Does Tate See The Field Saturday?

Submitted by Robbie Moore on
Answer: No. At least I don't think so. No reason to rush him. Take a week off. If it is just a "mild" concussion then he'll be ready for Penn State, where we really do need him. In the meantime, Delaware State is a great opportunity to get Denard some experience, especially throwing. Isn't uninformed speculation just great?

But won't this hurt Tate's Heisman hopes? YES, that's a joke, before the Neg Bombs drop. Get Denard out there Saturday, have him throw for 200 yds, rush for 150, use his slew of backs and bring home a nice 48-3 romp.

IF cleared by the doctors--got to get him out there, in a more controlled manner, with directives on what to do. He needs the start, the team needs it. He's The Leader. After it's 14-0, it's Denard's game all the way.

The great thing about opinions regarding concussions is that the average Joe knows just about as much as Doctors. The medical theory du jour is that concussions have not been given the serious treatment they deserve. So in the interest of the rest of Tate's life, we should probably sit him no matter who we play but especially against Delaware State. No need for Tate to have the brain of an 85 year old at 44 a la Andre Waters.

Mr. TKB, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul. Your posts belong on the freep or mlive.

People should use the word "Brain Injury" instead of concussion. Kids think that they are invincible. To compound it Tate's such a gamer he'll want to play even if he's not 100%. He wanted to go back in Saturday night. Another hard shot to his dome could have had lasting impact. Screw all that just have him go. Why??? This isn't a tough it out injury. Permanent brain damage is the risk. Who wants to spend the rest of their life as a Buckeye???

"The great thing about opinions regarding concussions is that the average Joe knows just about as much as Doctors." I don't agree with this. Neurologists and people who study concussions hard-core know the details about recovery process, brain swelling, second-impact syndrome neural plasticity and other big words. But these are specialists, and their guidelines are just filtering down to the training staffs and day-to-day docs who run the sports programs. And some of their guidelines are too conservative, damaging their credibility in sports medicine. I had a grade 1/grade 2 (depends on the classification used) single-impact concussion where I forgot what day it was and my locker combination; I didn't lose symptoms until a week later and I was out for three weeks, which ended my season. "Cleared by Wednesday" sounds like a good acid test. Case in point: if Tate was fuzzy during the game, he stands a good chance of recovering by Penn State. If Tebow was "out" for two minutes as was reported, there's no way he could have played against LSU without a considerable risk of catastrophic reinjury. It's all the more complicated by the fact that concussion-like symptoms - confusion, nausea, headache - can be induced by dehydration and playing a long football game. We coaches misdiagnosed dehydration as a concussion last weekend and the kid was a-OK the next day with no problems.

Thanks for this Topher. I wondered about dehydration, especially in the cold. I'm guessing that Tate had not played a game in conditions like that before. Athletes often don't realize that they can get dehydrated in the cold just as they can in hot, humid conditions. I'm not doubting the concussion. I'm just guessing that there are other factors as well. Those of us who grow up in the Great Lakes get used to taking care of our physical needs in cold weather exertion from the time jr. high sports happen. He (nor have the Floridians) hasn't had that luxury.

I would like to see Tate start the couple of series to keep his confidence up and then see Denard play the rest of the game. Will this happen? Who knows. I haven't been able to explain much of any of Rich Rod's decisions this year. Were they bad decisions? Not necessarily and, for the record, I don't think so. But there have definitely been a lot of head scratchers. In summary, it's futile to speculate who will get the start this saturday. Rich Rod will decide what's best for the team, and what's best may not make sense to any of the rest of us.

It's Del State, a seemingly easy game. DRob needs the experience, should start and play the entire game. Tate plays only if things are looking really bad. This should have been the plan from the beginning of the season.

If Tate practices, I expect him to start. He's the better option at QB, and I'd expect him to be in the game until we open up some sort of a point gap. Also, if he CAN play, he will play just so that he keeps some game rhythm before Penn State. But I do think we'll see Denard for a large chunk of the game. Denard starting, not unless it's necessary. He still doesn't take good care of the ball when passing, so it would be unfair to all the other guys who defend or work hard to move the ball if he kills drives throwing INTs. If we have a sizeable lead, then it should be time to throw in a bunch of inexperienced players, both on offense and defense.

Tate shouldn't see the field unless he is good to go on Tuesday. However, I think the timing of the game is a good opportunity to get Denard some seriously needed work. Tate will start the following week vs. Penn State but I don't think we should rush him. I will say it here first, we will rush for over 400 yards this week with Minor, Brown, Shaw, Denard and Vincent Smith all reaching the endzone. It is important for DR to get some passign game reps as well. MB

Tate should sit this one out. What is going on with the hand he was shaking? I didn't see a helmut strike or anything when he released the ball. DRob should be able to get the team down the field, and score.

I honestly can't tell if you guys are joking, or not. If he's cleared to play, then yes, play him. He's a freshman, who just had a bad, and probably frustrating, game. Why would you sit him against a bad team, and let him dwell on his performance against Iowa? Especially when we play Penn State the next week. If he's cleared to play (which I'm assuming he will be, how Rich Rod was talking about it), get him in and get his confidence back up. Get the offense settled down and back on track.

Tate was making very bad decisions on Saturday, trying to be a hero and forcing plays before it was absolutely necessary. He's still a freshman, still learning his role and what decisions to make--putting him in for the first half of Delaware State will help that development even if DSU is terrible. I'd love to see DRob get some time on the field (which is why I'd like to see him in the second half) and I think he has the potential to be a great QB in the future but Tate is by far the better QB this season and still has a lot to learn and improve. If he's medically cleared then Tate ought to be playing and gaining that experience.

They should definitely let him get healthy. There is no reason to play him against a cupcake team like Del St.. They are going to run wild against an inferior team. So let D get all the reps in practice this week, and let him play the whole game. It will be good for his progression. He needs a full week to run the first team and get a game to develop. We definitely need to hope for 2 weeks of rest for Tate before psu.

Let Denard come in, run for 4 TDs, and then throw 3 INT while trying to get his throwing game going. Meanwhile, Brandon Graham and Craig Roh will eat their QB. This is probably the only game where I'd be okay with DRob throwing a ton of INT.

this is the perfect game to rest Tate and give DRob a chance at starting and playing a full game. This way, if Tate were to get knocked out of a game in the future (knock on wood), DRob would have this full game on his resume so that it's not foreign to him. Plus, Delaware State is a very subpar team. This is an FCS team that is 1-3 and averaging 14 points per game.

It seems like the thing that Tate needs to work on most is his pocket passing. Against a team like D-state, we should be able to pass protect, and our receivers should be able to get open (PLEASE!!!). Hopefully, if he does play, he won't be running at all. Just sitting back and throwing. Learning to read the field and getting on the same page as his receivers. While Tate needs a confidence boost, I think it's really important to let his shoulder (and head) heal before another set of Big Ten D-linemen start hitting him again. If you notice, he hasn't quite had the same swagger since the ND game. He seems to slump his shoulders and has less of a bounce in his step. Yes, I sound like his mom.

Absolutely. Tate needs to rest up and get healthy, and Denard really needs the experience. Part of Denard's apparent inability to pass the ball any considerable distance has got to be his trust in his receivers. Even if he throws 2-3 INTs (which I don't think he will, even if he plays the entire game) on Saturday, he should complete some longer passes and start to gain confidence in his receivers and himself. If Tate is cleared to play, let him get some reps to stay sharp (he is still our guy, after all), but I hope to see DRob start and DRob finish this game

Only if he's cleared by the doctors, and then probably somewhat limited (get a score or two, then DRob comes in). If it were me, I'd sit him even if the docs provided the green light. No sense in risking a compounding injury in a game of ordinary proportions. It is a brain injury, after all, not a boo-boo, and they can be made far worse.

Agreed, we hear over and over again about how calm and collected Tate is...but I'm sure the benching doesn't help. Let him lead the team on a few scoring and drives and then give DRob the reps he needs to succeed as a admirable backup.

I am as much concerned about Tate's shoulder, there seems to be a consensus that he has not had as much zip on the ball the past 2 weeks. I would start Tate if healthy, but would also like to see his shoulder get some recuperation time.
