Does Rilo Kiley = Rrod era?
It has been 5 days since we hired a new coach. Now, as we start the process of moving forward, what pieces of the Rrod era stay and what go? Obviously, we would would like the pieces in which Denard is awesome to stay and anything having to do with the defense to go. However, one of the things that got a number of diehard mgoblog fans through the difficult times was the Rilo Kiley song "A Better Son/Daughter." This, of course, was mandatory viewing in Brian's 2009 season preview:

So now, mgoblog fans, does this song continue to be a positive or does it remind you too much of the Rrod era?

Jack Daniels is the RRod Era.

He isn't the coach anymore. Time for a new theme...

that guy put that together so we could all have a remorance
January 17th, 2011 at 11:41 AM ^
I remore that theme. Maybe the Hokester will bring it back.

The Michigan Replay theme is taken from the instrumental opening by J.J. Johnson and His Orchestra from the 1972 film Across 110th Street.
You can buy it from iTunes here.
It makes a fantastic ringtone for your phone.

I've never bothered to look that up all this time ... amazing. J.J. apparently got into fusion just like everyone else.

Here's a possible successor to the old Replay theme:

...is equal to the promise of "A Better Son/Daughter", but the promise of RichRod was never realized. In the end, the song's crescendo of music and lyrical bravado doesn't match the way the RichRod era ended: with a whimper on two successive weekends in November in Ann Arbor and on New Year's Day in Jacksonville.
So, no.

you will remember that after the crescendo and the whole "ship may be coming in, you're weak but not givin in - you'll fight it, you'll go out fighting all of 'em" the guitars and drums face and there is just keyboards with a sound effect layer. perfect for fading into the sunset.

I had no idea how much I missed that theme music. Makes me all happy and stuff.
Edit: Meant as a reply to the Michigan Replay youtube clip.

"Mainstreet" is actually about Ann Street in A².

Well done. I was literally getting ready to tee that up but I was stuck looking on iTunes for a Seger track before having the narf that, wait, Bob Seger isn't on iTunes.

At 0:53, was that Coach Hoke giving Lloyd a bear hug?
January 17th, 2011 at 11:41 AM ^
I mean, it was great and appropriate in 2009. Let's leave it at that.
January 17th, 2011 at 5:15 PM ^
Maybe it's just me, but I found that song aggressively cringe-worthy then, and still do now. Football and female indie rockers do not go hand in hand.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:48 AM ^
I always looked at "A Better Son/Daughter" as an MGoBlog shibboleth in that you would see it as a Facebook status or a tweet during a Michigan game (or during the week, or during something happening to Michigan) and you would know what they were talking about. It was shorthand.
Something new will come this fall.
January 17th, 2011 at 12:11 PM ^
is exactly how I feel about it.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:48 AM ^
they both suck/sucked then yes, Rilo Kiley = Rich Rod.

You Raise Me Up= RR era
January 17th, 2011 at 12:09 PM ^
I realized the other day that RR should now console himself listening to a different Josh Groban song - his cover of Don McLean's "Vincent."
"This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you."

Things that should stay:
34.3points per game
500 yards per game
Things that should go:
102nd ranked defense (points allowed per game)
108th ranked defense (yards allowed per game)
Special Teams that only attempts 14 FGs all year and misses 10 of them
Turn overs
More losses than wins
January 17th, 2011 at 12:03 PM ^
That Hold The Rope crap should go from the GO BLUE GO sign in the lockerroom
Cut the pipied-in music during the game.
Get rid of Victors walk and do it the old way. The player pull up in the maize and blue bus and then just walk to the lockerroom.
January 17th, 2011 at 12:15 PM ^
That was another thing that I wondered about. How well attended was the Victors Walk? Did it serve to support the team at all?
January 17th, 2011 at 12:06 PM ^
fuggin' OSU loss streak would be a nice new trend.

it just happened to be Gibson, so..............
January 17th, 2011 at 9:11 PM ^
RR era reminds me more of Skinny Puppy. Ugly, depressing, hopeless.... hindsight is 20/20 after all. Whatever hope there might have been in 2009, it is totally decomposed by now. We are left only with our addiction to the promise that died.
...though, Rich Rod does have the same initials as "Rick Roll" so, there's that
