For the first time I can remember, I simply don't care whether Michigan wins or loses tonight. The main reason is because it's my daughters' (yes, that's plural) birthday today and I will be busy with that. But that alone doesn't explain it. Normally, I would at least have the game on while something else is going on. This level of apathy regarding something I previously considered one of my main passions in life is alarming. Advice?
Don't Care Anymore
The only thing left for the regular season is to build momentum and seeding in the big ten tourney.
my advice would be to discontinue your xanax intake. I find it tends to make you apathetic.
...but the advice I can give is this: if you truly don't care, don't start up a post about it.
David from Wyoming agrees with Dave.
They could fold the basketball program and I wouldn't really care. This is an alarming state of mind, but there's no sense in denying it.
You and your Avitar are not Michigan men, please remove his shirt, he doesn't deserve to wear it.
That is fine for you, but there is also no sense denying that aren't really a Michigan fan then. To say that you wouldn't care if one of our major programs folds doesn't say much about your loyalty to Michigan.
I have been a fan of UM bball since I got my picture taken with Sean Higgins, Tim McCormick, Rumeal Robinson, and some of the other players from the early late 80s, early 90s. We will make it back. The last decade has been tough, no doubt, but we will be back. There is a lot of history to our basketball program. Study up, maybe you will learn some of it.
Thought this apathy might be a shared feeling worth discussing.
It probably is shared, but those people probably don't care enough to respond to this post.
Just keep looking at this...
This one is also fun to look at...
Not like these kids aren't going to school and busting their asses to try to make the school, fans and more importantly themselves proud.
While the game may not mean much to you it sure as shit means a lot to them.
I'm willing to bet that UM Indy feels apathetic about your criticism of his apathy.
As does Henri.
It's okay though. UM Indy is at a low point right now. He will bounce back. He is experiencing that sporadic, momentary event called "real life" that sometimes interrupts our obsession with sports.
with Michigan Athletics. If you're not you're either not a fan, or you're dead. But to say that you don't care if they win or lose is IMO crazy.
I want Michigan to be the best in everything. In everything that we do I want our school to be represented well. Whether it be in Jeopardy! or the name competition (MAKADANGDANG) or in any athletic sport from Football to Ice Dancing to Synchronized Swimming. I want these men and women who have put their hearts and souls into this University to do well.
Same on you if you don't give a shit but you should have your fan card taken away.
...it has to be important to everyone else in the world? For that matter, I have a neighbor who protests for animal rights and anyone can see how important animal rights are to her. It's practically her life. I guess that everyone else in the world should become vegetarians now as well. Sorry for the sarcasm, but I just get tired of reading all of these posts that are just opinion, but some people's egos are so inflated that they feel everyone must share their opinion. To say that someone isn't a fan just b/c they've lost interest in their team is ridiculous and arrogant. People can be fans, just b/c they're not as big of a fan as you are is no reason to say they're not a fan. To get mad at someone just b/c they don't think the same way as you or have the same values as you is absurd. Don't get me wrong, I get frustrated with fairweather fans as well, but I would never go so far as to try and put them down for it.
University of Michigan Athletics RULE!!!!
Not a problem, your family is important, I love Michigan sports but I don't allow them to superscede my family. If you can use the DVR to record the game, after the kids have gone to bed watch it. I rarely get to watch live games with my kids around. It is just part of the way life is.
You should be "All in" regardless!
Am I the only person who has grown tired of the "All In!" marketing schtick?
I am certainly not tired of it. WTF do you want our "marketing schtick" to be?
"We were sweet now we aren't very good in anything! GO BLUE!"
That is pretty awesome!
I fully support this thread evolving into self-deprecating marketing shticks.
"Hey, sorry this year kinda sucked but look - our helmets' got wings!"
"Sure our goaltending might not be that great, but now you can chant "Ug-ly Par-ents" more! Go Blue!"
I like it. I am somewhat tired of people making the "all in" marketing synonymous with never criticize Michigan. I've never really thought fair criticism is a bad thing or means you're not all for your school. Yet, any criticism for anything Michigan (Players, Coaching Staff, Admins, etc.) on this blog gets you negged.
That's the point. It's not that it's a bad line, it's just used in a completely asinine way. It shouldn't be a line in the sand or a way of saying "you're not a good enough fan." It does nothing to heal the divide in our fan base.
I can love Michigan and not like Rich Rodriguez. Unfortunately, Rich Rodriguez seems to disagree, based on his statements at the Victors Rally.
My cubicle wall would reply, "Yes, you are".
When "all in" first became the M football slogan, I thought it was cheez of the limburger variety.
But when the Freep tried to single-handedly take down our coach, I declared myself ALL IN loudly and clearly, and I have never looked back.
and it comes as no surprise.
Yes, you are the only person who has grown tired of "All In for Michigan." Apparently, you are also the only person who has confused good coaching with tepid marketing.
i have mixed feelings about the ESPN broadcast tonight. its nice to be on a big stage and i am sure the crowd will be in it, but there will be lots of season recap stuff that will be salt in the wounds.
Phil Collins fans unite!
1. Beat MSU at MSU
2. Beat OSU at OSU
3. Finish above .500 (not what we hoped for at the beginning of the year, but better than not being above .500)
4. Make a run in the conference tournament and salvage some respect
This is the first time all year I probably will miss a game tonight. Team is frustrating to watch. I hope they pull it together for a strong run to the NIT? What is wrong with this picture? Wake me up after the Olympics are over.
Don't give up now. Live through the lows so you can truely enjoy the highs.
Keep your stick on the ice there "truely." Don't give up now.
Haha, I was coming back to edit my spelling because "truely" wasn't sitting with me well. Now you have locked me in so everyone can belittle me for my mistake. Well played Dude, well played.
I only get off the couch for times like these, truely. I negged myself for being such an asshole.
I wasn’t offended; on the contrary I was honored to have grammar nazi coming after me for my first time (IIRC).
Next time it rains, lock the doors and windows, pull the blinds, and don't come out of hiding until the weather turns fair again.
An inverse measure of how much you care
UM Indy - your honesty and openness is refreshing. Dont pay attention to all the black or white, simple-minded, i.e., you are either always 100% or you are not, folks like Bouje. They take a simplistic view on a complex phenomenon when something that is part of your life is going downhill. It is a perfectly normal, adaptive psychological response to build some separation between you and that which is such an integral part of your life yet is going downhill. It is in fact perhaps a measure of just how much you care. Apathy is just an adaptive response. It means nothing about you "fandom."
The apathy will go away. Hang in there.
Some fans are too quick to harp on other fans. You can be a true Michigan fan and not care about the game tonight. It happens.
I'll be watching, though. I'm a glutton for punishment, and I have low expectations.
I think its important to get as many Michigan friends around as possible and lead them in singing the Victors as loud as you can. That always makes me feel better.
"impressive margin of victory" scenarios that could land Michigan in the NCAA tournament.
...and it's not fair to turn on them when they're losing. That's when you need all the support you can get.
