Does Greg Mattison have a realistic chance of surviving the storm?

Subject line says it all.

I think Mattison's peformance has been solid.  He has been a key component of this coaching regime's success at recruiting.  And he has roots to the program.

Obviously, it depends on the HC.  But is there precedent for a new HC coming in but keeping DC intact in a high-profile program?

Are there significantly better and obvious choices available of which I am not aware?

Though I do not buy into the "Michigan Man" prerequisite, Mattison surely represents some cultural stability for the program, so I would think he's a strong candidate for retention.  I just want to know if that's an utter pipe dream...

I think the statistics often do not reflect how much harder it is to get statiscially-sound defensive numbers when a team's offense is so ineffective.  If one truly watches how the defense performs out there despite constantly being under intense pressure, injured, and fatigued, I really think Mattison deserves better.  Not because he's a "nice guy" but because he's a helluva coach.

And, once again, the incoming HC CLEARLY makes the call.  I just wanted to know if anyone thought Mattison had a snowball's chance because of his performance despite no offensive support, his history with the Harbaughs (God, I hope this is relevant!), and his past history with Michigan.

Plus I'm a sucker for nostalgia.

Has been a disappointment at least the last couple of years, but It looks to be improving. How much better would this D be if they had Peppers opposite Lewis all year? Their rush defense has been decent and having two excellent corners instead of one would have made the pass defense better. After watching MSU play last night, I think Michigan's D might be better than them. If Mattison stayed or left, I wouldn't have a problem either way. He's a good coordinator, but not great. There are better coordinators and much worse too.

Yes, the new HC will bring in his own staff, but he will have to consider the threat that some key talent could leave if the house is cleaned out.  And if you're going to keep someone on who has the respect of the players and recruiting cache, I suspect that Mattison is a guy you try to keep on board.
