Doc Brown: Peppers and Gary might be pretty good at this whole football thing

Michigan defensive coordinator Don Brown is feeling pretty good about one known defensive commodity, Jabrill Peppers, and already has a good feeling about a bit of an unknown at Michigan, Rashan Gary.

Re: Jabrill

“The minute you put him out there, is he the SAM, what is he? How do you play him? Is he a third safety? Is he a third corner? What is he? Those are the things you’re looking at trying to accomplish with a guy of his nature.”

Peppers won’t know just based on the personnel what his role will be.

“Until he hears the call,” Brown said.

It's hard to believe this might be our last year of enjoying someone with his kind of talent. He could legitimately play about 6 or 7 positions on defense, not to mention his offensive and special teams skills. It must be fun to sit in the coaches' offices and come up with various ways that he can be used from game to game.

Here's the thing, though: most coaches don't want that kind of flexibility. They like to specialize (to be fair, it's easier for most players to learn one and only one position). Harbaugh wants that kind of person, and more importantly he knows how to teach one guy to be good at lots of things. My theory is that there may have been people like Peppers in the past who just didn't get a shot for whatever reason. But now we know that it's possible and works out pretty damn well. So not only will we be searching for the next Peppers, high school and college kids will be trying to be the next Peppers. Another one will come along. I hope.

I mean what the hell is the difference in losing out on a couple million? He'll be worth over 20 million by the time he's 30. I'd settle for staying at my school! Especially UM. Kiss da rings bitches!

yeah, I expect Peppers to be that "dark horse" Heisman for all the tools to pick before the season, as opposed to the typical QB/RB sort of candidates ..

And he should be in NY by season's end - that would be sweet

I really hope he doesn't leave after this though I fully expect him to go (I can't imagine passing up that kind of coin) Feels like he came and went in a flash if this is it for him.

He said he was staying until he got his degree regardless of how long it took

Yeah this is just the beginning. Jabrill is a special talent but we're gonna have a lot of athletes like him coming through this program in the next few years. To be honest I don't think we've seen the staff figure out how to use him to his fullest abilities just yet. I'm excited about this move to SAM, I think this could make him the impact player he has the potential to be.

Part on Gary:

Could he possibly start?

“Never know,” Brown said. “Life is good, and he is very good.”

Brown didn’t rule out that possibility even with a number of veteran, experienced linemen.

You know the rules — best players play,” he said.

Yep. You get the feeling by midseason...when it's time to really turn the D loose....they are going to F*ck sh*t up. Just sayin'.

I think Wormley sees the biggest impact on draft status of anyone once Gary gets his chance to have an impact. It's gonna be big for everyone though. Peppers/Gary combo will be a force that will cut everyone loose. There aren't many teams that can account for that much speed and athleticism.

and realize he could become the first player ever to be drafted, thereby setting a precedence - actually only right in his case - considered to be both a "can't miss," and "unproven."

I realize Bob Hayes accepted a tryout with the Cowboys and earned a spot on the team without having played a down of football in college. However, he was not considered a "can't miss" or unproven.

You will all understand within five minutes, but I think Magnus was correct in stating he is one that we wil have to accept simply as being fortunate enough to watch, realizing he would be gone much too early.
