...LaLota, Lewan, Washington, Schofield, Toussaint and Gallon for redshirts with dark ink. Tentatively pencil in Gibbons (no more bad misses Olesnavage), Isaiah Bell, Mike Jones, Cameron Gordon, and Thomas Gordon for red-shirts.

I'd add Teric Jones' name to those written in very light pencil. Barring injury Tate, Denard, Roh, Campbell, Stokes, Hawthorne, and Vincent Smith will not redshirt. I have to imagine that Turner and Emilien will see the field at some point, given the combination of their hype and our lack of depth in the defensive backfield.

I'm moderately surprised that Gallon is heading towards a redshirt. I know we have better depth than last year at slot, but he got a lot of publicity after the Army All-American game last year. Has there been any chatter about him in practice? I know he played qb in high school - is he having trouble catching the ball? Also, I think Thomas Gordon and Isaiah Bell can be added to the "dark ink" list. Thomas Gordon was a relatively lower ranked recruit than the other safeties recruited, only played defense for one year in high school (IIRC), and was injured during fall camp. Bell is switching positions and I believe that most people felt he had to add considerable size to his frame before he would see the field.

You can play in the first 3 games of the season as long as they are non-conference games. If you play in conference, you will burn your redshirt. Many schools schedule cupcakes to see who will be able to contribute. Most of time coaches know who they are going to redshirt before hand, so they don't play them b/c they have to learn about the guys that will be out there. And being injured doesn't grant you a redshirt, it's all about timing. Amount of snaps is not a factor. Essentially, if you have a freshman that is playing 15+ snaps a game (offense, defense, special teams) then he is not going to redshirt. Most boarderline freshmen don't know if they are redshirting for the entire season and travel w/ the team in case they are thrown into the fire (Feagin).

The term "redshirt" is used to describe a student-athlete who does not participate in competition in a sport for an entire academic year. If you do not compete in a sport the entire academic year, you have not used a season of competition. For example, if you are a qualifier, and you attend a four-year college your freshman year, and you practice but do not compete against outside competition, you would still have the next four years to play four seasons of competition. Each student is allowed no more than four seasons of competition per sport. If you were not a qualifier, you may have fewer seasons of competition available to you. You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition. Also, a medical redshirt cannot participate in more than 20% of games, or the second half of the regular season. So, in UM's case, a guy cannot play in more than 2 games, or after the 6th game of the year. The injury/illness must be proven medically as a season ending injury/illness. There must also be some other rule to the 20%. As in total number of plays competed in vs. total plays for team. Hemingway competed in 4 games last year and still received a medical redshirt.

Formerlyanonymous is correct. You can't play a snap and keep your redshirt unless 1)it was at the beginning of the season and 2) you have actual medical proof that you suffered an injury that kept you out of comission the rest of the year. The NCAA hears medical-redshirt cases following the season.

I wish we would've redshirted Brandon Minor when he was behind Mike Hart. It seems like he'll be graduating without getting a full season in. Hopefully we can get away with reshirting Vlad, Vincent Smith, and maybe Justin Turner since he joined so late.

For my money, I don't want Justin Turner redshirting. I think he can be a valuable component to this team once he picks up the reads. He was late coming in but considering our CB play so far, I hope he progresses enough during the year that he is seeing the field.

I'm with you on JT. I think he will be a valuable player to have in the 2nd half of the season. If it was a perfect world, I'd have Michigan up by at least 3 touchdowns after half, with all players healthy, and then send in JT and others to give them as much playing time as possible in the 2nd half. I'd almost exclusively play the 2's or young guys in the 2nd half with a mix of 1st stringers in there as well to keep the offense honest. We'll see what happens, but I have been as excited for JT prior to the season as I was for Forcier, D Robinson, and Roh.

Rodriguez said that in a normal year, Teric Jones and Justin Turner would ideally redshirt. I think that gives us a pretty good indication of where Turner is at this point - he might just not be ready to contribute.

So, guys that have played 1. Tate Forcier 2. Denard Robinson 3. Craig Roh 4. Brandon Hawthorne 5. Will Campbell 6. Je'Ron Stokes 7. Vincent Smith 8. Vlad Emilien 9. Teric Jones 10. Justin Turner (Not yet, but likely)

I'm keeping track of players. Once we get past game three (which is the limit for medical redshirts), we'll know much more for certain.
