So does the fact that we are now Big Ten Champs give Trey Burke the nod for Big Ten Fresh of the Year over Zeller?? I think it was really close, but I think the fact that he is a starting PG on the Banner team should hopefully put him over the top.
Does Burke get Fresh of the year??
Wouldn't be surprised if they shared it
These stats were with 2 games left to play
Zeller 16.1 ppg 22% of his teams total
Burke 15.5 ppg 25% of his teams total
Michigan is the best in the conference at Turnover Margin which directly relects on the point guard, and why we won so many tight games
Against the top teams in the B1G
11.7 pts 5.3 Reb 0.2 A 1.8 TO 0.5 BLK 0.5 STL
14.7 pts 3.1 Reb 4.4 A 3.3 TO 0.4 BLK 1.4 STL
Burke was better in every category except rebounds. And that margin is not that great when considering a C and PG
Burke had a bigger impact on the B1G race and his team.
He carried this team on his back more than a couple of times. When you combine that with them being co-Big Ten champs I think it out weighs Zeller. Zeller has been great, but ultimately Burke has been better and his team has the record to show it.
If you look at the stats vs the other top B1G teams Burke has better stats. Zeller was a no show in many of the big games they lost.
Trey Burke....clap clap clap....Trey Burke
Zeller has more national accolades but. Burke us more important to his team and we won a championship IU made more improvement. it is a toss up. BurkeSHOULD win but Big Bird prolly gets it.
The point position runs the entire offense while the center usually relies on teammates to get him the ball in favorable positions. If the stats are comparable, i would be very surprised if Burke doesn't get the nod. Bonus is that he has propelled his team to a better regular season.
Burk by a small margin. Give it up to the kid.
and I don't think that's wrong.
but I agree that a shared award is a distinct possibility.
imo Burke is more deserving. He's put the entire team on his back at several points this season, and Zeller has more talent around him. Burke also runs the entire offense and creates way more for himself than Zeller.
I think that if Michigan fans are saying Zeller honestly deserves it, then he probably does. I'd be more than happy if it was decided to award it to each of them.
He def has a good chance to get the honor! He meant that much to this team!
In a word, yes. He absolutely deserves it, he carried his team to a B1G Championship.
team performance should be irrelevant. Give it to the best basketball player. I don't have a strong opinion on who that is between Zeller and Burke, but would slightly lean Zeller.
I don't think team performance should be irrelevant. It cant be all about personal stats, because that doesn't really reflect impact on the team. How many times has Burke nailed a shot down the stretch in a close game, or led the team when everyone else was playing like crap?
awards should take team performance into account. I definitely don't buy it for "most outstanding" type awards. If Michigan went 8-10, Burke would be just as good a basketball player. Punishing or rewarding a guy because of his surrounding pieces doesn't make any sense.
Consider it a mandate. I am the government, and I am selling it. You don't have the option to not buy it.
So in determining most valuable player, you don't think we consider his value to the team? How does that make any sense at all?
I think the most valuable player is the one who increases his team's win total the most (in a "Wins Over Replacement" sense, not a "hit gamewinning shots" sense), regardless of what that win total ends up being. As a complete hypothetical, if having Zeller on the court tookIndiana from 4-12 to 11-7, and having Burke on the court took Michigan from 9-9 to 13-5, I would pick Zeller because he improved his team's performance by more.
As I said, I don't have a strong opinion in this particular instance as to whether Burke or Zeller is that guy in the Big 10 this year.
Burke minus Morris (best player on our team last year) took UM to league title. Zeller plus the whole cast returing at IU made them better.
He wouldn't be punished for the lack of play around him. He would be rewarded for making big time shots in big time moments and carrying his team. I've watched Zeller on quite a few occasions and I can recall a few times where he was mentally overwhelmed, and it affected his entire game. Trey, runs this offense and cannot afford to not be in the game mentally. As others have said, Trey is always the one that hits the shot that stops a drought, or puts us out of reach in the final minutes. Zeller's not that guy for IU. For that reason, you have to give Burke the nod. And I completely disagree with the statement that your record is irrelevant in evaluating the type of player you are. You hit big shots, at big times, in big games, then you are more valuable to you team and a better player than someone with similar stats but less responsibility, clutch-ness (?), and leadership.
are real things, assuming "responsibility" means something like usage rate, and I'm not necessarily opposed to taking them into account.
"Clutch" is not a real thing.
Clutch is not a real thing? It's hard to quantify, sure, but you can't really think all players are equally comfortable in pressure situations, do you?
and there's no evidence whatsoever that players have some sort of "clutch" ability to perform better in end-of-game, high-leverage situations than they would otherwise. Pick a famous "clutch" player, Jeter, David Ortiz, Kobe, etc., and they all perform the same in the clutch as they do at the start of the game.
It is the point guard's job to elevate his team. Burke has done that. He deserves Freshman of the Year. I won't mind if he shares it, but Burke definitely deserves to get the award either way.
but if not, then Trey has to get the nod. More minutes, more responsibilities, and more wins baby.
It will be a co-freshmen of the year type deal.
My vote would be for Trey. Although, I am very biased and don't have a vote.
I think he gets Freshman of the week for a 7th time this week and then wins Freshman of the Year. PG is so much more important than center. Take Zeller away from IU and they suffer but not as much as if you take Burke away from Michigan. How many times did Burke hit a jump shot when we had blown a lead, the other team had cut it to 1 or 2 and he stepped up and buried a deep two or 3. He did it again today and I totally expected it to go in.
Trey all day. Trey might be the POTY in the BIG. He is that good. Trey plays the most important position on a Bball team IMO, and played it better than any PG in the conference.
Is clearly Draymond Green. That guy runs his team in a similar manner as Burke (is much more significant as a leader to that team, he is their Novak/Douglas), averages a double-double, and essentially plays all positions for them. I don't see how anyone deserves it over him in the B1G
while it is a indivual award the team results are directly affected by how well the players perform thus the banner should be at least a small factor in the decision maybe the deciding factor
Don't know how the vote will go, but Trey SHOULD win. Best player on B1G Champion team, playing the most critical position, making the most critical shots at the end of the game. I'll take a co-winner award, but if he doesn't at least share it, it'll be a damn shame.... and he'll come back even harder next year.
Sure he wont win it, but he may get a few looks. Kid is going to be a good one
Against Wisconsin, MSU, and OSU-
Burke averaged 15 ppg. Zeller averaged 11.8
Not really significant, but when your shaping your facts around your argument, it works.
Besides the Davis kid at Kentucky and Rivers at Duke I think Burke would have to be the most outstanding Freshman, and certainly the most unexpected. The other two came in with huge expectations . . . Trey . . . not so much!
Who gets to decide?
Point guard of a big ten title team.....that's an easy question. Zeller is solid but burke is a stud.
I think Burke should get it. Team performance should absolutely come into it. Trey has been clutch.
Obviously I lean a little bit too much towards Michigan to analyze this fairly, but I never thought Zeller dominated or carried his team that well compared to Burke. I mean, without Burke, this team does not win the Big Ten. There's no doubt about it. Along with that, Burke was VERY good. Not only did he carry the team, but he should probably be 1st team Big Ten. I don't think there's a better Big Ten point guard at this time
is really a easy choice BURKE plays PG end of story.MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE MEDIA!!!
Will he? Probably not, Zeller won it in September.
A quick run at the googles couldn't answer this for me:
Who won more B1G freshman of the week awards?
Burke will be first team All Big Ten and IMO will be the frosh of the year. I know everyone thinks that he will get the shaft, but winning the B1G championship is going to be the deciding factor. And yes, that should merit the award because Michigan's success was directly related to Burke's success.
Both Zeller and Burke were awarded Freshmen of the Week 7 times, but only Burke also won the Player of the Week award.
Leading his team to a share of the Championship, as a 1, is absolutely huge for a Freshman and should at the very least give him a share of the FOY award
