Does Devin Funchess have any real fantasy value.

Submitted by mailmanmike209 on
I just dropped T. Austin for Devin Funchess this morning. Although its only for a bench spot, with Kelvin Benjamins injury, it appears that Funchess is getting his shot at the #1 spot. While reading reports, it says that he could get 100+ targets this season. Does anybody see him doing anything with this great opportunity and make this a good/very good pick up?

He's worth a bench spot in a 12 man league for sure. He's their #1 right now and Cam has no other legit targets except Greg Olsen. He should get a decent amount of red zone targets (if they ever make it there) with his size.

Sure, but at his current ADP I can't see it. He has all the potential in the world and an open track to a heavy workload... But he did at UM as well and never put it all together (even in light of the tire fire around him). I'd punt on him at his current price. But I'm buying Denard in round 13 or later.

Tweaked a hamstring in practice Wednesday.

But, since this could be the preseason thread:   Richard Ash sighting!  Went to the Giants-Jags game to see Denard & Chad (first time in memory no Michigan Giants on the roster) and Richard Ash played nose tackle for the Jags for the full 4th quarter.  Looked to be holding his own (not actually holding, or at least not called for it), and recorded a solo tackle.  Took his 5th year at WMU and looked svelte and physical.  UDFA.  I think a couple of their D-line are injured, but he got plenty of time, and definitely looked a part of the D-line gang on the sidelines.  Looks like someone they could put on their practice squad if they don't have room this season.

As for others who didn't stay, Ray Vinopal was put on the Cowboys' IR.  Those of us who can't possibly root for the Cowboys (they never seem to take M men), but follow teams with any former Wolverines, are relieved.

in my dynasty league. Took him and Jake Ryan with the last two picks of our rookie draft. Cam Newton is going to throw the ball, and it looks like Mr. Irrelevant is about to become Mr. Very Much Relevant, and I think he will be for several years to come. The only problem with Funchess is that he is no longer "off the radar," so you may not be able to get him later into your draft.

Now that he'll probably actually play like he cares, rather than the totally-mailing-it-in season he had last year at Michigan... He could be interesting.

But, really, I'd say probably not worth picking up if there's even a hint of a veteran TE hanging out on your waiver wire.

yes.  Could blow up and put up numbers.  But, you have to be ready to also have him completely crater.  Be interesting to see whether he can put it all together in the league.

My gut says no because of his tendency to take plays off and drop what should be easy completions, but he's Newton's only real receiving target this year, so he could put up some numbers. Still, I'd say no.

Anybody his size has a shot at fantasy value with target volume. and competing with Jerricho Cotchery and Tedd Ginn is a surefire way to get volume. Not to mention potential as a redzone option even though TDs tebd to be fluky in fantasy.

based on his performance last year and his seeming lack of motivation at times.

However, the Panthers love the guy. He has a world of talent and size, which is why Carolina drafted him. Because Cam Newton throws nothing but bullets and high balls, they needed a guy who Newton could accurately target given his throwing style.

Last week, in their road opener against Buffalo, Funchess made two great catches for 53 yards and the press loved his debut. Last night, he didn't play against Miami in a 31-30 comeback win in which the starting offense produced one near scoring drive in three possessions including the first two resulting in eight plays and no completions.

Wilth Benjamin out for the season, of course, Funchess becomes a bigger figure in the Panther offense. But while many expect he will have to step up for the team to have any chance this season at repeating another playoff run, I expect he will be limited and experience a marginal season at best. And I base that on what I saw from him a year ago at Michigan and my expectaton he would become a breakout star, which, of course, never happened. This doesn't mean I don't think he's tremendously gifted.

But I just don't think he's a great route runner or fast, which are major liabilities in the NFL. We'll see. I am prepared to cut him slack since he plays for the team i watch each week and root for. As I said, the organization, fans and press are generally excited about his future with the Panthers. But I don't think he is as dynamic or as athletic as Benjamin who enjoyed a terrific rookie year. I think the Panthers wind up making a move before the season starts to get another receiver either off the waiver wire or through a trade.

In any case, the Panther offense at this point is a major work in progress and the problem is principally with the qb in moving the team with any effectiveness and/or efficiency.
