Doles to visit for IU game. Commit watch?

Submitted by no joke its hoke on

Tommy Doles is visiting for the basketball game against IU. I thought since "Coach" Brown can call out a commitment watch everytime someone visits, then i can too.

Coach Brown or not, it's not a bad idea to be on commit watch every time Doles comes to campus from now until he commits anywhere.  Not just because we're his leader, but also because we just picked up a commit from an interior lineman and it's likely we only take one more.

It's not a now or never situation for him, but the pressure is on him a little bit.

I've heard this argument made by Sparty fans before, and I don't get it at all.  Do they only offer one kid per position at a time?  Of course not.  I'm sure MSU has more scholarships out than they have room for, and I'm sure they have to tell some kids at some positions that they won't be recruiting them anymore because that position is full.  I imagine every single school that offers scholarship does this.

So stupid.

False.  You haven't been listening to MSU fans closely enough to really understand what's going on.  Here's basically what happens:

The recruit shows up in Ann Arbor to see Michigan.  As he's getting ready to leave, Hoke invites him into his office.  As soon as the recruit and his parents step in, Hoke locks the door and eats the key.  He then tells the recruit that he has to commit or else someone will take his spot.  When the commit says no, Hoke says, "MOTHERFUCKER, YOU WILL COMMIT."  Just as the kid starts crying (and bravely calling Coach Dantonio), Hoke grabs a knife and holds it to the mom's neck.  The brilliance here is that the kid's dad is secretly in on it, since the kid would never go to Michigan without his dad pressuring him.  Dad pleads with the recruit to spare his mom's life.  The recruit commits, Hoke opens the door, and on the way out Mattison maniacally yells, "You're gonna be the next Terrell Suggs!"

Every staff pressures recruits to commit. Some are more overt than others, but the pressure is still there. I can't say what Michigan's staff does, but I'd be really surprised if they don't tell kids how many spots are open at a given position, tell them they can't dilly-dally, and then tell them they'd like them to commit. Every coach in America does a version of that. Some may be more or less pushy, but they all pressure kids to commit.

If a kid is interested in your school and he is an OL and you plan to recruit 4 OL and one interior lineman has signed up, telling him you have 3 spots left and 2 are going to OT prospects and he plays the interior isn't pressure, it's information.  If the kid is sure he wants your school, he understands it is time to make a decision.  If he is not sure, he can take his chances, look around, and risk not having the offer.  That is actually fair to the kid, not a bad thing.  Worse is to let him think there are a couple slots out there when there are not, or to say nothing while you work a higher-rated prospect to commit to the open spot.

With this and news of a Peppers visit soon, I've put together my midly realistic dream class -

Offense -

Speight

Hood

Harris

Lattimore

Bars

Cole

Doles

Defense -

Hand

McDowell

Marshall

Mone

Ferns

Booker

Peppers

Westphal

Nicholson

That's 16 which I'm sticking with until I hear something otherwise about attrition bringing numbers up.  With Gardner getting his 5th year does it mean currently that class can only expect 15?

Hood really looks to be going to Notre Dame. Marshall just really seems to favor the Spartans and OSU more for some reason. But the rest of those guys do seem very high on Michigan(minus two guys I'll mention below). I think I'd take Adoore(probably just butchered that spelling) if Marshall doesn't come, and I'm sure Michigan could find someone to fill the Hood void in your dream line-up. Not that Marshall or Hood won't come to Michigan, they just seem to favor other teams more.

I also can't say I've heard Lattimore or Nicholson in relation to Michigan that much either, but that's just because I haven't followed recruiting a ton.

Yeah I'm not really sure where all of this hate for Coach Brown is coming from. He doesn't even make money off of his website or anything like that. He provides good information for free and talks to a lot of the recruits and commits and yet everyone seems to rag on him. He also predicted Ferns to us way before anyone else (any of the paysites) did. He probably has a better track record for predictions than Tremendous had back when he was free. They used to get their predictions wrong a lot of the time right before decisions were being made, Ty Issac and Drake Harris off the top of my head, and never got this kind of consist hate from people on here.

Most of the hate comes from guys like Tim S. and Steve (Tremendous) and reader loyal to those sites..  Coach Brown went on the 247sports recruiting thread and gave some information only to be flamed by Tremendous.

He has "mspeedkills" working with/for him now.  That guy has been accused by may for stealing "insider" content and putting it on his twitter.

I agree with your first paragraph -- Tim S and Tremendous shouldn't try to dissuade people from listening to him solely because he is a competitor (assuming his information is gathered in an ethical manner), but if you don't think that mspeedkills is just a tweeter of paywalled information, then you're smoking something.  Mspeedkills' only connections are the money he sends Scout/Rivals/247 for premium access.

I don't really follow what mspeedkills says so I don't know.  I just know he has been accused by many for tweeting premium content.

I just added that thing about mspeedkills because if he is actually working with/for Coach Brown, people are going to think that the info that Coach Brown provides is stolen as well.

A couple of the mods over at Rivals are pretty prickly (Tim Sullivan and Chris Balas).  I don't follow Mspeedkills on Twitter but I've seen his stuff retweeted, and it almost always seems to be paywalled content that he passes off as his own.

I understand that some people that use the paysites get upset when they think someone is "stealing" info from a paysite and reporting as their own, but when he is actually interviewing recruits and and talking to them and their family members, I'm not sure how you can hate on the guy for getting that information out there. I don't have a twitter, so I can't say I know much about that angle. The fact that I got negged multiple times for saying nothing inflammatory or incorrect and just trying to point out that he is a Michigan fan and actually has an informed opinion on when recruits might make a decision just shows how immature people can be when it comes to this stuff. I'm not sure if anyone saw the converstion a little while ago on 247, but Steve pretty much tried to call him out and was very unprofessional in doing so and yet people are ripping on a guy giving you free information he is getting from recruits on his own time. Hell, Logan Tuley Tillman obviously thought highly enough of him to do a personal recording for his website almost a year ago  so its not like he just started either, and he also got one of the first Project 135 shirts from Ferns so he actually has good relations with recruits.

I don't follow him or this mspeedkills guy (or anyone else on twitter for that matter) but I got enough exposure to Steve on this website (and never visited tremendous) to think that what you say about him in your post is probably pretty accurate. I know lots of people here liked the guy, but I always found him a tad unprofessional. But that's just my opinion.

"Coach Brown went on the 247sports recruiting thread and gave some information only to be flamed by Tremendous."

I think that some of that venom stems from him constantly trying to hijack the comment section of Tremendous' facebook page. He used to go on there and post every 5-10 minutes with a small bit of info and a link to his site and from judging by Steve's reaction, he probably did not ask him permission before hand.

I'm not pretending to know the whole story or either person involved, but I don't think it is unreasonable to be pissed at a guy who has tried for months to, for lack of a better word, mooch off your audience to further his personal gain, especially without asking.

I ask prospects to follow me after I follow them so we can communicate.  That is what Twitter is for.  Also, to my knowledge, I have never asked a recruit to DM me.  I ask them to follow, if they choose to oblige, I message them once it happens.  I can't understand why using Twitter exactly the way it was designed to use is a turn off for some.

I think that many fans think that following high school kids on twitter or contacting them is creepy.

you may think its ok, and this is Murica, so do your thing...

but I think it's creepy and exploitive.

I don't know you so I'm not going to judge you, but the statement that you use twitter the exact way it's supposed to be used so what's the problem makes me think you might have some issues with your ability to reason.

Personally I hate twitter and don't use it, but I can see why some people might do so. I don't think people here have any issue with people who use twitter "the way it's supposed to be used" when it is done with people of your respective age group. When adults start following kids and asking them to follow them is when people start getting upset.

If you're an adult, follow and communicate with other adults. Don't follow kids and pester them to follow you...that's just creepy.

As opposed to calling a recruit constantly?  Tremendous, Sam Webb, pretty much every recruiting guy does that.  Tweeting/facebook/whatever social media is an extension of that.

IMHO calling a 17 year-old's cell phone seems as creepy as twitterstalking.  And Tremendous was accused of being a stalker on this very board when he first got up and running...to label someone who is essentially trying to do what Tremendous did (get good info, post it for free, and try to parlay that into some sort of income, presumably) is a little bit hypocritical

So Tremendous was mad at Coach Brown for riding his coat tales.  Got it.

It totally makes sense because Tremendous drove traffic to his site out of thin air, it's not like he posted info or links on any bigger sites like, oh, say, this one for example.

</s>

(FWIW I think this Coach Brown guy is off-putting in how he goes about things.  But for Tremendous to get pissed at Coach Brown for basically doing the same thing Tremendous did here is just disingenuous.)

Stop Fighting!!! LALALALALA!!

Seriously though this Coach Brown character is starting to become as polarizing as RDT was back in the days of 2012.  Everyone either despised him or was kissing his feet.  Why the extremes?  Why can't everyone just accept him for what he is with a nice grain of salt since everything in recruiting is fluid?

True.  I love Coach Brown.  Free info and interviews on recruits.  Just like what the pay sites are trying to sell me for the low low price of $9.99 per month!!!!

I used to love Tremendous for the same reasons, but he sold out and now wants to make a living selling me information about the University I love and recruits who might go there.

Lol, can you see the reason some are polarized?
