they have played in. I think you have to trust the coaches here. Should speak volumes that the coaches valued them as much as guys like Williams and westphal after just one camp appearance.

I don't agree with folks that this is a bad turn of events. If you start with the premise that that the coaches aren't stupid/understand game theory, the natural conclusion to me is that we are simply lacking a lot of critical information:

-these kids had limited offer lists and committed quickly after being offered. This tells me either we could have waited a lot longer if they actually weren't that good OR they were so good in person and so under scouted that we wanted to nab them before they blew up. The coaches are smart enough not to use up spots that can be filled a month before signing day on mediocre prospects now
-another possibility is we are going to experience more attrition than expected and thus have additional depth spots. I'm not going to take this as a huge negative as we can still go after all out plan A guys
-the only way this could be interpreted as bad news for a 'smart' coaching staff if it means they simply know we're whiffing badly on all our plan As, so badly we can't even make up ground between now and signing day, and don't think we can make inroads on other highly rated prospects that we aren't recruiting right now. Judging from the noises our plan A recruits are making, this doesn't sound super likely

a bad turn of events. I think people are just a little sensitive given what we have heard in the last week about the altered expectations for the class, and that we had been fairly used to hearing about only 4+ star guys we were recruiting. People have been really feeling like Scott/Westphal and a couple others were highly likely to come, and we've come back to earth a little bit, and so I think people hear "we picked up a couple guys who were recent offers who play similar positions as these other people" and think "Oh my God, no one is coming, the recruiting sky is falling." However, if you actually look at how this played out, it sounds like a couple guys who played in a set of circumstances where their exposure was fairly low nationally suddenly hit the camp circuit and turned out to be criminally underrated, and the staff said "Get these guys now", and so see them as good players whom they really want.
