Does Tom Selleck have to slap a bitch?

Submitted by Magnum P.I. on
While doing work tonight, I was alerted by a new email in my inbox from MGoBlog with the subject: "You have annoyed people to the point of losing super powers." I giggled, but thought there must be some mistake seeing as I hadn't posted anything since yesterday morning. Sure enough, upon further investigation, my point total had plummeted from somewheres above 500 to its current status in the 440s. Some nefarious villain had resorted to the most despicable of MGoBlog acts: negging old posts instead of living life. Now this was no crime of passion, mind you. This inveterate psychopath could not be assuaged by a mere 20 or 30 negs. Our suspect systematically negged EVERY POST I HAVE EVER MADE. An impressive feat of persistence and tenacity that, properly harnessed and nurtured, could go far in helping to solve real-world problems. Alas, this tortured soul, having no more posts to neg, is left without recourse to deal with his searing inferiority. Such people do exist. I have only engaged in MGoFisticuffs with one other member on this board, and in my last post no less. I am tempted to name this person outright such that he be subject to ridicule and contempt, but without proper trial by MGoJury, I abstain. But such people do exist. Good night. [Note, you've accomplished nothing now that the 500 point limit has been lifted].

...With great power comes great responsibility..... I'd just be careful about the whole slappin' around thing. I slapped Fredo around once. You know what happened next. But I now have a picture of Magnum slapping Higgins stuck in my head....

And you've just resorted to the most pathetic: posting about it on the board.

It looks like Brian started playing with points stuff. I know on the mod sidebar, we can now see voting statistics. All we can see is the total # of times someone voted and what their net voting pattern is. For example, Say I've voted 5 times, 3 positive, 2 negative. I would have 5 total votes and a +1 voting sum. It's interesting to see how some people vote. Others, I'm totally unsurprised that their vote sum says that 3/4 of their votes or more are negative. Progress is being made.

Is there any way to make it so that posts that are more than, say, a week old are locked and points can be neither added nor subtracted? That would keep the immediate feedback of the system intact while making abuse of the system far less effective and therefore far less likely. Another possibility would be to make the process totally transparent. That way, one would think twice about abusing the system because there would be a chance of it being abused back in their face.

There is very clearly one person (you're at least the third person this has happened to) on this board that needs to find something else to do. Seriously - put that time towards something productive FFS. Should be interesting to see what happens if that person gets PO'd by somebody with 80+ pages of posts. For those curious on voting sums, it's available already, from the Navigation block: http://mgoblog.com/voteupdown/usersvotes Edit: how it works, 'cause math is tricky for some: (Total - abs(Sum)) / 2 = Number of votes that cancel out to zero (ie, equal number +/-). The remainder is additional number of (+/-, only one or the other) votes.
