As expected, Max Domi was drafted 8th overall by the Kingston Frontenacs in the OHL Priority Selection. Domi has repeatedly stated that he wants to play for Michigan, but Kingston is probably the team that has the best chance of luring him away.
Domi drafted 8th overall by Kingston in OHL Priority Selection
That sucks, but anticipated. Lets pray that he comes to AA...so much better than Kingston
He would be a huge pick up for M. I hope he stays out of the OHL.
Related question, I have yet to hear any rumblings on the replacement for Mel Pearson, has anyone heard of any candidates?
Well, that's a shame. I'll cross my fingers, but it looks like he'll be OHL bound. Someday we're going to get another elite offensive guy. Haven't had one of them in a while.
anyone know whats going on with jacob trouba? i've heard that name thrown around as someone who might end up at michigan but i have no idea. anyone know what the status is there?
Trouba is 99% expected to report to the OHL after his NTDP commitment is done. In the 1% chance he goes to the NCAA, it'll be to either Michigan or Notre Dame.
Nice roundup on the speculation on what Domi will do. http://sports.yahoo.com/juniorhockey/blog/buzzing_the_net/post/OHL-Doug-...
Since its been more than a few hours since he was drafted and hasn't said he's going to the OHL yet, it might be legit that they didn't have a deal worked out in advance. But a draft so easily gamed is a joke. I read one article talking about requiring the players to declare, which sounded like a good idea.
all of the canadian/OHL commentators assume he's going to the OHL and his flirtations with Michigan are just for show. I really hope Domi comes here so I can read all their reactions
You don't take a guy in the first round in the OHL unless you are sure he is going to play. Especially if your coach is the player's former teammate and friend. Its not an OHL superiority thing, its circumstance.
In the OHL, first round picks are like gold. There is no free agency so its your only way to get top talent players. Imagine the NFL x100 in terms of how valuable the first round pick is. So valuable, in fact, that teams aren't even allowed to trade picks in the first round - only any round after that.
good to know. I thought Domi being picked up in the 1st round was bad news
" in fact, that teams aren't even allowed to trade picks in the first round"
pretty sure this is not true. I know that the QMJHL has trades in the 1st round all the time, so I don't see why they wouldn't be allowed in the O.
I didn't know that you could trade first round picks in the Q, but I know for sure that you can't in the OHL. Just look it up.
You can't even trade the player that you select in the first round in the first year outside of a specific window.
If Domi doesn't report, then Kingston would get another first round pick next year right after their 2012 first round pick.
No 1st round trades in the O, but yes in the Q. Not sure why they have different deals, though the Q has quite the history of blockbuster large package trades...
I have no idea what to think right now....do they own his rights in that league now, or does he re-enter the draft if he doesn't sign?
They own his rights for as long as he is eligible to play in the OHL.
It could have been worse for Michigan...he could have been selected by the London Knights which would have pretty much guaranteed he goes to the OHL.
That said, Kingston has some advantages in recruiting him (aside from the higher calibre of play in the OHL and better preparation for pro hockey since by all intents and purposes these kids are really underpaid professionals) with Doug Gilmour/Todd Gill and relationships with the kid's family. Also, the new arena, the KRock Centre in downtown Kingston is nice seating around 5700 with boxes etc. and consistent with the newer buildigns in the league (SSM, Windsor, London etc.) . Queen's University in Kingston is an excellent school with great facilities and is widely considered a very marketable degree. As for the town, Kingston is a beautiful and historic community.
It would be a nice get for M hockey but it won't be easy.
you almost make me want to go to Kingston. I'd have to imagine our chances of landing Domi are low at this point.
It seems 'dirty like dirt sandwiches' that the OHL seems to draft guys strategically to keep them in the OHL
I am unsure they so much strategically draft the kids as much as the kids want to start playing pro hockey at an early age against the bet competition...and make no doubt the OHL is now, for all intents and purposes, pro hockey lite.
I don't know about Domi himself, but I do know that Kingston thinks they are going to get him to go there. Teams miss on top 10 picks sometimes, but not often. They wouldn't just take that shot if they thought he was a Michigan lean. Hate to be a pessimist, but whatever we thought our chances were with him before, I'd cut them in half now, at least.
For what my opinion is worth, he's probably going to the O.
Actually, I guess it's more like Tie's saying it via Dougie G.
“I spoke to Tie and his ex-wife Leanne (recently) and their decision is to go elsewhere right now,” Gilmour said. “But this is junior hockey and there could be changes. If he wants to play in this league, it's kind of up to us. I'd love to have him.”
